Sessions amendment (SA 3979)
Summary: Requires DHS to construct at least 370 miles of triple-layered fencing (which may include portions already constructed in San Diego, Tucson and Yuma Sectors) and 500 miles of vehicle barriers in other areas along the southwest border that DHS determines are areas that are most often used by smugglers and illegal aliens attempting to gain illegal entry, and requires that construction thereof be completed within two years.

Good news and bad. Good news in that a serious fence is being built, albeit for only 380 miles. If it's 380 miles of the most heavily traveled parts of the border, that will certainly help.

Bad news in that this increases the chance the bill will get past the House. Which is the point of the amendment I'm sure.

Still, I'm glad to see this happen. Sets a good precedent in that since we already will have a 380 mile fence, why not just double it in size a few years from now?

The President is not against the fence/wall. I believe he even mentioned it in his speech Monday.

According to the Vice President yesterday on Rush's show:

"It is given serious consideration, not a wall, for example, from ocean to ocean. There are a lot of places out there where it doesn't make sense. There are other places where it does. I'm told -- I'm not an expert in this by any means -- that when you get into built-up urban areas fences -- "security barriers" might be a better word for it -- are in fact an important part of the overall plan and need to be part of it. There are other areas where you've got vast spaces out there where you need other kinds of arrangements"

A caller just called in and talked about how people start off with low paying jobs and then move up as they gain more skills, and especially, their kids become full fledged hard working Americans and how these folks reduce the cost of nearly everything for all Americans and increase prosperity across the country.

This is true and the same thing happens with the minimum wage laws, which you eloquently argue against. People start off low and work their way up. When the minimum wage is raised, they often aren’t hired at all, hurting them, employers, and US consumers.

I think this is a contradiction you need to address.

I don't favor expanding government to restrict employers (just like the family medical leave act which you just, also eloquently, argued against), in who they hire, illegal or not.

As far as immigrants 'taking' American jobs, IMO, if you need government to protect your job, if you're own skill, work ethic, and diligence can't hold the job for you, then you don't deserve it in the first place.

WASHINGTON - The Senate voted to build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the Mexican border Wednesday, and clashed over citizenship for millions of men and women who live in the United States illegally.

Amid increasingly emotional debate over election-year immigration legislation, senators voted 83-16 to add fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along the southern border. It marked the first significant victory in two days for conservatives seeking to place their stamp on the contentious measure.

The prospects were less favorable for their attempt to strip out portions of the legislation that could allow citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants and create new guest worker programs.
