'Today' Touts Pick of Murtha & Mora as 'Profiles in Courage'
Today Show/NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty." JFK Inaugural Address, 1961

"We can do just as much by withdrawing our troops." John Murtha, Winner, Profile in Courage Award, on Today Show, 5/22/06

The Kennedys have come a long way since JFK gave his inaugural speech. Pres. Kennedy was a cold warrior, not only in the words of that speech, but in action. He stared down the Kremlin over the Soviets' installation of nuclear missiles in Cuba, and with his Cuban embargo took the world the closest it has ever been to the brink of nuclear war.

Forty-some years later, his daughter honors, in JFK's name, a man calling for America to cut and run from Iraq, leaving that country to dissolve into anarchy and chaos that could threaten not just the region but the entire world. So much for bearing any burden, supporting any friend, opposing any fore to assure the survival and success of liberty.

This year's other Proile in Courage is Alberto Mora, former general counsel of the Department of the Navy, who, according to the JFK Library web site, "waged a campaign inside the Bush administration" against "cruel and abusive practices of United States military interrogators at Guantanamo [that] were the result of significant policy shifts at the highest levels of the U.S. government."

And there to publicize these profiles on this morning's Today show was Katie Couric.

Now, if there's one thing that takes absolutely no courage, it is for a Democrat to criticize President Bush's handling of the Iraq war. In interviewing Murtha in a segment devoted to highlighting this year's Profiles in Courage Award Winners, Katie really had to dig deep to find an example of any price Murtha paid.

Katie: "You did take a lot of grief from the Bush administration for making this speech, Republicans in Congress for making this speech. Some people even suggested you didn't deserve the two Purple Hearts and Bronze star you were awarded during the Vietnam War. How difficult was it for you personally in the aftermath of standing up and speaking your mind, how difficult was it to deal with the criticism?"

Oh, please. The relatively obscure Murtha overnight became a hero of the left, instantly lionized like he'd never been before. If 'Caroline,' as Couric repeatedly referred to her friend, was looking for real profiles in courage, she could have chosen from the many Iraqis who risked, and often sacrificed, their lives by accepting positions as judges, political leaders, etc. Or someone like Pres. Hamad Karzai of Afghanistan, whose life is in constant danger as he works to give his country a shot at modernity and democracy. And if the Kennedys are siincerely concerned about inhumane prison conditions, they could have looked to the other parts of Cuba, where truly brave and heroic pro-democracy dissidents languish in Castro's cruel jails.

Instead, Caroline Kennedy has transformed her father's legacy into little more than a vehicle for taking partisan shots at a Republican administration, confident that Couric & Co. will be there to accord it respectful treatment.

A profile in courage award for a cut and run strategy. Shameful. An award to a congressman who only recently said our marines murder iraqi civilians "in cold blood". Yup, thats the ticket -- Carolyn Kennedy continues to destroy any integrity that may remain of this award.

The only thing missing from his bloated side is Edgar Bergen.

Murtha should be getting the Ted Kennedy award for Cowardice.

He won in terms of getting those missiles out, but it was a loss because he promised the US would never invade, thus allowing a communist satellite nation 90 miles from our shores. Which reminds me, how legally binding is that promise of JFK's?

Some day in the not so distant future my grandchildren as yet unborn will ask me why we don't have the balls to attack those Islamic terrorists killing our fellow Americans on our very streets.

I'll look at them and say The democrats didn't want us to lose the war so they brought it back home to us.

They ask me why we aren't fighting them now, and I'll say because now they are our citizens and registered Democrats.

They'll ask men why,and I'll just groan and say because of a bunch of traitors.

and they'll ask me "what is a traitor?" ....

You know, Katie is heading for a fall at CBSD, though a very, very well-paid one. Scieffer's done well, the CBS news is actually ahead now of ABC..so when she takes over, her ratings spike won't be as pronounced..and when it collapses to below pre-Scieffer numbers, well...

BTW..FYI..this weekend's NY POST TV section had a blurb that her last week on Today, besides being a trubute to her..will also get some good digs in...they're gonna show a lot of tape of some of the more ridiculous, even stupid things she's done obver the years..

Isn't she gone yet?

This is reminding me of the opening of the second act of Pirates of Penzance.

The policemen sing about going off to do battle with the pirates, but never actually go.

The major general repeats, "Go, go, please go!."

By the way.....how do we know the missiles ever came out? All we did was take the word of some Russians that the tarp covered objects on the ships were not only missiles but all of the missiles. JFK did not "Trust but verify".

JFK lost.... Supposedly the Soviets removed theri missiles, but we also agreed to remove our missiles from Turkey.

If JFK had simply supported the Bay of Pigs invasion, this situation would probably never have come up.

He stared down the Kremlin over the Soviets' installation of nuclear missiles in Cuba, and with his Cuban embargo took the world the closest it has ever been to the brink of nuclear war.

Statements like this have always given me a case of gas. JFK's incompetence allowed Kruchev to place those missiles in Cuba in the first place. His failure to remove the Jupiter missiles as promised in Turkey, his intelligence failure to learn of the intent to install missiles in Cuba or spotting them in transit and then to top it all off, he committed the United States to a policy of never ever removing a dictator in our sphere of influence. President Monroe would be ashamed of President Kennedy.

Come to think of it, Kennedy had much less intelligence proving missiles in Cuba than did President Bush on Iraq. All he really had were photos of flatbed trucks with tarps covering long tubes. Hell, the left today would have called these things dual use items... grain silos and or missiles.

It's so rottenly sad how the communist liberal lefties are destroying this great nation. Sorry folks, but the damn mediaHARLOTS still carry much much power with the sheeple and world. In 5yrs they have accomplishment what they had aimed for since W won the presidency. To destroy this man in the eyes of the public and the world. I've got to admit that some of it is his own doing, but constant personal attacks on him have finally taken it's toll! Where is our party in all of this? Probably hiding under a bed shaking somewhere and hoping to keep their nasty little wimpy power by getting the ILLEGAL alien votes in up coming elections and the HECK with W, their constituents and the party...SICKENING!!

My memory may be a little shaky but I think JFK ask for the ships' captains word for having them but never verified that they were indeed missiles or if they were all of them. I heard from another source just a few months later that there were still some sites that were ready to go.
