"Longmont and Niwot were a great place to grow up in the 50's and 60's but I could not recommend them now."

They're still good but we're starting to have a small "Hispanic" gang problem here in Longmont. Strangely the local officials seem totally surprised.

Every town was better in the 50's and 60's. Are you in Lyons?

I like Buffalo Wy. Mountains, streams and lakes. Where men are men and so are some of the women.

Grand Junction near the Utah border off of I-70.

Grand Junction appeals to native, or nearly native, front range Coloradoans. Fort Collins to Colorado Springs is just one long stretch of suburbia with the ensuing clutter and traffic problems. Grand Junction on the western slope is still manageable size wise, at the confluence of the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers water isn't a issue. Weather is moderate, more so than the front range (east side) of mountains. Grand Junction is the largest city between SLC and Denver and is more or less about 4 to 5 hours driving time to both cities. Great vineyards in the area producing award winning wine with Two Rivers winery my favorite.

I used to vacation in Durango and have friends who live in the area.

Very beautiful but somewhat expensive area.

I also find City-Data to be useful once you have a city in mind.

I would suggest picking out a place and then sign up on rentclicks.com for the town you choose. They will start emailing you available rentals along with info on the surrounding area and schools, etc. I would definitely rent for a few months at least before I bought. Good luck!

I've lived here all my life. Stay west of the divide. Avoid entire state if possible.

But please visit often and spend lotsa money while you're here!

(Ain't seen ya in awhile. Whatcha been up to?)

I live in Pueblo and could not agree more... too many illegals, City council are all democrats and complete idiots, I would like to move out to Montrose, very conservative, and its close to many of the best fly fishing waters in the country.

I'm not originally from here. This is my wife's home town. I've never seen the like. I let what I had always thought "Colorado" might be -- the image I had ingrained in me -- allow me to say okay to coming here. There is zero work, houses are old, small and expensive, they speak a different language (Spanish), those young people who actually graduate leave as soon as they do (my children hate it here and always ask if we can leave), taxes are high and the weather is dreadful.

My understanding as to why the council continues to disallow companies to move to this unfortunate place is because they want to keep the town small and "family friendly." But this is the least "family friendly" place I've ever been. Lately, I'm considering Southern MS, as it is my belief there is more hope and opportunity and a better economy there (I'm from the South anyway and would love to return). The Hurricanes don't scare me as much as this place.

I go to sleep each night and awake each day with the prayer and the hope that God will allow me to escape this retched place before I die.

Rifle yes way.

I vote Leadville too! Four bay, Twin lakes area. God's country up there. Second only to Colorado's Sawatch Valley.

BTW, your age and physical condition could make a difference in where you live.
I lived in Leadville for a short time and worked in the hospital there. We frequently saw tourists with respiratory problems in our ER due to the 10,430 foot elevation. We also had a lot of underweight babies born up there.
Years later, I also met a very disappointed gentleman from Texas who had intended to retire to Estes Park (7,700 feet). Unfortunately, he discovered that he could only stay there if he went on oxygen full time.
Just a thought.

The Colorado scenery is so breathtaking, it's worth doing without some things just to be able to look out and see what G-d has created.

So it seems the consensus is to stay away from the southeastern part of the state, and look into places in the northwest and west-central part of the state.

Just reading a few things, it seems Gunnison and Montrose are very nice. Grand Junction looked nice, that little area in there between Aspen and Steamboat Springs and Fort Collins as well.

Does anyone have any further comments or personal experiences, good or bad, on those towns? I'm doing my own research but it is so much more fun to hear from a variety of people who have actually been there, done that :)

Thanks!!!

Where do you live now? If you are not used to living with snow, I think you are better off in the Front Range area rather than in the mountains themselves, at least at first. Maybe try living a year in Fort Collins or Colorado Springs with frequent trips up into the mountains in all weather to see what you think?

Fort Collins is a fun little city, for me. It has somewhat of a college town atmosphere but there are plenty of adult residents and people with families. I have really enjoyed living here. If you do move here, get a house a little ways out of town or at least well away from the college unless you like college student neighborhoods.

now now, dont be selfish.

I think y'all have misunderstood me.

I'm saying to avoid CO because of the Californication that has taken place here over the last 10 - 20 years, especially along the front range. Way, WAY too much growth, no end in sight and water is already a big problem.

Just my opinion as a lifetime native.

PS Hiya uglybiker. I've been up to no good. Smoked the clutch in the Challenger at the drag strip Sunday, so I'll be laying on concrete for a while.

How have you been? Hope all is well. Get the Roadrunner goin' yet?
