Rep. John Conyers Spends Thousands on Education for His Own Kids
Sierra Times ^ | 5/9/2006 | Jim Kouri, CPP

While Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) continues his strong opposition to school vouchers that would allow poorer Americans access to private schools for their children, Conyers enrolls his own children in one of the nation's priciest private schools.

Rep. Conyers spends upwards of $17,000.00 per year for his child to attend The Cranbrook School. It's estimated that once the child reaches the ninth grade, the tuition will rise to over $21,000.00 per year.

While school-voucher supporters have noted what they see as his blatant hypocrisy, the mainstream news media ignores the fact that Rep. Conyer's children attend an elite academy while his constituents are forced into "the educational disgrace of the Detroit Public School System."

Conyers is a ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee and is the subject of an ethics investigation over allegations he used his staff "inappropriately." Conyers, according to former House staffers, used them for babysitting and menial jobs outside the perview of their job descriptions.

There are also allegations that Conyers and his staff took dozens of Thanksgiving turkeys which were meant for charity and used them for their own private holiday meals.

Conyers' office did not comment on these allegations.

Typical DemocRAT. Klinton used the Arkansas State Police to procure women while the mild-mannered communist Conyers uses government-paid flunkies to baby sit.

Yes, but he can afford it because he saves so much in daycare by using his staff as babysitters.

From Conyers' own House website

Conyers Urges Detroiters to Stand Up for Public Schools and Reject Voucher Schemes

(Washington, DC) -- Congressman John Conyers, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee and Dean of the Congressional Black Caucus, commended Partners for Public Education for its organization of its "Every Child Counts -- Stand Up for Public Schools" event in Detroit on Tuesday, October 26th.. "It is vital for parents, educators, and community leaders to join together to strengthen Detroit's public schools. This forum will allow supporters of public education to discuss real school reform -- such as reduction in class size, teacher training, and building new schools -- and learn about schemes like vouchers which will only harm our public schools," Conyers said.

Hypocrite.

I wasn't aware that anyone had OK'd John Conyers to reproduce. These children should probably be taken into foster care while this situation can be reviewed.

I still don't see the hypocracy. He thinks rich people should be able to send their kids to good, private schools and poor people should have to stay in the public ones. It's a coldhearted position, but a consistent one.

Conyers is a registered communist?? Can you provide more info?

Also, vouchers are the way to go. Public education is a joke. Jeb Bush tried to get it done in Florida, but was shot down.

The teachers union likes the staus quo. They can sit on their fat dumb ass*s and do absolutely nothing and still get a paycheck. The good teachers usually leave after a few years in frustration.

NOT using vouchers hurts the poor and minorities the most.

The public education system has really become an unbalanced class issue. The wealthy use private education, the uppermiddle class and some middle class live in good school districts where housing, services and taxes are expensive in order to take advantage of the good public school systems. Even the so-called "good" public schools are stretched to the limit now, showing the effects of a decaying, bs system that is ineffective.

The other categories are religious private schools (Catholic, Christian, Jewish, etc.) and home schooling. All are superior to public education. A lot of people scrimp and save to send their children to a good religious school with high standards and IMHO the result is well worth the effort.

No surprise here. Conyers displays the same traits as all elitists. Public school is good enough for the "common people" but not for them because they are special.

I would like to see a bill that would require elected officials to use the public systems they vote on, if it is good enough for the reg folk it should be good enough for them.

Not only is he against vouchers but he probably isn't fond of Christian private schools or home schoolers. Many socialists publicly state that parents should not be allowed to homeschool. I've also noticed some people try to dismiss many Christian schools on the grounds that they do not teach evolution.

Of course everyone knows public schools are fine just not for his children.

Friday, Dec. 23, 2005 12:31 a.m. EST Rep. Conyers' Wife in Bar Fight The wife of Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) has been accused of punching a woman in the eye during a bar fight.

A spokesman for Monica Conyers, a city councilwoman-elect, confirmed Friday that she was involved in an altercation. But he said Conyers merely defended herself after being attacked by another woman.
