Sodium cyanide is used to extract gold and other precious metals from ore, and so metal mining operations consume most of the sodium cyanide production;

By itself NaCN is used for gold mining alhough there is not such a thing in Iraq, i.e. gold mining. NaCN with HCL or H2SO4 will produce the Chemical Weapon HCN or Zyklon B.

By the same token, the cyanide radical complexes with the heavy metals and is often used in electroplating of the metal, particularly gold. It is (or was) common in printed-circuit manufacturing processes.
