"Anyone who thinks there should be no standards on what is recommended to teens to be read is a boob, sorry."
I can agree with that. Can you agree, in return, that the people setting those standards should actually READ the books?
Sure they should. I never even said this lady was correct. She probably was on some and incorrect on others.
My participation on this thread had to do with the false cries of censorship.
BTW, if you mean she someone has to read the entire book to make a judgment on whether or not they think it's appropriate to recommend to teens, I disagree.

That's exactly what I mean. If they don't have that much energy or intellectual curiosity, they have no business doing it at all. A whole, entire book! When did that become a superhuman effort?
You should have asked why I would bother to read them, that would have been your first intelligent question. I'm not sure of the answer, though. Maybe just curiosity with the bizarre thinking patterns.
When I read 10 trashy, useless, intellectually worthless pages in a moronic tome, I have all the information I need to make a recommendation to someone. You don't?
A whole, entire book! When did that become a superhuman effort?
You have finished every book you ever started?
No. I have a fifty page rule on books. If you don't like it by the end of the first fifty pages, you might as well cut your losses.
However, that's my rule for my own reading. If it were my JOB to recommend books for school reading lists, I would want to make sure I actually knew what I was recommending, and why.
But hey, that's just me, apparently.
They're getting mine over my dead body.
And at that time, you might be qualified to tell someone whether or not you recommend it?
If it were my JOB to recommend books for school reading lists, I would want to make sure I actually knew what I was recommending, and why.
So you throw out your rule and read every word to determine if you recommend it? I find that preposterous.
But hey, that's just me, apparently.
Apparently.
I was differentiating between making my own decision, or casually telling a friend whether I liked a book, versus actually making POLICY for what schools would have on the curriculum.
I think that for that job, the person making a recommendation should know thoroughly what they are talking about, since it will affect a lot of people in a formal curriculum.
But your preference for ignorance has been so stoutly defended, that I will withdraw my point; ignorance once again wins the day.
Flame wars with imbeciles bore me. Carry on.
Obviously you've abandoned any pretense of defending Ms. Pinney. Wise move.
I figured there wouldn't be much of an answer to that.
Seriously, read what you wish when you wish, as much of it as you wish (I should probably add, IF you wish). I doubt you'll be setting curriculum in any case. ;)
Don't be so sure. ;)
It has to be rather difficult when you don't even know what it is you're defending. As far as I can tell, the only criteria employed here was "icky!", and that doesn't lend itself particularly well to a rational defense ;)
Hence, none was employed. :)
I never defended her. I merely showed you up for your dim witted posts.
Now prove what a twit you truly are by making up yet another lie to tell on the last post of this nonsensical exchange. Have at it, make it a whopper like all the rest.
Not that you're going to bother supporting that accusation, obviously.
Does this usually work for you, where you toss out some bizarre claim about someone else, and then hope that nobody actually goes back to check the record to see how accurate it is? Me, I'll let that same record speak for itself - anyone who's interested can simply skim back through this thread to see if there's any meat on them bones. For your sake, you should hope nobody does.
