LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- "The Da Vinci Code" banked an estimated $29 million at the box office on its first day in theaters, an industry official said Saturday, positioning the film to turn in the strongest opening weekend for any movie this year.

With so many people having read the book, a huge opening was inevitable. The question remains as to whether this movie will have any legs. Hopefully the length will disuade some people.
I found the book to be a pretty hard slog.

Why the church assisted in marketing this film I will never know.
Ha, there's many a religious leader who welcomed the book. It brought more discussion of the Bible and lessons were taught on this.
The reviews have been pretty bad for the film. I dont think it will have "legs". I plan on seeing it eventually, probably will borrow the DVD from my sister or something.
Oh puh_leez, whereas the story is fiction, the underlying conspiracy theories and the slander of Christ and the Catholic Church is being put out as factual. Brown is very clear he believes the conspiracy theories.
I know it's fiction, you know it's fiction but it's clearly an attempt by Hollywood to destablize the belief of millions in the Catholic Church.
Typical, Hollywood, anti-Christian propaganda.

My son saw the movie last night. Said it was "long and boring."
So I guess you see nothing wrong with a movie that goes out of its way to blasphemize Jesus Christ.
Well if this was about Mohammed being married to an 8 year-old girl and the movie suggested old Mohammed was a bit too interested in children.
We'd see rioting in Italy, France, England -- all Muslim capitals. It seems us evil christians are not taking this movie too seriouly.
I cant get in an uproar over this movie. I am a believer although not a churchgoer.
Is is amazing to see people wasting their time and money going to see a film that tries to destroy their faith.
I wont be watching it. Ya know you read the Bible and back in the old testament they had Fire and Brimstone. They had plagues, they had burning bushes. They had all sorts of goodies.
Wouldnt it be great to see lightning hit about ten theaters and destroy them during the showing of this film? Sure would boost a lot of peoples faith. Make the Islamics think twice about Allah too.
Hey, I bought a replica of the codex at the film's premier and entered the letters: M-O-N-A L-I-S-A into the disks and I slid out the container. In the container was a piece of paper with a telephone number on it.
I immediately dialed the number and a casual feminine voice asked me my adddress and name. I told her. Ten minutes later, look who showed up, with a soft knock on my door! Needless to say, I invited this being in immediately.

If the 78 mill gross for first weekend is accurate than it doesnt need to have much in the way of legs, it has already walked a great deal down the road to commercial success.
I am thinking they probably have to have about $400 million gross to pay for the film. It might reach that mark, but this really needs to be a huge blockbuster if it is going to pay for all their other flops.
Well, let's just lay it on the line, it provides a great opportunity to witness Christ.
You should see all the "TALKS" at churches and various place about the FACTS of the book/movie.
This may be a case of what man meant for evil, God meant for good.

Historically, declaration of "Boycotts" by religious or political leaders have only resulted in higher tickets sales. Someday they will wake up an find they are being used by Hollywood, not attacked. Here we are talking about the film now. I don't see nearly as many posts about the Posiden movie...
This is nothing new...The Church did wonders for Jane Russell's film career. The political right (including FR) did wonders for Michael Moore's career. I could name and endless list of films and books that were put on the map by the Church or some political groups.
When you react emotionally and try to silence such a film, it almost always backfires, because it makes people curious.
Instead, being prepared for a reasonable dicussion and deabate on the subject is all that is required. Facts help. Drama doesn't.
I saw it Friday, and I enjoyed it. I don't understand all the hysteria. This should have no more impact on someone's faith than ET.
