- In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption...
"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage.
And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.

Oh, that will go over well in the West and South. I'm sure no one will remind people of the Carter years with this idea of hers.

She can whip out several studies that prove her statemant while others can produce just as many that show she's wrong.
If I wasn't against it before, I sure would be now thanks to her.

I sure miss West Texas, sometimes I dream of those summer days in Chillicothe or Vernon at my grandparents, the street so hot you couldn't even walk to the swimming pool.

Hello,
One of my earliest memories is driving with my Grandfather in his car, one that would sound a loud buzzer when he went over 55 MPH. He hated that car (I don't think he kept it long). He would yell at the top of his lungs to SHUT UP!

Speaking of which, does anyone remember when Hillary held an AA flight on the ground for 40 mins while she was giving a speech? Boarded up and fueled, the frigging thing sat on the gate waiting for her heinous to arrive. When she got there, she blamed it on the TSA..

One foot on the brake and one on the gas!
Well, there's too much traffic, I can't pass!
So I tried my best illegal move
A big black and white come and crushed my groove!
Go on & write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license n' all that jive
I can't drive 55!
So I signed my name on number 24!
Yeah the judge said, "Boy, just one more
I'm gonna throw your @zz in the city joint"
Looked me in the eye, said, "You get my point?"
I said "Yeah!, Oh yea!"
Write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
I can't drive 55!
When I drive that slow, you know it's hard to steer.
And I can't get my car out of second gear.
What used to take two hours now takes all day.
Huh - It took me 16 hours to get to L.A.!
Go on & write me up for 125
Post my face, wanted dead or alive
Take my license n' all that jive
I can't drive 55!

Liberals have been screaming about this ever since the 55 limit was lifted back in '92 (or '94 maybe? I don't remember). The 55 limit was a joke to begin with .. almost nobody ever payed attention to it, not even the cops. An average of 65-70 on the Interstate's was always the norm around here, and still is (in NY at least, where the limit was raised to 65). The 'norm' is even higher in Western states, where 80+ is the average.
It's pointless, Hillary, to bring this outmoded debate to the table once again. It ain't gonna win her any political points with anybody except amongst the loony left fringe.
To: george76
Just think of all the revenue we'll get from speeding tickets! </sarcasm off>
To: george76
Hitlery wants 55, I want 110. Let's split the difference and add 10. 92.5 mph is fast enough for me on most roads.

We'll build fuzzbusters, radar detectors and stealth systems on our cars. Keep it at 55mph and we'll generate Klingon claoking systems to get past that.

Is anyone nostalgic for that vile law?
I'm ... amazed.
If she runs for President on this platform, she might carry New York.

To: george76
I've got an idea, Hillary. If driving a mere 55 actually does save gas, then why not just recommend that people do it on their own? If I can get from point A to point B on less gas by driving slower, then isn't the onus on me to drive slower because it's in my own best interests, and not on government to force me, under threat of fines, to drive slower?
While you're at it, how about outlawing throwing rice at weddings? It wastes rice! I could save money on rice by not throwing it at weddings, but since I'm too stupid to act in my own best interests, why not use the law to force me to do it?
LIBERALISM: The Democrats think you're stupid enough to need it!

It really makes no sense, most of her comments lately make no sense.
It makes sense to her constituents in New York City, where you can't legally drive more than 50 on the highways and parkways within the city, and need to drive way out of town in order to legally drive more than 55. Many New Yorkers have a myopic world view - if we can't drive fast because of traffic, it must mean that no one else is able to drive fast in the rest of the country.
Never mind that the local speed limits are already set artificially low in order to generate revenue for the state. Never mind that in a rational state like Texas, they are proposing to RAISE the speed limit in wide open West Texas to 80 because *gasp that's the speed people drive in the middle of nowhere *gasp* and it doesn't make sense to criminalize normal driving behavior.
