Today President Bush Met with Former Secretaries of State and Former Secretaries of Defense at the White House to talk about the situation in Iraq and get their input, later in the day the President celebrated Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and Presents President's Volunteer Service Awards in the East Room of the White House. The President also asked the media for airtime on Monday night at 8:00 PM EST to speak about border security and the possibilty of sending the National Guard to patrol the border

QUOTE OF THE DAY: THE PRESIDENT: "America has thrived as a nation because we've always welcomed newcomers, who, in turn, embrace our values and our way of life. Every immigrant who lives by these values makes our country better and makes our future brighter as "one nation under God."
We're grateful to the many Asian Pacific Americans who serve our nation in many ways. I just honored those who serve our nation by wearing the uniform, but there are all kinds of ways to serve America. The President's Volunteer Service Award is the highest honor given in recognition of those who have contributed their time and their talents to those in need."

MGCCC STUDENTS GRATEFUL FOR BUSH'S 'INSPIRATIONAL' WORDS
Friday, May 12, 2006
By Natalie Chandler
BILOXI -- For Heather Wood, earning a diploma was stressful enough without Hurricane Katrina.
Wood juggled a full-time job and full-time classes until 7 feet of water filled her Ocean Springs home, and then took online classes to finish her hard-earned degree.
But listening to President George W. Bush on graduation day, Wood said she earned more than a diploma.
Wood said she received hope.
"I had to swallow my tears," Wood said. "It gave me something to walk up there for, besides my degree."
Bush's words of encouragement to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College resonated with more than 1,400 graduates, the most ever to attend a MGCCC commencement ceremony.
Many graduates at the ceremony struggled through Katrina's devastation to finish their degrees.
"It's not a part-time activity," said Robert Hardage, who spent weekends cleaning up his damaged home. "Going to class proves how strong we are."
"(Bush's) speech was great," said Lisa Vice, a graduate from Helena. "Especially after what everybody's been through. Life doesn't stop (after Katrina.)"
Bush peppered his 20-minute speech with praise for several graduates in the crowd who triumphed over their tough circumstances.
He marveled at Kendrick Kennedy, a Biloxi resident who graduated with special honors despite losing his sight.
"He said, 'I'll be doggoned if I let Katrina stop me,'" Bush recalled Kennedy saying.
The personal anecdotes resonated with graduates and their families.
"He gave examples of people who overcame adversity," said Evelyn Caldwell, who watched her daughter, Marisa, graduate. "I'm a sucker for that. It's inspiring."
"I like the way he addressed the graduates, because they're a part of the rebuilding," said Roberta Turmon, who traveled from Wiggins to watch her daughter, Amber, graduate.
Besides his speech, the audience applauded Bush for his mere presence at the commencement program.
"This is not exactly on the way to anywhere," said Chasity Williamson, a graduate from Biloxi. "He thinks it's worth something, so it's a special thing he did for us."
"It's his first time to speak to a junior college," Vice pointed out. "That says a lot. He must think a lot about the Coast and supporting Mississippi."
Williamson said she was also impressed with Bush's praise for the Coast's spirit of rebuilding.
"He didn't dwell on what happened," Williamson said. "He talked about the future."
Bush urged graduates to use their education and skills to help the area continue to recover from the storm.
Hardage, a graduate from Pascagoula, said the message was what he expected.
"I knew what he would say, but I still can't believe we are the future that will make Mississippi better," Hardage said. "It's an inspiration."
Bush's speech forced some difficult decisions for graduates, who were each allotted five tickets for guests.
"That was bad," Wood said. "I wanted to invite my whole family, but I couldn't. I was very upset."
Edna Rosa DeLora, who traveled from Panama to watch her granddaughter graduate, said she attempted to give Bush flowers and jewelry but was turned down by an apologetic member of his Secret Service detail.
"They said they weren't allowed to take it," DeLora said. "It's all right. (The jewelry) may have gotten lost."
Bush left immediately after his speech, before the hundreds of graduates walked across the stage to receive their diplomas.
But the excitement of the presidential visit lingered, Wood said.
"I'm still overwhelmed," she said. "And now I have the possibility of a full-time job to look forward to."

So I went looking around, and finally noticed your opening words "Today President Bush Met with Former Secretaries of State and Former Secretaries of Defense ..."
I should read more carefully next time ;).
toaster hog.....
everyone is over at the "Let's talk civil about illegal immigration" thread that Ohio started. She's DOING IT!
Left immediately after the speech (so as not to upstage the graduates, and so as not to endanger them).
Our President doesn't need to hog the limelight.
Thank you, Kayak, for the Psalm and the prayer list.
I FReeped you some updates.
Thanks for the Dose. Gotta go and play with my honey bunny. I promised him a Scrabble game for putting a couple of window screens up (the last 2).
It's heading into the 90's here. Oh, my... the electric bill will be outta sight when we give in and turn on the air conditioner.
Could you add "Michael" in Afghanistan to your prayer list....he's a friend of ours nephew....he lost 10 of his buddies last week in that helicopter crash.
Thank you.
HAPPY DAY......great pics Mike....thanks.
PLease vote on the poll on this webpage if you are so inclined....

Good to see you, Mike, and
thanks for the Dose!
They might have gotten five tickets due to it being a community college and the venue having more seating space than one can usually get for a larger graduating class.
Both my high school and college grad ceremonies allowed us only two or three tickets per student.
Very few people would have air conditioning in fact I do not know of any that do, businesses do but not private homes. I expect really posh places may do nowadays.
The most that ordinary people have is a fan
How hot does it get in the summer where you are snugs?
We may have the ocassional day in the 90s but normally at the height of summer it is between 75 - 85.
Howdy all, Soory for being gone so long, I had to drive the grandsons back home
Grandkids take priority anyday - no problem.
Did you have a great time with them? What did you do?

Sounds great, never owned a BBQ myself but always enjoy going to one.
Hi Mike. Thanks for the Dose. It truly is Sanity Island, especially now in the build-up to the President's speech on Monday.
