French are rudest, most boring people on earth: British poll

Sat May 20, 3:17 AM ET

LONDON (AFP) - The French have been voted the world's most unfriendly nation by a landslide in a new British poll published. They were also voted the most boring and most ungenerous.

A decisive 46 percent of the 6,000 people surveyed by travellers' website Where Are You Now (WAYN) said the French were the most unfriendly nation people on the planet, British newspapers reported.

The Germans have no to reason to celebrate the damning verdict. They came second on all three counts.

WAYN's French founder, Jerome Touze, told the papers he had been stunned by the thumping condemnation of his compatriots and sought to blame it on Gallic love-struck sulking.

"I had no idea that the French would emerge as such an unfriendly country," he said.

"I think our romantic 'moodiness' is misunderstood and I will be sure to pass on the message to my family and friends back in France to be a bit more cheerful to tourists in the future."

Italy was voted the world's most cultured nation with the best cuisine, while the United States was named the most unstylish with the worst food.

The British did not feature in the top 10 of any of the categories.

"The British fit in nowhere -- good or bad. It appears that we are so completely average that the voters did not include us in any category," the tabloid Daily Express commented.

"And to our shame, four percent of respondents -- all British of course -- said they would only talk to other Britons when they are abroad."

This unwillingness to talk to the locals appears to go hand in hand with respondents' perceptions of foreigners.

While most said Spain was the foreign country where they would most like to live, they said the Spaniards were nearly as unfriendly and ungenerous as the French.

To add insult to injury, British newspaper The Daily Telegraph put the boot in on Saturday by saying in an editorial that the French stank.

"The French may like to think that Chanel No 5 is their scent but we all know that garlic and stale Gitanes are much more representative."

The French also have the worst b.o. To be fair, in any country and any place, even in America, you may encounter a person who hasn't bathed nor washed their clothes in a long, long time. In most countries these people are rare, or members of some weird religion or moslem. In France, such persons are the rule; the women stink the worst.

Too, France is plagued by pickle thieves. This is simple fact, not prejudice. At restaurants and such places you will see a bottle in the center of the table. It's contents will invariably prove to be pickle juice. It is a great mystery what happened to the pickles. An alternative theory for those bottles is that very many artisans of art-glass, and the contents of those bottles are used to etch glass.

Dogs are allowed inside eating establishments, but do not be alarmed; dogs are too smart to eat the food.

True. They make up for the lack of good food with the presence of good beer.

I don't get the "bad Food" since so much "Amercian Food" are mixtures and remixes of immigrant foods from around the world.

What do most people around the world think defines American food? McDonald's. If that was what I judged a country's food by, I would rank it at the bottom too.

As far as "stylish"... meh... I'm PROUD to not be a metrosexual baffoon who follows the style of the week, the flavor of the day.

Ditto. Somehow I don't immediately obey when some fashion designer from Milan, Paris or New York or his boyfriend decide that cuffs are stylish and I must immediately throw out all my pants without cuffs.

Talk to almost any American who has spent significant time in France. They almost all have a horror story.

What the Brit respondents apparently don't know is that the in the US we have the best along with the worst.

Ummm, what else were they going to say? How long have the French and British been at each other's throats off and on? This poll has nothing to do with the French and more with the historical disdain in Great Britain for France. I imagine if you did the same poll in _____(fill in the blank), the poll would return the nation who is considered a historical adversary. The same could be said if you broke the UK down by regions and that to the poll. I'd bet money opposing regions would show up in the poll as well.

Basic meat and potatoes dishes, English breakfasts et al, typical as American food, are directly related to British fare.

Yes, these very cosmopolitan and informed Brits assume we eat only at McDonalds and other fast food outlets. Of course they do too.
