Is President Bush now a hot commodity on TV?

Overnight ratings show Bush's 8 PM ET speech Monday night outpaced audience levels for the previous week in the same timeslot -- on ABC and FOX!

Bush pulled a 6.6 rating/11 share at 8PM on ABC [up from 5.1/8 for ABC last Monday 8 PM] and a 5.7/9 on FOX [up from 5.6/9].

CBS saw its rating under Bush dip to a 5.1 rating/8 share from a 5.9/9; NBC went 6.6/11 from 8.9/14.

A top network executive cautioned that the president should not sign up with William Morris -- just yet -- for a post-presidency TV career.

"The numbers do not fully represent the out of prime-time airing of the speech on the West Coast, and it should be noted regular programming did begin before 8:30 in some time zones, so he got a bump."

Developing...

An 11 share at 8 PM is nothing to get excited about. Given the magnitude of the president's speech topic, an 11 share is small number.

I think it had an awful lot to do with the season finales of Grey's Anatomy and Prison Break both airing last night -- and viewers not being sure if they'd start right when the President finished (which is what Fox did with Prison Break), or if they'd wait for 9 (which is what ABC did with Grey's), or if they wouldn't bother broadcasting the speech at all.

Not to mention, printed TV guides (and most onscreen guides) wouldn't have had the address listed; I'm sure lots of people turned on the TV at 8:00 having no idea there was about to be a presidential address.

Bush should do this AT THE VERY LEAST, once a month. Once every two weeks would be better, and once a week at best. Ask for prime time slots and everything. Nobody listens to those Saturday radio messages anyway, and they aren't terribly interesting.

Start POLITICKING a little more. Not all these polls are biased against Bush. The media is using their collective weight, hopping up and down, shifting, yanking and pulling down the Bush ratings/presidency with all its might, and the Bush administration isn't paying any attention to them or making an effort to counter their damage. Approval numbers translate to low political capitol, and you lose credibility and help from other DC allies (senators, congressman, etc.) in getting things done.

Although I agree with you, but I don't think that the public would like that at all. In fact, you would see much bigger protests than you did with the illegals. LOL.

I agree that the public would be livid at having their regularly scheduled entertainment interrupted every other week -- but on the other hand, if he DID want to record a weekly 5 minute ... I hate to call it a podcast, but why not? Doing a weekly 5 minute podcast and making it available to the cable networks as well? It's a pretty great way to get your undiluted message out.

Now that is a brilliant idea. In fact, it is amazing that he does not use the equipment that is available now adays. I thought that 20 minutes yesterday was about perfect time. Get it down to five with a perfect message would even be better. I don't see anyone complaining about that even if he did it everyday.
