Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto.

The epic, due for release later this year, captures the decline of the Maya kingdom and the slaughter of thousands of inhabitants as human sacrifices in a bid to save the nation from collapsing.

Gibson reveals he used present day American politics as an inspiration, claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to maintain power.

He tells British film magazine Hotdog, "The fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys".

People give him a free pass because he is a strong catholic.

He's hollywood. Why should we care what he thinks one way or another?

I have to admit, I no longer understand Americans. I would have thought they would grasp the idea that when you are attacked by a bunch of nuts with alien ideas, you fight back. But Americans are no longer a nation of people who are capable of thinking that way. Osama was entirely correct, when the U.S. is hit, it lacks the will to fight back. Gibson is just one more accumulated example of this. He would rather blame Bush for his problems than blame the situation in the World.

If you are a person who believes we should fight back against Muslim terrorism, accept the fact that a big chunk (50%?) of the American public won't agree with you.

I think that Gibson is getting his talking points from Hillary...

Hillary was giving a speech a few weeks ago....where she was accusing Bush of "fear-mongering" re: the war on terror, and Iraq...blah, blah.

As far as I am concerned, the dems have been fear-mongering for years, when they tell seniors that the Repulicans are going to take away their Medicare...and other scare tactics.

I understand what he is saying. He is basicaly quoting Ben Franklin.

"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both. "

This does not exactly qualify him as a looney. The movie "The Patriot" shows his love for his country and its long lost principles.

I loved Mel Gibson's, “Signs”, “We Were Soldiers', and “Passion of the Christ”, but now it looks like he is falling in line with the Hollywood hate/blame Bush crowd by calling Bush a fear monger. It was not fear that killed 3,000 people on 9-11. And what does Mel propose? That we bury our heads in the sand and hope our enemies leave us alone?

I know...I just don't get it...unless he HAS been spending too much time with the "Hollywood elites"...OR, that he feels like his career, or future projects might be in trouble if he keeps backing President Bush or conservatives values...

The previews for his new movie looked pretty lame anyway. He must be worried that no one is going to go see his new stupid movie, so now he's trying to pander to the lunatic left in the hopes some of them will go see it. All he has accomplished is that his new movie will fail miserably now, since he has just ticked off a large percentage of the movie going public.

What an idiot.

Well I am so disappointed, it seems Pres. Bush. et al were just fine when he was wineing, dining, showing pre-release of his wonderful film Passion of the Christ.

Now we are not needed any more, his hate Bush crowd is needed.
I will not go to see his film no matter how good it may be. Spell checker says wineing is wrong, but do not know how else to spell it.

“The Passion of Christ” was a mega hit without Hollywood backing. He is alienating his normal conservative movie audience by these statements, because there is no appeal in this movie for a conservative audience. The appeal will be for those that see Bush as a fear monger. Its all about getting the right crowd in to buy tickets. Its going to bomb BIG TIME.

His particular brand of Catholicism (not the Pope's Catholicism), really, truly hates America. That's the end of the deal.

I think Mel knows this movie will flop, so he has to generate some sort of buzz, even if it means abandoning any so-called beliefs he may have had in order to earn a buck.

A sell-out in the worst way.

The movie "The Patriot" does not show Gibson's love of the USofA, IMHO. It is full of lies! It shows Gibson's hate of England and its primary religion.
