New York Times Ad Revenue Down in April

© 2006 The Associated Press

NEW YORK — New York Times Co. _ parent of its flagship newspaper, the Boston Globe and other media holdings _ on Wednesday said advertising revenue slipped 1.6 percent in April.

The company attributed the decline to the timing of the Easter holiday, which fell in April this year and in March last year. Advertising revenue totaled $217.6 million versus $221.1 million a year ago.

"Easter Sunday is traditionally a time of reduced advertising at both the New York Times and the Boston Globe," said President and Chief Executive Janet L. Robinson.

By segment, the New York Times Media Group saw advertising revenue dip 2.1 percent during the month, which was hurt by a shift of the New York Times Style Magazine supplement to May. National advertising revenue at the group decreased due to weakness in technology, American fashion and media advertising, somewhat offset by strength in advocacy and pharmaceuticals.

The company's New England Media Group posted a 13.3 percent decline, while its Regional Media Group reported growth of 5.3 percent.

Total company revenue in April rose 0.1 percent to $324.3 million, compared with $324 million in the 2005 month.

So far this year, advertising revenue is up 2.3 percent over the same period a year ago to $772.3 million. Total company revenue has climbed 2.3 percent, as well, to $1.16 billion.

This is starting to sound like "Journey to the Center of the Earth" where they just keep on boring (a dual-use term in this case) their way downward.

It greatly pleases me that accelerating MSM bad news now requires monthly updates instead of staid quarterly updates. :)
