U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) released the following statement:
I want to assure the American people that the cosponsors of the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act, and the senators who worked to find a compromise last week that would have won the support of a substantial Senate majority remain totally committed to returning to this issue when the Senate returns from recess.
The public expects Congress to address comprehensively this national problem recognizing both the vulnerability of our inadequately protected borders and the need to allow an earned path to citizenship for the millions of undocumented immigrants who work here that substitutes fines, civic responsibilities such as paying back taxes and learning English, and a place at the back of the line for the de facto amnesty that exits under our current system.
This is a fair, practical and humane solution to the problem of illegal immigration that Im confident has the support of a majority of Americans and will have the support of well over sixty senators. In the Senate, no less than in the country at large, the majority will eventually prevail, and we are absolutely determined that it be sooner rather than later.
He is only considered a front runner by the liberal media, because McCain is their darling.
Agreed.
There a lot of Southerners who think McCain is as much a war hero as John Kerry.
Where is your sarcasm quotation? I, for one, am not buying this "new" McCain -- once a RINO, always a RINO...
He Has!!!
And it's,
......................."SHANESTY!!!"
Why do you think us Conservatives are peeved at him? We believe if we let him know loudly enough, how wrong he is on this issue, he may wake up, and 2006 will not be the disaster that he and McCain are creating.
Secure the border, then lets talk!
One word: ego.
I'll bet you he doesn't carry his own State (my State) Arizona -- he is not popular down here and his attitude on the border is only making him more unpopular... the only people who like McCain are the Dems and the people who don't know him.
The rule of holes should apply here. When you are in one stop digging.
If you really support McCain, adding extra reasons for people not to vote for him is counterproductive, unless you are as delusional as he is.
He said he supported the Senate bill that failed to pass just before the Easter break. That was the first I know of him supporting something that was anything close to that level of amnesty.
His past guest worker proposal was vague. It did not require illegal aliens to leave the country before applying. He did say that the workers would be required to return home after a number of years, though the part about the path to citizenship was so vague that it could have meant automatic citizenship for everyone, or meant citizenship only for a select few who proved their value.
Even his rather vague proposal gave preferential treatment to those who came here illegally and was a form of amnesty, but I don't know of him explicitly proposing anything as bad as the Senate bill on his own.
However, his claim of rejecting amnesty appear to be based on requiring the illegal immigrants to pay a fine, and grant them legal residency now, but have them wait in line for citizenship until current applicants had been processed.
He says he is against amnesty because it would be unfair to those trying to immigrate legally and encourage illegal immigration. However, every one of his own guest worker proposals have given preferential treatment to those here illegally.
However, until he backed the senate bill, it wasn't nearly as blatant.
None of those things add up to amnesty, much less the super-amnesty that McCain was pushing in April.
He said he supported that bill and would sign it if it were passed by the house and senate.
