Our illegal immigration counters are based on an estimated twenty million illegal aliens having been present in our nation as of January 1, 2004.
In a letter dated February 2004, no less an authority than Arizona Senator John McCain recognized that Border Patrol apprehension figures demonstrated that "almost four million people crossed our borders illegally 2002" (read McCain's letter) experts on the subject agree that illegal crossings have only increased since then.
The Tucson sector Border Patrol union local 2544 on the number of illegal aliens in our nation: "There are currently 15 to 20 million illegal aliens in this country by many estimates, but the real numbers could be much higher and the numbers increase every day because our borders are not secure (no matter what the politicians tell you - don't believe them for a second)". the wise old owl says'three'
US citizens = 298 million
Illegals = 28 million
What's the ratio of taxpayers to freebie-getters? You do the math.
Mexico was 107 million, less 30 million now in US, who will make our Ford Trucks now?
"How many illegal aliens are in the US?"
Way, way, way, way to many!!!!!!!
DEPORT them all they are overcrowding every aspect of American life, ride down any street and one feels like they are in mexico.
And if the 28 million get amnesty, they'll be able to bring in their relatives, many of them old and not working who'll be eligible for Social Security, having never worked a day in this country.
So the 28 million number could easily triple if Bush and the Senate get their way.
TUB-O-LARD was already sticking it to America back in '65, when Mary Jo Kopechne was 24 and still breathing.
I don't think they are all Mexicans.
No, but the vast majority are. 2,000 New Zealanders aren't sneaking across our southern border every day.
Annual alien registration law should be immediately re-enacted....
How can anyone in their right mind pass laws to solve a problem when they don't know how massive the problem is? Oh wait, these are politicians doing this???? Now I understand!!!
"No matter how the Bush administration and Congress act on illegal immigration in the US, any legislation or executive order is unlikely to answer the question: How many immigrants living in the country today are here illegally?
Depending on the source, the numbers range widely - from about 7 million up to 20 million or more.
Nailing down such figures is impossible. Even settling on a ballpark figure is difficult given the official sources: the US Census, apprehensions along the US-Mexico border, and social service agencies. For one thing, illegal immigrants avoid responding to census questionnaires, states a 2005 report by Bear Stearns Asset Management Inc. in New York.
Based on the national census in 2000, the US Census Bureau puts the estimate of illegal immigrants at 8.7 million. As of 2003, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services put the number at 7 million. Since then, United States immigration officials have said the number has grown by as much as 500,000 a year.
Those closest to the fight to protect US borders say the figure is higher. The US Border Patrol union Local 2544 in Tucson, Ariz., says the total number of illegal immigrants in the US today is between 12 million and 15 million.
The Pew Hispanic Center, a nonpartisan research organization in Washington, estimates 11.5 million to 12 million "unauthorized migrants" live in the US today. It bases its numbers on the "Current Population Survey," a monthly assessment of about 50,000 households jointly conducted by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau.
But in a letter to a constituent in 2004, Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona wrote: "According to the US Border Patrol apprehension statistics, almost four million people crossed our borders illegally in 2002." Although many are caught and made to leave the country, a significant number try again. No one knows for sure how many succeed, but Senator McCain's assertion would mean that the number crossing the border and disappearing into the US economy could be much higher than official estimates.
"Deriving estimates of the number of unauthorized, or illegal, immigrants is difficult because the government lacks administrative records of their arrival and departure, and because they tend to be undercounted in the census and other surveys of the population," wrote the Congressional Budget Office in 2004.
Citing school enrollments, foreign remittances, border crossings, and housing permits, researchers at Bear Stearns reported "significant evidence that the census estimates of undocumented immigrants may be capturing as little as half of the total undocumented population."
There may be as many as 20 million illegal immigrants in the US today - more than twice the official Census Bureau estimate, according to Bear Stearns researchers Robert Justich and Betty Ng.
Looking at states where most of the undocumented population lives today, they reported "very dramatic increases in services required in communities that have become gateways for immigration." These include public school enrollment, language proficiency programs, and building permits. (California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina account for about half the undocumented population.)
In addition, Bear Stearns found, these new undocumented workers are sending home significant amounts of money, suggesting that their numbers are considerably higher than official estimates. "Between 1995 and 2003, the official tally of Mexicans has climbed 56 percent, and median weekly wage has increased by 10 percent," the researchers found. "Yet total remittances jumped 199 percent over the same period. Even considering the declining costs of money transfers, the growth of remittances remains astounding."
One variable involves the relatives that join those coming across the border and form larger family units.
Nearly 14 million people (including 4.7 million children) live in "mixed status" families - in which the head of the household or the spouse is in the US illegally - Pew reported last summer. This is partly because children born in the US- regardless of their parents' legal status - are automatically US citizens.
"The large number of US citizen children born to parents with no legal status highlights one of the thorniest dilemmas in developing policies to deal with the unauthorized population," said Roberto Suro, director of the Pew Hispanic Center.
Whatever the total is, the annual number of illegal immigrants has exceeded those coming legally for at least the past 10 years: 700,000 illegally compared with 610,000 legally, according to Pew.
The number of "unauthorized migrants" (which includes some who have temporary permission to live in the US or those whose immigration status is unresolved), also has grown since legalization programs began in the mid-1980s, Pew reported last month: About 180,000 a year in the 1980s; 400,000 per year from 1990-1994; 575,000 per year from 1995-1999; and 850,000 per year from 2000-2005.
There's no doubt that Americans are concerned about the issue. "A growing number believe that immigrants are a burden to the country, taking jobs and housing and creating strains on the healthcare system," the Pew Hispanic Center wrote recently. "Many people also worry about the cultural impact of the expanding number of newcomers in the US."
Between 2000 and 2006, for example, the percentage of those polled who feel that immigrants are a burden because they take jobs and housing grew from 38 percent to 52 percent. At the same time, those who feel that immigrants "strengthen the US with their hard work and talents" dropped from 50 percent to 41 percent. In just the past 15 months, those who say "the growing number of newcomers from other countries threaten traditional American customs and values" has grown from 40 percent to 48 percent. Meanwhile, those who say newcomers "strengthen American society" has dropped from 50 percent to 45 percent."

The estimates were that one million would petition in the 1986 amnesty, but it turned out to be 3 million.
Yep, even here in rural Tennessee.
All we really need to do is enforce the laws already on the books. Go after the employers. Stick a few high profile employer/managers in jail. I suggest starting with the carpet mills in NW Georgia and Tyson chicken processing plants in various states. Once the jobs dry up these folks will deport themselves....
"Once the jobs dry up these folks will deport themselves...."
Bigtime amen to that, T.
People are hiding their heads in the sand and wishing it will all go away when fact and statistic after statistic proves they are a detriment they are a burden theya re socialists plain and simple and they are destroying America!
Deport illegals it's the Conservative thing to do!

"It costs you, the taxpayer, $68 billion a year JUST to pay for the resettlement of legal immigrants. "
Newt Gingrich mentions a 36 million figure....
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/printer-friendly.asp?ARTICLE_ID=50196
Illegals = 28 million
And when the "not an amnesty" go into effect, how many relatives will be allowed into the US?
So in one day the number went from 20 million to 29 million! Does anyone even pause to think what NONSENSE this all is? Anytime the Perpetually Pissed lose a Senate vote, the number magically expands!
I doubt most will leave willingly. The safety net of entitlements is way better than what they had back home, and what if their native countries refuse to take them back -- like China? Besides, they've seen what decent life can be. If we, on the other hand, set up some kind of Marshall Plan for Mexico and points south, jobs would result and some would leave. However, Mexican corruption is so deep and widespread, any Marshall Plan would be extortion.
Nothing magic about it. De facto open borders and a president who won't enforce the law.
Mexico is 107 million now plus however many millions in the US now. The US census for 2000 had 9 million Mexican-born residents of the US. The census is notorious for understating the numbers. A Bear-Stearns report places the number of illegals at 20 million.
From the American Resistance website:
Illegal aliens in the U.S. since Jan. 1 1,393,236
illegal immigrants in United States - Mexicans make up nearly 70 percent of total, figures show," (CNN News
2003 Mexico Population 104.9 million Yearly increase 1.3%
At this rate we'll have 3,661,003 illegals this year, of which 2,562,702 (70%) will be from Mexico. Mexico's population grows by 1,368,700 each year. That must mean that if the illegals were to stay in Mexico their population would have been growing by almost 4 million every year.
Think of it, most kids born in Mexico move to the US to become illegal aliens.
Simply unbelievable.
"According to Maxine Margolis, author of An Invisible Minority: Brazilians in New York City, the discrepancies started well over a decade ago. The 1990 census, for example, recorded only 9,200 Brazilians in New York City, while the local Brazilian consulate estimated 100,000 Brazilians at that time. The Brazilian foreign office placed the number at 230,000; Dr. Margolis also noted that comparisons of the Boston Archdiocese and Brazilian consulate records with U.S. census records show a startling 10 to 1 difference. The latest census taken in 2000 significantly revised the number of illegal immigrants upward versus 1990 projections. The INS also increased their estimates. Upward revisions to such projections have been a consistent trend."
I read the Bear Stearn study some time ago, and it is by far the most complete and, in my opinion, credible study I've seen.
Seven?

And it was only 7 million three years ago.
A four-fold increase in three years means that a child born today will see the number of illegal aliens reach 800,690,104,046,726,000,000,000 in his lifetime..
Truly unbelievable.
They are not all from Mexico.
Be sure to remember that 1/2 to 2/3 of the democRAT voters are also freebie-getters. This country has a fast-growing deadbeat population.
Would you rather be poor and jobless in Mexico, El Salavador, Guatemala, or Haiti or in the US? People are deluding themselves if they believe that the illegals will go home after getting into the US at great risk and expense. There is a large support network in the US, which will help them. 40% of the population of Mexico live below their poverty level. The first thing we need to do is shut off the supply by securing the border and tracking down visa overstays and change the law regarding anchor babies.
It is criminal to establish public policy, i.e., comprehensive immigration reform, without knowing the size and extent of the problem. The Senate bill needs to be deep sixed and never see the light of day.
Thanks for the Excellent URL to a disturbing PDF report:
"Four to six million jobs have shifted to the underground market,"
"Cell phones, internet and low-cost travel have allowed immigrants easier illegal access to the United States and increased their ability to find employment and
circumvent immigration laws."
"The large infusion of the imported labor supply has reduced average annual earnings by approximately 4 to 6 percent."
"The social expenses of health care, retirement funding,
education and law enforcement are potentially accruing at $30 billion per year."
"On the revenue side, the United States may be foregoing $35 billion a year in income tax collections because of the number of jobs that are now off the books. Illegal aliens offer below market labor costs and many employers circumvent regulations to take advantage of the laissez faire government enforcement process. We estimate that approximately 5 million illegal workers are collecting wages on a cash basis and are avoiding income taxes"
"illegal workers are collecting wages on a cash basis and are avoiding income taxes."
You can use reductio ad absurdum arguments all you want to discredit the high end of the scale, but we do know from the border patrol, census figures, and our lying eyes that the number of foreign born residents in the US is at an all time high and comprises at least 11.3% of the total population.
EASILY.
I agree and the problem is WAY bigger than what is being reported. However, if you take away the jobs by prosecuting those who hire illegals, knowingly or otherwise, plus end all benefits to illegals, i.e., schools, medical treatment for anything beyond life threatening injuries, and stop all wire transfers of money to Mexico and points south, many will go home. I also think we need to end the birthright provision.
I find it particularly galling that these folks come here to escape their own corrupt government, then have the audacity to complain when we want to close the border, especially in the wake of 9/11. If you or I were to cross into Mexico illegally and get caught we would be charged with a Felony. Similarly, if we were to work undocumented in Mexico and get caught we would be charged with a Felony. At the very least we need to make our immigration and work laws mirror the Mexican laws.
One thing is for sure, the Politico's on both sides of the aisle had better get on the right side of this issue or there will be a bloodbath in the voting booths come November. I talk to folks every single day who are fed up with the invasion.
Do you want to get sick to your stomach? Just do a search for "corruption" and "Border Patrol". In Nogales, Naco, Agua Prieta, and Juarez, Mexico, they are considered a joke, and in Tucson the Border Patrol union local 2544 is a four-letter word. The corruption in the BP is considered one of the best kept secrets in the USA.
"Triple", I think studies have shown that on average those people who received amnesty in 86 brought in 5 additional people each. You do the math.
Hey, don't get me wrong. If you say that your "lying eyes" have seen 34 million illegal aliens I believe that you're literally correct.
That would be my estimate, having never believed the 11 to 12 million figgure. All one has to do to bebunk the 11 million falsehood is to drive down the street and check out who is in cars.
In the South just drive into the parking lot of your local Welfare or WIC office and take a look at those standing in line outside. Yeah the lines of those signing up run way outside the doors, you don't even have to go in.
The brave can drive through apartment builing parking lots beteen the hours of four and seven. A more accurate figgure would be 30 to 35 million.
I think there are over 40 million illegal crimmigrants here in the USA.
Remember the President's failed initiative to strengthen Social Security?
Now it comes to mind that perhaps the feds have recognized that adding a few million people to the contributions side of Social Security could prop up the fund for a few years without taking congressional action.
How convenient that suddenly adding 10 million illegals to the tax rolls could add enough new money to fill the short term gap in the fund.
Just a thought here. But it could explain how a back door agenda would promote granting illegals worker status.
Those are big "ifs." I don't see the political will to make many of those changes. Moreover the courts, the ACLU, La Raza, and pandering politicians will throw obstacle after obstacle to prevent a crackdown on those already here. The politicians can tell us, with a straight face, that there are too many here to deport knowing full well that they are the ones who are responsible for the failure to enforce our laws and secure our borders.
One thing is for sure, the Politico's on both sides of the aisle had better get on the right side of this issue or there will be a bloodbath in the voting booths come November. I talk to folks every single day who are fed up with the invasion.
I wouldn't take it out on the House Republicans, who for the most part, are our last defense against what amounts to open borders.
I always put it like this to people:
U.S. has about 300 million people. There are about 30 million illegals here. That means, go to the mall and 1 out of every 10 people you pass is here illegally.
Their mouth usually drops open.
That is a question which our government should be able to answer. I do know that Bush and most of the Senate do not know the answer, don't care that they don't know the answer, and certainly don't care that amnesty which they call a comprehensive immigration plan will only greatly increase a number which is given no weight in their equation for solving the immigration problem.
Ah! so you ARE a building contractor in Tucson or Silver Springs or somewhere?...
Probably a democrat too...
You do know; after the amnesty "they" ALL will be democrats don't you?... Ah! I thought so..
The last thing America, right now, OR EVER NEEDS, is one more democrat, which is a statistic, 10 to 20+ million of them is a tragedy.. If Bush feints at; but does NOT solve this problem, you do know, it will fracture the republican party don't you?..
Consider 20+ million MORE democrats and a fractured republican party.. Do you work for Hillary?.. Just ASKING... or are you Hillary?...
Your sarcasm is lost on me. I never mentioned 34 million or any number as the correct one. You failed to respond to my question: How many illegal aliens do you believe are in the country?
We do know from census figures that Mexican-born residents were the largest foreign born group in 18 states in 1990 and are now the largest group in 30 states. In North Carolina the number of Mexican-born residents went from 8,751 in 1990 to 179,236 in 2000. The number of Mexican-born residents in the US went from 4,224,744 in 1990 to 9,161,419 in 2000. The number of FB residents from Latin America (Spanish speaking countries) increased from 7,224,046 in 1990 to 14,203,404 in 2000. I believe these numbers are understated.
In terms of "my lying eyes," I have seen the demographics of the Washington DC metro area change dramatically over the last ten years. The main influx has been from El Salavador. I live just a few miles from now famous Herndon, VA, which approved the establishment of a taxpayer funded Center for the illegals to congregate rather than around the 7/11 store and other businesses. The town council was recently thrown out of office for that action. Still, I can drive a few miles and rent-a-man any day of the week. Hundreds of Hispanic males are picked up daily by local businesses and individuals to work. These transactions are part of the underground ecomomy. Similar centers are located throughout the Metro area.
A few years ago, I had a roof put on my house by a local roofing company, which has been in the area for over 40 years. The entire crew of six was Mexican, spoke very little English, and came from the same village in Mexico. Companies are being forced to hire illegals or face the prospect of being uncompetitive. I have lived on and off in this area since 1979. Based on personal observation and experience, I have no doubt that we are being invaded by an army of illegal aliens and no one has a handle on the numbers.
All of them!
HERE HERE!!
I believe the current estimate is between 25 and thirty percent of Mexican nationals are presently in the US so a darn big part of the 30 million are Mexican. If you go visit a social services outlet in your community chances are it is chock full of Mexican aliens. I live in a very diverse area of Georgia (Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Mexican) By far the majority of illegal alien children in school and illegal alien social services recipients are Mexican. A family member teaches special ed. 25% of her charges, which thanks to no child left behind, cost about $150,000 per student year to babysit are Mexican illegal aliens.
I don't disagree, but wanted to make the point they are from everywhere.
This is a gleaming example of the Bush administration:
""Only 6 percent of 289 suspected immigrant smugglers were prosecuted by the federal government for that offense in the year ending in September 2004, according to the report. Some were instead prosecuted for another crime. Other cases were declined by federal prosecutors, or the suspect was released by the Border Patrol. ""
