The Junkers (wealthy industrialists) were instrumental in Hitler's rise to power. The big concerns like Krupp, et al couldn't give a fig about Nazi political beliefs - they just knew it was good for business. At the end of the war, the execs were neither convicted of war crimes, nor were the industrial concerns broken-up.

Actually, the Junkers weren't industrialists, but large landowners in central and eastern Germany. After the war, most, if not all, of their lands wound up behind the Iron Curtain, so they were totally dispossessed. As for the Krupps, Gustav Krupp von Bohlen was tried but acquitted, but his son was convicted at Nuremberg and did some jail time.

I believe he and Congress want to do what is best in terms of US interest but it just does not play very well with people who have become upset by the current levels of immigration abuse.

What the President and the Senate are proposing is not playing well with many people because people who really understand the issues know that what they are proposing will not work.

Before any plan to deal with illegals in this country will work, the border must be secure. Any plan must recognize that in order to work, more illegals cannot be streaming across the border as they are now. A successful plan must also recognize that there are many illegals here now who will have to be deported, because they either will not participate in a worker plan or they will not qualify due to background checks or other requirements.

Any successful plan must be able to deport those who need deported and the fact is without the border secured those deported will simply return within hours or days as they do now. We also must be able to keep new illegals from coming in. Illegals are pouring in right now in greater numbers, simply because of the current discussion of a guest worker and possible citizenship plan.

The President and the Senate seem to be emphasizing all the ways to deal with illegals already here, instead of emphasizing securing the border which has to be the first step in a successful plan.

The other issue at least for me is with all the concessions they are proposing for illegals it seems to be a plan to reward people for illegal behavior. To law abiding citizens that is impossible to understand. Every day another concession is given to illegals; It reminds me of the old TV show "Queen for a Day" where the winner would receive the major prizes and then they would announce an endless supply of gifts. I feel like illegals are winning the lottery, and they are being paid out of my pocket. The proposal of the Senate seems to be all carrots and no sticks, and when we are discussing people who have violated laws, that makes me angry.

President Bush also needs to understand that many Americans do very hard, dirty work of every sort every day. He seems to be convinced that Americans are lazy or too good to do certain jobs. When he says "jobs Americans won't do" what does he think he is saying to the Americans who have or are now doing those very jobs? Is he saying illegals should have their job? Is he saying illegals would do thier job better? There may be a shortage of workers, especially in seasonal and temporary work, and if that is the case then that is the case he should make. He should not insult Americans by saying they won't do certain jobs.

President Bush and many others need to be honest about the illegals; they are not all decent, hard working people who only seek a better life- of course some are just that. Some are hard core criminals who come here in order to commit crimes. Some illegals come here to take advantage of our social services. Honesty requires people to admit to that truth, and the plan must have a way to sort out the different types of illegals. I have a great fear that we will not be gutty enough as a country to get rid of the bad apples and will be expected to welcome a new class of criminals and welfare cheats along with some new hard workers.

This is a though issue and we need leadership that won't sugar coat the issues and will be straight about the problems as well as possible solutions. We need leaders that we feel are for what is truly best for America and it's legal citizens.

Although I might disagree with some of the points you made I do appreciate the clarity, courtesy and force of your words. It is a complex issue and there are no simple answers to the immigration issues. Clearly the President has a problem if he is unable to effectively respond to some the hard questions you raise.

Nails it, too. The sad fact, I believe, is that they all sugar coat because we are too close to an election. And, with that, comes a lack of conviction.

I also wanna say that the beginning of this whole thread talked about Mark Belling being a dufus. I must agree as well, and posted a blog article on my blog about this very situation and how Belling is the perfect example of a lack of conviction in actions that will best protect this country.

I also hark back to a man that destroyed another great nation while wielding a dangerous weapon known as appeasement. That man is Neville Chamberlain and the country was the United Kingdom. From his lack of conviction and wont to appease we all know what came next ...

So it's alright if the local nuclear power plant decides to bury radioactive waste in your yard and circumvent disposal regulations? After all, they're only breaking the law so they can compete.

That is putting it extremely mildly...and a very limited statement of the reasons to be against illegal immigration.

Now that is where the real point of conflict becomes apparent. The business and investment lobby want them to stay. They want them to work. I think that is the fundamental point of disagreement and people are avoiding talking directly about this aspect of the story. It seems to me the President has been very direct and honest in his thinking. He is promoting what he has advocated for more than ten years. Now people are hammering him for being faithful to his beliefs.

Don't make this out to be more than it is. All that is going on is a simply matter of Congress and the President ignoring border security and allowing tens of thousands a month to enter our country.

So you agree with his support of the budget-busting, hundreds of billions of dollars give away to the elderly in the guise of the "Medicare Prescription Drug Plan". How about his disastrous Education Bill that Teddy Kennedy helped write and squire through Congress. I could go on and on, but I want to know if you support these ultra-destructive boondoggles as you claim to do.
