No doubt the problem is caused by global warming.

Until now, scientists had only been able to trace the magnetic field’s behaviour back to 1837, when Carl Friedrich Gauss invented the first device for measuring the field directly.

Ampere, Volta, Gauss ... how utterly strange that so many of these early electricity pioneers had last names associated with the very phenomena they were studying!

Cookie, we are all doomed!

We must register as Democrats at once, or these obscene forces unleashed by Republican Militarist-Imperialist-Industrialist-Racist-homophobic elderly white men will endanger every last woman, child, homosexual, and minority group member on the planet.

Typical dead white male ego-centrist racist warmongers.

They "could" have been selecting the right mix lab assistants and fellow experiments to ensure a diverse environment. But NO, these chose people of talent and enery and knowledge

In the Left's dreams.

From the article:

Every 300,000 years on average, the north and south poles of the Earth's magnetic field swap places. The field must weaken and go to zero before it can reverse itself. The last such reversal occurred roughly 780,000 years ago, so we are long overdue for another magnetic flip. Once it begins, the process of reversing takes less than 5000 years, experts believe.

I didn't think this was "new" news.

The water in the toilet bowls will slowly start to reverse direction as they drain. Already, the water in my toilet bowl is not swirling as fast clockwise as it used to.

I buy only reverse turning motors. The reversal cancels out some small effect of normal motors.

The plants in my house sense the neutral polarity atmosphers and grow like hell. The air is ion free and all my pets are positively glowing with good circulation and improved cognitive ability.

Uncertain.

The van Allen belts do shield the earth from the sun's magnetically guided particles, so general radiation could increase.

That assumes that the van Allen belts are greatly reduced if the magnetic fields is switching. Other magnetic switches in the past seem to be very fast according to lava flow data freezing magnetic signatures in place, and the field comes back "up" (but reversed) in a very, very short amount of time.

Given the tremendous impact of El Nino from only small changes in tropical sun radiation, changing large areas of Arctic solar radiation and solar heat gain would affect climate too.

Maybe.

Yeah. But I'll bet those reverse running motors will re-reverse running if ya plug the AC cords in upside down.

You "do" know that the Aussie's AC current uses a cosine curve, don't you? So your trick down there would merely power up the utility with free electricity from your kitchen.

The UFO's better recalibrate their compasses.

They might miss Earth!

Im no scientist, but I thought that the ability to deflect radiation will decrease as the polarity weakens before it reverses over time. (on my 3rd cup of java and I think i know something, back to lurking..)

in re 'Van Allen' belts

This is precisely why I am backing Hillary and Nancy Pelosi. If one of them, or Al Gore, or John Kerry were running this country, they would raise taxes on wealthy heteronormative, gender binary, patriarchal white males to equip every woman, child, minority group member, and participant in an alternative life-style, with their very own Van Allen Belt.

In fact, I believe that caches of this vital gear should be placed at strategic points in the deserts along the Mexican border, so that no illegal alien need go unprotected.

"heteronormative, gender binary, patriarchal" ... notice my new, improved vocabulary ... it's wonderful when one's children share their New England education with one ... despite their admission that their father may well be all of those nasty things.

By sifting through ships' logs recorded by Cook and other mariners dating back to 1590, researchers have greatly extended the period over which the behaviour of the magnetic field can be studied. The data show that the current decline in Earth's magnetism was virtually negligible before 1860, but has accelerated since then... The field's strength is now declining at a rate that suggests it could virtually disappear in about 2000 years... But the weakening trend could also be explained by a growing magnetic anomaly in the southern Atlantic Ocean, and may not be the sign of a large scale polarity reversal...
To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.

“...the ability to deflect radiation will decrease as the polarity weakens before it reverses over time.”

That just means you can eat all the salad and broccoli until it is coming out of your ears and you are still going to die of cancer, so you might as well eat the foie gras, pizza and burgers.
