Goldwater made two huge mistakes.
He did not vet his VP candidate enough, so the dims brought up Engleton had been hospitalized with depression.
The MSM and Democrats screamed the VP candidate was insane!
This was a large reason he lost the election.
The next thing he did was thinking McCain was a conservative and using his power in Arizona to get his senate seat.

I think your history is skewed. Thomas Eagleton, of depression fame, was George McGovern's VP candidate in 1972, until he was "fired" or removed himself. The MSM being against him actually helped Nixon. Goldwater's VP candidate was William Miller.
