A group of San Diego men denied free Mother's Day weekend giveaways at major league baseball games are suing some teams -- including the Oakland A's -- over their lost tote bags and reversible bucket hats.
Alfred Rava, a San Diego attorney, filed suit in Alameda County Superior Court May 8 for sex discrimination against the Oakland A's after he did not receive a free plaid reversible bucket hat during a promotion at the A's game May 8, 2004.
The suit, filed on behalf of all men who were denied the reversible hats, claims discrimination occurred because the hats were given to only to women. Rava also is suing the Macy's department stores, which sponsored the giveaway.
An A's spokesman said the team does not comment on pending litigation.
A similar suit was filed earlier this month in Orange County Superior Court. That lawsuit, filed by Michael Cohn, alleges males and fans under 18 were treated unequally when they were denied a red nylon tote bag during a Mother's Day promotion at a Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball game last year. The bag was being given away to women over 18.
Rava is Cohn's attorney in the lawsuit against the Angels, while Rava is represented by another San Diego-based attorney, Greg Cartwright, in the suit against the A's.
Sex and age discrimination lawsuits are not new to Rava. Just last month, the San Diego Union Tribune reported Rava and another man, Steven Surrey, have filed more than 30 such lawsuits in San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties against restaurants, nightclubs and other businesses that offer Ladies' Nights and similar discounts to a select group of people.
In many of those lawsuits -- including the one against the A's -- Rava cites California's Unruh Civil Rights Act as the primary anti-discrimination law violated. Penalties for violating the law include the awarding of damages of $4,000 per violation.
Some of the lawsuits have been settled out of court, while some have been thrown out, according to the paper.
While the lawsuits may seem frivolous to some, it already may have produced some changes. This year, the first 25,000 fans, regardless of sex, will receive a free Mother's Day ladies tote bag at this Sunday's Angels game.
Originally, the giveaway was suppose to only go to women, but the Angels changed the promotion after the season began, said Angels spokesman Tim Mead. Mead refused to say whether Rava's complaints against the team initiated the change.
I suppose the immature adults will be the next to sue when there's a giveaway for children under 12......
August: An asshole, er, voracious lawyer named Alfred Rava and three of his vor-asshole lawyer friends sued local bars for sexual discrimination when they were denied free drinks and/or cover charge discounts during a series of ladies night promotions, thus ending centuries of oppressive gender discrimination against men.
"Several [San Diego] bars and clubs have been forced to drop their so-called ladies night promotions in response to a series of lawsuits that claim the practice discriminates against men." Union-Tribune, Aug. 3, 2003 < p>The Unruh Act prevents business establishments in California from discriminating against, among other things, age, race and gender. The claimants include two plaintiffs from San Diego (Steven Surrey and Alfred Rava), and their two lawyers (Erik Jenkins and Randal Glaser). Their position is that ladies night discriminates against males in the same manner that blacks were discriminated in the south.
Yeah, right.
My guess is they are four greedy lawyer-types trying to make a name and a buck for themselves. Because, as it turns out, the plaintiffs are lawyer-types alsoone is a paralegal; the other attended Cal Western School of Law with the two attorneys of record. My guess is theyre all buds. My guess is the four were hanging out over beers one night and concocted this grandiose ladies-night lawsuit scheme.
Next they will be filing lawsuits because they were denied access to women's restrooms.
If the Angels had any brass, they would have cancelled all give aways.

Oh, and the Angels ought to forfeit 50 games as well. Lessee (sound of calculator clicking in background) - yeah, that'd put the M's just about 3 games out by season's end...
The suers are either pansies or homos. Real men wouldn't be this stupid. They'd wait for fathers day.
Los Angeles. Men demanding Mother's Day tote bags. Knowing what I know about California, it makes sense to me. SWISH!
Well......yeah. They're really stupid.
They've got to be flaming queers. No real man would lower himself to this level.
Yeah, but there's nothing funny about this. It's Orwellian, totalitarian.
This is what some people do for a living. Here in Tampa we have had an lawyer in cahoots with some disabled people. They run around with measuring tape and such making trouble for mom and pop businesses that don't have state of the art handicapped facilities.
They always have several cases going at once, and usually settle for a nice bit of blood money from small businessmen without deep pockets.
Then when the legislature tries to stop the lawsuit abuse, the demos come out and scream that the pubs are hurting the "little people" by destroying their legal protections. It's a racket.
