Mayor Ray Nagin, ridiculed nationally and derided some locally following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, has been re-elected to office in a fairly tight race against Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu.
Nagin took over 80 percent of the African-American vote and just over 20 percent of the white vote in defeating Landrieu. The totals are in contrast to four years ago when Nagin got 84 percent of the white vote in his race against Richard Pennington.
Nagin received national attention as the mayor of a devastated city, especially with calls for the federal government to "get off their ass" and help the city in the first few days after the storm.
He also was roundly criticized for his Martin Luther King Day speech in which he declared New Orleans would be a "chocolate city" again.
Landrieu and Nagin both readily admitted that there wasn't much difference in their ideas, but Landrieu empahsized a difference in leadership, while Nagin emphasized not changing leaders in midstream.
Stupidest
voters
anywhere
in
America.
And we will continue throwing money down that rat hole.
Then the fools in/from New Orleans deserve exactly what they get.
May all three of the predicted major hurricanes come through New Orleans again and leave everything else alone. That should eliminate any urge to rebuild that foolish city.
Our very own banana republic, right here in America.
Words fail me.
Two possible outcomes: Bad and worse. This is the latter.
Wouldn't Willy Wonka be the most qualified to run the Chocolate City. Oh wait, he is white, never mind.
There's no way New Orleans could have won, anyway.
Truly I hope that this is the reporter's own phrasing, not the Mayor-elect's.
lol
Are you kidding? There is no way i would want Landrieu as my mayor.
close second to DC and Philadelphia
A mentally retarded turkey has more sense than the voters of New Orleans.
At least they know how to punch a card, unlike in Florida.
It is scary that so many dumb people exist , and even scarier that they exist in one city. Oh, I forgot about Detroit, WAshington, etc
What do you base your comment on? Would you rather have Landrieu with sister Mary controlling all the money that will be coming into New Orleans? This family is now dead in this state. You should rejoice.
Where's that picture of the guy carrying a case of beer through the water? I'd think SchoolBusNagin is one leader - cough, cough - the voters would be delighted to change midstream.
New Orleans deserve whatever it gets
The only consolation here is that every time I flush, it is headed their way...
I don't know - once ya get past bad, it's all relative.
The "Big Sleazy" is all yours, Ray. You keep it, but I will avoid it. Have fun.
this was the best possible outcome.
Oh yeah, have you seen the New Orleans Ballots?
Does anyone have a link to what is happening in New Orleans regarding the land that is unusable to rebuild on? I am trying to sepak with an avowed liberal about how the people have a right to rebuild, but having no luck.
For national politics, this is the best possible outcome. At least the Landrieu legacy is dead. Nagin won't pursue higher office.
Oh, they can forgive Nagin, who was right there, for letting folks drown... Ask how many would reelect the prez if they had a chance. Well, Mitch wouldn't want the bloggers to have access to all the scandals of he and sister dear... would he?
Are you baseing your judgement of Nagin only on his handling of the Katrina crisis. Well I base his ability on the things he has done for this city before Katrina. I would have preferred Ron Kohig. But I don't think a republican could have won. So we had a runoff. Believe me, no way I vote for a landrieu. One more thing, handling a hurricane has to be every mayors nightmare. To make the decision to evacuate has tremendous pressure. You're damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Nah, at least he was resourceful... I bet he cut out of town and found a hustle in another state. Nagin wasn't resourceful... except when it came to getting his family out.
I just found a dead turkey on my property, it smelled really awful!
My handsome Hubby, being the Manly man that he is, with the help of my neighbor, (a man with no feelings at all)..picked it up and it's now "gone".
The stupid turkey drowned in my backyard. Due to the recent floods here in N.E.. The kids were playing catch in the backyard and were momentarily distracted by the event..
Mom... what is that thing?
I told them all to play on... it was just another liberal gone over.. my son thought that was hilarious.. his friends just kept playing .
We keep trying.. humor helps
It is a hell hole anyway. Better to have the known than the unknown win I guess.
Husband trained at Fort Polk, vowed he would never go to Louisiana ever again. We never have and its been 30 years!
More concerned about the money flow from the Feds. Hope we have watchdogs on that money.
LOL
They own it. If they get wiped out again and people are left behind I'm not going to feel sorry for them nor donate.
He should've been at Biloxi and Pascagoula... he would have thought Ft. Polk was a european vacation.
Probsbly the same watchdogs that are overseeing the halliburton money in Iraq.
who is "they"?
we all own new orleans - every federal taxpayer, to the tune of a 1/4 trillion dollars.
Kinda proves the point about a lot of people from New Orleans being idiots...
Did the racist take 100% of the fraudulent vote?
The amount of money that will be stolen by his administration during the rebuilding process is going to be unbelievable.
A few days ago I would have agreed with you. But, I can't stand the Landrieu family. As least with Nagin he tells you what he's thinking; as stupid as it might be. Landrieu, just like his sister, Senator Mary Landrieu, is just an extreme, left-wing, two-faced,liberal who pats you on the back while pissing on your foot.
We already know that the city is sinking, but its geological sinking is not nearly as severe as its moral decline.
I will never go back.
Ever notice that the rest of the gulf coast isn't one big pitty party. Biloxi, Gulfport, and nearly everywhere else is moving on and rebuilding. But all I keep hearing is poor New Orleans...my wife was in Biloxi at Keesler AFB, the people in that town were already rebuilding when she was moved.
More and more of our funds are being pumped into that place...only so they can "rebuild" it in the exactly as it was...13 feet underwater. And thats not counting all the funds that are used to grease the wheels...as the saying goes.
People reap what they sow...same for NO.
This is exactly what I expected. Frankly, many areas of the country (especially cities) are run and dominated by patholocially stupid, sub literate social tapeworms whose only interest is race and government handouts. In some places it whites, in others its blacks. But they all share the same agenda and the same problem.
You'd think after a century of public 'education' we could do better than this.
Good bye, New Orleans.
"Our very own banana republic, right here in America."
Don't forget; the voters in D.C. return Marion Barry to office after being caught on tape in a motel smoking with a crack whore. Detroit keeps electing idiots. When you've got cities (?) that are 70% ghetto, what do you think they're gonna do?
You are so right on!
