It appears that wattage, gas economy and noise levels are all important factors.

Anyone have any specific Manufacturers/makes/models that they'd recommend?

No. Electricity only. Why?

Because that is the best route to take!
Get a generator supplied from your natural gas line, eliminates all the negatives with gasoline generators with limited gasoline tank capacity, about 12-hours running time and only able to supply electricity for fridge, and a few other necessities!!
Just thinking last year where we had to scramble to get gasoline because gas stations also out of power and could not pump gas!??! We were out of power for two weeks+ last year.
The natural gas solution is a relatively expensive way, $2,000 - $6,000 but it is automatic. When powers go out it kicks in automatically with a steady stream of natural gas available all the time and enough power to run a/c, washer/drier and much more!!!

I linked you to the one I bought. The reason I like it better than the larger generators is because of the increased fuel efficiency. 12 to 14 hours on 4 gallons. Lowe's for $500.

What's the noise level like on that Troybilt? I'd want to go for the 5500 watt model, but if Troybilt is good then I'm in luck because the local Lowe's has 'em on sale right now.

Natural gas does sound like a great way to go, albeit a bit of cash. I'll have to check on the availability of a gas line in my area.

Screw the noise level. That won't matter much with the temp at 96 degrees in the shade. Buy highest wattage period. Sam's will probably save you a few hundred. We stole a 6500 diesel there in 2004 after Charlie hit. Good luck!

It's pretty quiet, not as quiet as the Honda but pretty quiet.

Today's Tampa Tribune quoted a lady who bought a generator but it was very noisy. Further, it was stated that power companies may take longer because some generators somehow, I don't recall now cuz I'm no electrian, but apparently generators can cause electrical shock and other problems when the power companies try to bring a neighborhood back on line. www.tbo.com
