On Monday, Boston College will have its commencement and graduates will gather to hear an address from Dr. Condoleezza Rice, the United States secretary of state.
She is arguably the highest-ranking African-American woman in the three centuries or so that African women have been present in America. She is the secretary of state of the most powerful nation on earth. She is discussed regularly as a candidate to be president of the United States.
Yet 200 or so students at Boston College, along with some professors, will be protesting her presence at Boston College, protesting especially the school conferring upon her an honorary doctorate.
Why? The students say they object to her presence because she doesn't represent their values.
An adjunct professor and part-time novelist named Steve Almond actually quit over her appearance saying in his resignation letter that he and others object to her because she is a liar.
...........
When it comes to the students we have to consider some facts. These are students whose parents have paid upwards of a $1,000 a week for them to be in the school. They have lived protected and sheltered lives. They didn't suffer an attack on 9/11.
They haven't fought the wars that followed. They have virtually no experience in life, except what happened before they left home and what happened when the college professors got hold of them.
Condoleezza Rice helped free more women in Afghanistan and Iraq than anybody has ever freed in the history of man. She is playing a major role in a solution to the war in Darfur.
Condi Rice doesn't represent their values. I should say not, since their values seem to be intolerance, closed-mindedness and the cocksureness of youth that allows a college student to pass judgment on a secretary of state.

hahaha, as a college student, I really appreciate this article. Seriously.
I may not have lost anyone close to me in the 9/11 attacks, nor have I had to go to war myself, but when it comes down to it, we're all Americans, dammit. And that's reason enough for me to support an administration that's willing to do something about the problem.
As Mr. Bush is so fond of saying...
God bless our troops, God bless the cause of freedom, and God bless America...
Reading comments from college students such as you gives me hope for the future. God bless you!
LOL!...Secretary Rice did Boston College a real favor by causing that pin headed adjuct professor to resign. She is also a very intelligent genuine lady.
thank you! and God bless you! just glad to do my part in fighting the stereotype! =P
What year are you? Are you in a frat?
I just finished my 4th year, but I have one more semester to go. I have an internship (in Houston, 3rd summer) and then head back to UT (Austin, the big one, National Champs!) in the fall. I'll be graduating in December, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
I've really enjoyed the ride. I say I can't wait to start working full time and travelling the world, but I know I'm gonna miss the college life!
oh, and nope, no frat. but my roommates and I have thrown enough parties to qualify as my own fraternity! =P
You're not crazy, I think you're right. She's too intelligent to want to live her life as a politician, IMO. I can also picture her as the head of an institute of higher learning, and I believe a very good one. Actually, as accomplished as she is, she'll be excellent at whatever she chooses to do.
Mechanical Engineering - Yikes. Good for you! You'll do great in the world, I'm sure.
Doesn't she aspire to be the NFL Commissioner? Cool.
thanks for the kind words! I intend to! =)
yeah, this damn Hooveresque economy. I've received TOO MANY job offers, all about 8 months before I graduate. A good problem to have. But dont let anyone tell you this economy is in shambles...
so what do you do?
Another college student here. And yeah, a bit more respect and levelheadedness are needed on today's campuses. Hopefully, we'll find those fine qualities in time.
My money is that we won't.
"yeah, this damn Hooveresque economy. I've received TOO MANY job offers, all about 8 months before I graduate. A good problem to have. But dont let anyone tell you this economy is in shambles...

According to the MSM, the economy is in the toilet. LOL - the joke's on them.
I recently moved back to the midwest after being in Los Angeles for the last 18 years. I returned to take care of my elderly mom who we took out of assisted living because she didn't need it and it became way too expensive. I was in the entertainment business in LA but I'm not working now. I'm very homesick for LA and my job but am so happy to be back in the midwest and in a red state.
Elsewhere I have seen it reported that this guy has a rock-bottom rating at that Rate-A-Prof site, and what little rating he got was because his class is "easy".
He is obviously attempting to become the next Ward Churchill. He is probably sitting at home trying to arrange "Speaking Truth to Power" speaking engagements, though up until now no one's ever heard of him.
Great! Maybe he can team up with Ward Churchill and form a sort of Collegiate Liars Club?!
Ha! Great minds think alike (see my post immediately above!).
well God bless you and your mother...and youll get back to LA someday, dont you worry! =)
I'm out, I have a big date tomorrow (with a model!) and need my sleep! hahaha
night, all!
She's carried too much water for Bush. If she remains in Washington, it will by by way of Presidential appointment, not electoral success.
Shame. But true.
Gibson has the #3 show at FNC, for me. Hume, Cavuto, then Gibson. The rest of the program lineup generally isn't worth watching; I TiVo those 3.

I'm sure this "professor" is very consistent in his dislike of liars! < /s >
It just amazes me how someone that smart to become a professor can be so stupid and blind to the truth.
I believe hanoi Jane Fonda would be a better choice of speaker for Boston College. she seems to meet their criteria .
Or maybe, Notre Dame. ;)
A minority of pinheads. BC has over 13,000 under and post-graduate students and 650 professors.
Well thats true lol. I am trying to remember but didnt she actually attend Notre Dame. Of course football at Notre Dame would prob interest her more especially in the coming years than LSU would I hate to admit
Such students and faculty should be expelled from the university. They clearly have NO class; that is, they are incapable of treating others with dignity and respect. Just get rid of them. The entire country will be better off! You do not have to agree with someone to host them in a polite manner. Their crass behavior is unbelieveable for supposedly educated people! Apparently they have been paying too much attention to the way the Democrats are behaving in their lack of civility.
BTTT
