Senate Vote Gives Immigration Bill Steam
AP on Yahoo ^ | 5/17/06 | Suzanne Gamboa - ap

WASHINGTON - The Senate voted Wednesday to exclude illegal immigrants convicted of a felony or three misdemeanors from a chance at remaining in the United States under what critics say is an amnesty program.

The unanimous vote on an amendment that before Easter had been considered a "poison pill" provided added momentum for broad immigration bill that would give legal status to millions of illegal immigrants and put many of them on a path toward citizenship.

The amendment by two of the bill's leading opponents, Republican Sens. Jon Kyl of Arizona and John Cornyn of Texas, was softened Tuesday in negotiations with the legislation's supporters. The sponsors agreed to include exceptions for hardship cases and those who didn't know a deportation order had been issued for them, winning the additional support.

"We want to keep those who could harm us, the criminal element, out," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), D-Mass., one of the authors of the bill. "Those who could benefit us ought to remain."

Critics of the legislation aren't giving up, however, and planned to keep trying to reshape the bill.

Sen. Jeff Sessions (news, bio, voting record), R-Ala., offered an amendment Wednesday that would erect more fencing along the nearly 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexican border, an idea similar to one in an enforcement-only bill passed by the House in December.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said Wednesday that lawmakers increasingly realize the need for a comprehensive plan that goes beyond trying to stop people at the border.

"If you just try to build a wall 30 feet high and 2,000 miles long, it will be insufficient. People will go up over it, around it, in order to get a job in this country," Frist said on CBS' "The Early Show."

Yep. Its all a fake-out. The Senate could care less what the American people want. At the end of the day, the law is not going to be enforced and criminal aliens will be allowed to stay here. So who the heck is Senator Ted Kennedy trying to kid?

Well, we gotta start somewhere Fristy. Let's start with shutting down the Department of Education and taking those funds to build the fence. Sacrifices need to be made, so let's start with the Federal Government.

Ok Bill. Maybe your right. Now, why don't you go ahead and build one just to humor us.

We keep hearing how this "just won't work", but they have never really tried it. Of course, aside from a fence or wall, they would have to step up the patrols of such a fence. When that is accomplished, I would gurantee Frist that illegals coming into this country would diminish by large margins.

For a lot of folks who cross the border, it is the ease of the task that draws them to do it. Obstacles do have a way of deterring folks. Using an old phrase, it "keeps honest people, honest"

Our current situation is analogous to placing a help wanted sign on the whole United States.

Just great. President Bush's speech yesterday. Next, the Senate passes the Amnesty for Illegals Bill under the phony label of 'Immigration Reform.' Today Mexico Voters Fear Nation on Edge of Chaos as elections near. What if the chaos in Mexico drives millions more over the border? Huh? Duh? Did anyone in the Senate consider the unstable and corrupt government in Mexico? Did a single Senator book a trip to Mexico City to learn about government corruption first hand? Nada por nada. Mexico's capitol is the kidnapping capitol of the world. Drug dealers cut off heads of police and display the heads in public. Organized crime runs the city. Doesn't anybody in D.C. study ithe ssues anymore? Or do they just go straight ahead with their plans to ruin the U.S. regardless?

None of this requires granting citizenship to those who entered the country illegally, yet that's what this bill seems to insist on. Legalization of some kind is almost inevitable. Granting citizenship is not. How long under this bill would it take to become a citizen anyway? It's ridiculous to insist on a 'path to citizenship'.

So, all a rapist/murderer has to do is say he didn't know he was ordered deported and that wins him citizenship and a lifetime of free welfare for him and 700 of his closest relatives?

Increased enforcement can be reversed in the future. However, citizenship, one granted, can not be reversed.

I've read that the Senate-Bush Amnesty and Immigration incrase plan will add 100-190 Million in the next 20 years. So yes, that could be almost 10 per year, and it would all be Legal.

Aren't our politicians great?

They also voted 69-28 to scuttle a Democratic amendment to exclude foreigners and recent illegal immigrants from a new guest worker program.

The Senate also approved on a voice vote an amendment reducing the number of foreigners who could participate in the guest worker program annually from at least 325,000 to no more than 200,000. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., also won approval for his proposal to add 1,000 more Border Patrol agents this year, 100 helicopters and 250 power(swift) boats.

"The Senate voted Wednesday to exclude illegal immigrants convicted of a felony or three misdemeanors from a chance at remaining in the United States under what critics say is an amnesty program."

This is good - if they grow some balz to enforce it. According to US Code Title 18, Section 1028 everyone who has in his/her possession or has used any form of falsified or stolen ID documents may be tried and if found guilty for such would be FELONS. That would include illegal aliens - essentially shutting them out from AMNESTY, unless there's an AMNESTY for that also....

What a bunch of garbage! Deport them all! If they are here illegally now, they may not try to enter legally for at least 10 years. Make an amendment with cajones. Make it so impossible to come or live here illegally, they will try to do it the right, legal way like most others who can't just walk across the border.
