Governor Fletcher indicted

Governor Ernie Fletcher has been indicted by the Merit Hiring Grand Jury on charges of conspicacy to commit politcal discrimination. This is culmination of months of investigation by the Attorney General, Greg Stumbo and a blanket pardon from Governor Fletcher. It should be noted that the pardon does not include the governor.
Will we continue to bring you more information as it becomes available.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Gov. Ernie Fletcher was indicted on misdemeanor charges Thursday by a special grand jury investigating state hiring practices.
Fletcher was charged with criminal conspiracy, official misconduct, and violating the prohibition against political discrimination.
The grand jury also handed down 14 sealed indictments.

C'mon, look at how weak the GOP is even as a majority. I would not be surprised if Bush were impeached even with the democrats as a minority. With 'republicans' like Specter, who needs democrats? And the band played on.
I really don't understand this. I never heard of political discrimination so hopefully later their will be more news on this. I can't believe another Republican is in trouble. I actually hope that due to my ignorance that I just don't know what the heck this is and maybe this is not as bad as it seems to be.
Can someone explain this in layman's terms??

It's a two-pronged self-inflicted pitchfork to the foot. When it comes to political combat, the Dems go for it like streetfighters. They fight to win. They fight like rabid dogs. They do not hold back, they do not pull their punches, and the only "rule" they observe is "will this help me win, or not?"
Our boys, on the other hand, steeped in the culture of the countryclub, step into the ring with Robert's Rules of Order under one arm, and The Marquis of Queensbury Rules under the other. And they leave on a gurney, mumbling something about "get the number of that truck!"
The other prong of the pitchfork is even bloodier. They treat their base like a classical abused wife, while going "Hey, babe!" to every Democrat constituency they encounter. The basic reality eludes them: The Democrat factions will gladly accept the handouts proffered -- and then vote Democrat.
The whole scene is mind-boggling. Alienating their own voters, while paying off the other party's hardcore constituents. Beyond madness.

For some reason Kentuckians are rock ribbed Republicans when voting for President, Senator, and Congress, but they like Democrat governors. And Republicans have run some pretty lame candidates in the past. Fletcher was the best one in years. I refuse to believe he had anything to do with any organized effort to fire state employees just because they were Democrats. He might have had some idiot underlings that did it in a hamhanded way and left a paper trail. The problem is that 99% of state employees are Democrats, so if you fire any serious number of them you are going to open yourself up to charges of political discrimination. The Democrat-controlled legislature wrote that goofy political discrimination law just so they could do this is a Republican ever won the governorship again.
Oh yeah, and Grady Stumbo is a scumbag. One of the stunts he pulled was having TV stations miraculously show up with cameras while he staged "raids" on the offices of Fletcher's aides. In one of them people were shown carrying out dozens of "boxes of documents." All the boxes were empty and were planted by Stumbo. The gullible Kentucky media bought it hook, line, and sinker.

It's simple -- Democrats don't like it when Republicans try to blur the distinction between the two parties.
Republicans are supposed to be the ones who employ the Patronage System within the Party, i.e., ensure that only good 'ol boys get to make it to/through the primaries.
Democrats, on the other hand, are not supposed to do that. Their role is to employ the Patronage System after they get into office, using it to populate the various offices with like-minded effendi.

Maybe George Clooney's dad will run for Kentucky governor next time.

The grand jury also handed down 14 sealed indictments.
A Fletcher spokesman says the governor's office would release a statement later.
So far, 13 current and former administration officials and associates have been indicted on various misdemeanor charges stemming from the probe.
Fletcher was scheduled to appear at King's Daughters Heart and Vascular Center in Ashland for an event at 5 p.m. EDT today.
We know a grand jury will indict anything with very little proof, but the nature of the charge itself seems a peculiar law.
What if the Dems won a national election, and the red states refused to obey?
And Hillary still walks free.
I guess when you fail to get elected you go to your former court appointed judges to get approval for a "formal arrest"....
Time to tell the judge that he/she is not above the law and arrest the judge for abuse of power, throw the person in jail with Bubba or Mary and go on about business.

Your daddy was right. In eastern KY during the depression era the politicians and coal company officials were almost the only people there who managed to get by alright. For instance, if a man or woman could win a race for the local school board many of his or her family members could get jobs doing something at or around the school. The same thing applied to some degree to other political offices and government facilities, but the school positions were particularly useful for that purpose. With so many of the mines closed and no other industry in the region it was a matter of survival of the cleverest and most ruthless.
My wife's family was involved in politics in eastern KY during that time. One of her uncles served a short sentence for killing a rival politician on election day at the polling place. He happened to be a member of the "right" party faction at the time, so he got off with practically a slap on the wrist. The family had managed to get a sister elected to the school board at the last election, and the other candidate was of course a threat to their meal ticket. The killing was in self defense according to the family, but I think there was more to it than that since the other man wasn't armed.
I haven't visited down there since the last family funeral in the 1980s, but I understand that the old ways are fading away fast in those mountains now and prosperity has arrived at last. That's kinda sad in a way I guess, that was a unique part of America at one time and according to my wife not a bad place to grow up in spite of all it's many problems. But as "they" say, you can't stop progress. At least you can't if you count Walmart Super Centers, quarter-mile long strip malls, and fast food joints on every corner as progress.

Gregory D. Stumbo is Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Kentucky (2003 – present). He previously served in the Kentucky House of Representatives for twelve terms. Stumbo was Kentucky's longest-serving House Majority Floor Leade(1980 – 2003) and as Majority Leader in the House (1985 – 2003). Stumbo is a member of the Democratic party.
