He did not define "THE MIDDLE GROUND" between amnesty and mass deportation.

That's what I was interesting in having him spell out. From my perspective, good speech... get ready for millions of socialist voting mexicans.

I don't agree at all about the "millions of socialist voting mexicans"....and also GWB did make clear there is a difference between mass amnesty and mass deportation.

Mass amnesty was what Ronald Reagan did. One minute you were illegal, the next minute every illegal was now legal.

GWB is stating back ground checks will have to be done on all current illegals (that are here) and they will have to go through a process before they are eligible to become a legal citizen. He also talked for the need of learning english, honoring this great country, etc, etc.

None of this was required under amnesty.

Yeah there's a shortage of Americans, you are correct. There's a shortage because we've aborted about 30 million people.

I live in Boston and I don't have to tell you how many liberals and Democrats live here. You would not believe how many of them I have spoken with who are adamantly against ANY type of amnesty. Buddies of mine who are libs and I laugh about this being the only political issue we agree on.

This problem has existed for over 30 years. In 1975 my husband and I were down in the Big Bend area and were warned not to camp out in the desert or if we did, no lights and keep quiet after dark, parking way off the road. We heard trucks all night long.

Now if you'd like to see a Depression magnitude reduction in the economy's size, maybe by 50% with your mother on the street selling apples like in 1930, then go ahead and reduce foreign worker count to zero.

We take in 1 million legal immigrants every year, more than any other country in the world combined. Our birth rate is above replacement thanks to immigration, legal and illegal. If we need more people, we should be the ones doing it, not allowing the poor, uneducated of Mexico and Cetnral America to self-select themselves. We are creating a permanent underclass who will not be assimilated.

I'd say nothing much has changed, the guard deployment, I'm going to have to see how it pans out but it sounds light to me

The only thing we will really gain from all this mess is a National ID card, it will never play as "only for guest workers".

It will become a right to work card issued to us all, biometric data, medical records, and anything else trackable.

Thats what I saw tonight.

I thought it was a great speech.

I come from the opposite side of this - I tend to like illegals, because they're hard workers. I, frankly, would probably be for the continuation of the status quo.

But there are a lot of people who want to do something to stem the flow of illegals, and I think his policies will help with that.

The most controversial part of his speech seems to be that he's not going to do mass deportations, which in my view would be way too disruptive to the economy. He wants to keep the people who have jobs and can pay taxes, while dumping those who can't. That seems fair to me and it would get rid of a lot of the disruptive types most of us agree should be gone.

One thing many of you should understand is that there are plenty of people like me around, who like illegals because they're hard workers and those we know and are in contact with are good people.

Because of folks like me, many of who are Republicans, he can't deport everyone without losing us from his base. And he can't do nothing or he'll lose you guys from his base.

I think he did an excellent job in trying to put together a fair compromise between people who have opposite views, which to be honest is about the toughest thing you can do in politics.

D

The same can be said of many in China, India, Vietnam, Haiti, etc. We can't take them all in. There has to be limits

I agree. I do think that his proposal will go a long way to stopping this. And, many undesirable people try to get in from Canada. That is one thing that bothers me about the proposal--why shut down catch and release only on the southern border? Stop it on the northern border, too.

The only part of the taxes extended was the Capitol gains. How about making it pernament while we have both houses, and the White House?

One will bleed us dry in taxes paying for free services and one will blow up buildings. So, we've got the quick or slow death.

Bush may cause the loss of the Senate, House and White House.
This is a real national issue and he did not just make it better.

He says one good thing and in the next sentence disables the good statement with another one.

It's enabling of Mexico and illegal immigration.
