Hastert hot over CIA chief's firing [goes off on Cheney]
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | May 18, 2006 | Robert Novak

Posted on 05/18/2006 12:07:48 PM PDT by AntiGuv

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, a 64-year-old ex-high school wrestling coach, ordinarily is not a shouter. But according to Capitol Hill sources, he engaged in a high-decibel rant last week when he met with Vice President Dick Cheney. The speaker was enraged by the sacking of his friend and former colleague, Porter Goss.

Hastert was so vituperative that a private session with President Bush in the living quarters of the White House was scheduled immediately (although Hastert aides said the meeting had been planned previously). The speaker toned down his volume on the hallowed ground and did more listening than talking. But the president did not slake Hastert's wrath over the abrupt sacking of Goss as CIA director.

That wrath reflects the feeling in the House Republican cloakroom that Goss, who gave up a safe congressional seat from Florida for a thankless cleanup mission at the CIA, is being made a scapegoat for the government's intelligence mess. But Hastert's discontent goes beyond the CIA. The GOP mood on Capitol Hill, particularly the House, is poisonous. With pessimism rising over a contemplated loss of their majority in the 2006 elections, Republican lawmakers blame their parlous condition on Bush's performance.

I find it very difficult to believe Hastert can get hot over anything...he's been asleep in the House for how long now?

I hope he keeps that anger when he appoints the House members of the immigration bill reconciliation committee.

You gonna let Bush and Rove get their way on immigration after stiffing you on the Goss issue, Hastert?

Amen. If he had the passion for closing the border that he has for his friend getting sacked we'd be there by now.

"Save your anger for the Shamnesty bill Hastert!"

Hey, whatever gets Hastert worked up against Rove/Bush is fine with me. I couldn't care less about the Goss issue, but I'd support folks carrying signs saying "Goss must be avenged" outside Hastert's office when it comes time to deal with the immigration bill.

They blame Bush? If those jackasses weren't spending money like drunken sailors we'd be a lot better off. Granted that Bush hasn't used the veto but these guys have no room to talk.

With pessimism rising over a contemplated loss of their majority in the 2006 elections, Republican lawmakers blame their parlous condition on Bush's performance.

If they would pay attention, they would see their own polls are lower than the Pres. The gop led house and senate are just as responsible, if not more so, than the pres for their mess. They have been nearly as effective at undermining the Pres on many issues as the dims. Screw em all.

"A president waging a global war against terror can hardly function with an intelligence agency whose employees make off-the-record speeches against his policies, contribute to his political opponents and leak secrets to the news media."

Sounds like Novak is jealous he isn't getting these any more. I suspect no one trusts him after he leaked about Plame though told not to by his sources.

When will he tell us who his first source is?

I wish these "offended" Republicans will get just as upset and vent their anger at Dimocraps for the sake of our country as much as they seem to get upset at their personal standings.

Sure GOP, place the blame on Bush. You guys are the ones who submitted legislation to him to sign. Look in the mirror. It's a whole lot of your own fault.

Show me another issue today that will result in the US becoming a much poorer and less educated nation with a divided culture in a few decades and I'll be all over it.

Until then I'm going to be all over immigration rather than gay marriage or Schiavo or whatever other comparatively irrelevant issues the RINOs in Congress want to distract us with.

Let's hope your right.

ONLY if the Republican Majority in Congress can take the popular position on the illegal invader issue, the Administration be damned, can they hope to survive the anticipated backlash against the President - a situation so uncredible and unprecedented as to be nearly unique in American History. Bush went from being one of the most popular Presidents in history to one of the least popular simply becasue he allowed himslef to be sandbagged by the Dems - just like his father - and becasue he alienated his base on critical issues.

My own take is Bush simply doesn't care what happens after he leaves office - but if the Dems take over Congress in 2006, he may leave sooner than he thinks - which would not be good for the war on terror regardless of his insane border policies.

Gee imagine the rage from the Always Squealing the day this all collapses and NOTHING gets done about the Illegals due to their rabid ignorance and knee jerk 100%erism.

But of course, that will be someone else's fault since the Knee Jerk Whiner never ever bother to accept the consequences for their stupidity. No it is always someone else fault that they are acting like petulant children. Then when NOTHING can get passed, they will have something to whine about for ever instead of getting SOME solutions in place. Then 2 years from now we can listen to them all squeal like pigs about 40 million illegals. The problem needs action NOW NOT this mindless screaming and sloganeering from the Fringe Freepers.

Time for the Perpetual Whiners to grow up. No one but spoiled Children expect to get only 100% of what they want 100% of the time.

The bill set to be passed by the Senate not only legalizes the 11 million illegal aliens but allows their spouses and children to enter the country legally immediately and it then allows their brothers and sisters and elderly parents to come on over once the illegals gain citizenship. And it allows ALL of them to claim public benefits. Maybe you're looking forward to paying for the nursing home care of some elderly parent of a former illegal alien who never paid a bit of taxes. I, however, am not.

I'll take doing nothing over that result any day of the week.

Even Goss has said he resigned voluntarily which if he really didn't he shouldn't have said anything. I think he resigned because some people he had trusted turned out to be rats and he was going to have a hard time dealing with it. They know who the leaker's are but now they need someone that can deal with them.

Actually try to learn some facts on what is going on IN DC instead of screaming your ignorance louder and louder. There is little support for your sort of 'Deport them all', dogma here. We want a Illegal Immigration solution, NOT the endless emotion based screaming of nonsensical slogans by the totally uninformed.

In a Constitutional Republic it has to be a solution agreed to by MOST the people. Not just the "We HATE everyone" crowd. Sorry the Flame geeks do not get 100% of only what they want out of the Immigration Bill Too bad. Screaming their rage and ignorance louder and louder will not suddenly create the votes in the Congress for them. Right now all the Anti Illegal Ranters are doing by posting the same ignorant ranting over and over and over and over is alienating everyone around you who MIGHT be on your side. Preaching to the Choir does ONE thing, wears out your voice. The Anti Illegals need to develop a LOT more rationality and considerably less emotion based ranting

That would be great if I had ever said "deport them all" but I didn't. I DO say that any "solution" which gives the illegal aliens the rights to the benefits of full citizenship, including the right to bring over their siblings and parents will do great harm to this nation.

My pragmatic solution would be to give the 11 million illegals some sort of guarantee against deportation as long as they work and have broken no laws. But no rights other than a guarantee against deportation. At the same time I would be very strict in workplace enforcement, thus encouraging the illegals to go home themselves due to a lack of jobs. And if they lose their jobs and turn to crime, THEN deport them.

Whoa...you're right. For a minute there I thought Hastert had a pulse.

I remember when he became Speaker. Our youngest boy was walking through the living room while the news was on an Hastert was speaking. Our son did a double take and asked if that had been "Drew Carey" talking.
