Senate bill protects employers of illegal aliens from penalties
The Washington Times ^ | May 22, 2006 | Charles Hurt

Among those who will be cleared of past crimes under the Senate's proposed immigration-reform bill would be the businesses that have employed the estimated 10 million illegal aliens eligible for citizenship and that provided the very "magnet" that drew them here in the first place.

Buried in the more than 600 pages of legislation is a section titled "Employer Protections," which states: "Employers of aliens applying for adjustment of status under this section shall not be subject to civil and criminal tax liability relating directly to the employment of such alien."

Supporters of the legislation insist that such provisions do not amount to "amnesty." "The legislation we are considering today is not amnesty," Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter said last week. "That is a pejorative term, really a smear term used to denigrate the efforts at comprehensive immigration reform. This is not amnesty because amnesty means a pardon of those who have broken the law."

--SNIP-- Sen. Robert C. Byrd, West Virginia Democrat, vehemently opposes "this effort to waive the rules for lawbreakers and to legalize the unlawful actions of undocumented workers and the businesses that illegally employ them." Amnesties, he said, "are the dark underbelly of our immigration process."

"They tarnish the magnanimous promise enshrined on the base of the Statue of Liberty," Mr. Byrd said last week on the Senate floor. "Amnesties undermine that great egalitarian and American principle that the law should apply equally and should apply fairly to everyone."

While most of the focus thus far has been on the "amnesty" granted to illegal aliens, opponents only now are discovering the broad range of crimes that will be forgiven under the legislation.

Byrd seems to have a clearer view of the amnesty issue than does Specter

One thing is very clear, and that is many of our senators have sold their souls.

How much more than seeing Byrd, Schumer Bill Clinton and Joe Klein from the Times agree with him does President Bush need to realize that he is ASS BACKWARD on this?

Everyone who he is opposed to politically agrees with him and the ones who voted for him disagree with him! Shouldn't that tell him he is on the wrong path? What the heck is he thinking?

Ah heck...
Well, I guess if the ILLEGALS were "invisible" (as their spokespersons
always say)...then I guess their relation with their employers was too.

Yes, far too many of our senators have sold out. With our military might and technology, we end up being invaded by hordes of peasants who have no respect for our laws and demand (and receive) special perks.

Specter's actions demonstrate that he is against the best interests of this country.

"This is not amnesty because amnesty means a pardon of those who have broken the law." "

I swear (not really but I know all the words), Sphincter must have his head up his sphincter. An employer breaks the law by employing a crimmigrant but letting the employer off is not a pardon or amnesty? That is more convoluted than the meaning of "Is is" or no "controlling legal authority". It has to be fluoride in the water. What else could have contributed to such an inside out, upside down, right is wrong, black is white (no white is bad I guess)government that we have today?

Our political class is giving illegals a free ride. Americans would never get one from their own government. They truly have no shame in Washington.

""Employers of aliens applying for adjustment of status under this section shall not be subject to civil and criminal tax liability relating directly to the employment of such alien." "

So why the devil should we obey the law? Our govt. doesn't.
