LIVE Thread: Senate Immigration Bill Amendment Votes

Posted on 05/18/2006 7:58:51 AM PDT by Altair333

I didn't see any thread for the votes on the amendments today- if anyone is watching C-SPAN at home I'd appreciate reports. I understand Ted Kennedy has proposed an amendment that would gut the Cornyn amendment which passed only 50-48 yesterday. Sen. Inhofe has an amendment to make English the official language. The most important one is Sen. Vitter's proposed amendment that would require more reliable documentation before aliens establish a right to citizenship. If this doesn't pass, any illegal can just get some forged employment certificate or affidavit and they will all get citizenship.

English as the official language amendment being debated now. Listen for senator Kennedy to oppose this amendment using his own garbled tongue.

Byrd made a floor speech earlier today; said he would oppose the Amnesty bill.

It seems as though Byrd is good at stopping at lot of things, many things that I would like to see pass. But on this issue, Thank God for Senator Byrd.

I saw Byrd. It was amazing. This guy in the last couple of years has definitely always ended up on the right side of any issue.

Byrd stopped that last attempt at Amnesty in 2002 (IIRC) on a 'technicality'. Maybe he can do the same on this one.

Kennedy is a disgusting pig whose time in office is long overdue to expire. Every three years (I'm including the election of Kerry) the voters of Massachussetts enter the "Anals of the Truly Stupid". His immigration plan in 1965 deceived everyone, and we're still paying the price for it today. He's still at it. He must be stopped or neutralized at all cost!

I have never called him "Sheets" because I believe him when he said he regretted his past associations, kinda like Strom Thurmond, Republicans were able to forgive him.

Now, don't get me wrong, or try to read more into my words than is there, I disagree alot with Senator Byrd, but Senator Byrd is on the right side of this issue, in my view, and for that I am thankful.

True... but he sure appears to have made a moral turn-around in the last few years proving you're never too old to sit back, reflect on your past and make appropriate changes. He must be feeling a touch of mortality at his advanced age.

The only reason he "regrets" his past is because it is public. He is still the same person.

Sen. Obama also has an amendment that would stop the guest worker program if the unemployment rate in the US hits 9 percent (it's about 5 percent now). I agree with that, but I gather there's also some provision in his amendment dealing with minimum wages. So it may be a trojan horse amendment.

Plus, he is up for re-election, maybe that has something to do with it. I would guess the voters of conservative, hard working, God-fearing West Virginia are not too keen on amnesty.

Byrd is a shamless panderer of votes. Look at the long list of "Robert Byrd" Federal Buildings he had built in VA.

I was also shocked at Byrd's stand, on this issue. Now, I wonder how many of the illegals are going to register with the Selective Service, which they are required to do?

There is no doubt he is one of the worst pork spenders in this nation's history. But only the people of W. Virginia can solve that problem, which maybe they will in November.

That is becuase they don't need amnesty since they did not in his view break the law in the first place to require amnesty.

"Is Graham finally coming around????"

Heck no, he's been voting with the Mexicans on pretty much all of the amendments. Even the one which reduced the number of guest workers, which passed 79 to 18. That's the big one as far as I'm concerned- glad it passed.

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00124

Graham also voted against enforcement first:

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00121

This guy's a RINO to the core, but like McCain he tries to throw us off his trail from time to time with some of his rhetoric.

That was a big deal at the time, and he wasn't up for re-election that year, nor was the issue at the fever pitch it is now. Byrd's motivation appears to be patriotism. Go figure.

Thanks for that clarification. Graham has been a real disappointment for me. I would be even more disappointed if I had voted for him. At least the voters will get a chance to correct their mistake when he is up for re-election.

He didn't like seeing all the mexican flags during the illegal alien marches.

Looks like the swimmers amendment passed watering down Cronyn amendment.

Yeah. I guess his use of the phrase "white n**ger" a couple of years ago shows that he's left his past completely behind.

I've been watching it. They are rearranging things as a couple of Senators need to leave. Graham basically said he wants English recognized as the official language of the US
but that isn't to change any govt service now offered in a different language. Seems symbolic more than anything.

Now John Ensign (R) Nevada is talking about identity theft and Social Security fraud by illegals and giving examples.

That Byrd thinks it's just fine to use the "n" word in public, on national television, in the 21st century, shows that he hasn't changed at all.

In some of my darker moments I try to imagine what kind of immigration law Ted Kennedy would pass if he were able to pass whatever he wanted, no compromises required.

I can imagine our Navy being used to pick up African refugees and bring them to the US.
