Arnold to veto bill nixing 'mom,' 'dad'

Breaking a policy of not commenting on pending bills, a spokesman for Arnold Schwarzenegger says the California governor will veto at least one of three controversial education measures related to sexual orientation.

The governor opposes a measure passed by the Senate and pending in the Assembly that would remove "sex-specific" terms such as "mom" and "dad" from textbooks and would require students to learn about the contributions homosexuals have made to society, the Sacramento Bee reported.

SB 1437 passed the Senate May 11 with a 22-15 vote.

"The governor believes that school curriculum should include all important historical figures, regardless of orientation," said Schwarzenegger's director of communications, Adam Mendelsohn, according to the Bee. "However, he does not support the Legislature micromanaging curriculum."

Democratic state Sen. Sheila Kuehl, the openly lesbian author of the measure Schwarzenegger plans to veto, expressed disbelief that the governor already has made up his mind on a bill that still hadn't been vetted by one house of the Legislature, the Sacramento paper said.

"He hasn't made up his mind, I don't care what some underling might have said," insisted Kuehl, who said she had not spoken with the governor yet about the bill.

Kuehl plans to initiate a conversation when the measure gets to the Assembly floor.

"For them to take a position on it, I think is precipitous," she said. "There's nothing controversial about it. The right wing has drummed up a lot of old fears. Once people understand what it really does, the response is usually OK."

Seth Kilbourn, political director for the homosexual-rights group Equality California, called the governor's indication of opposition "disappointing."

Kilbourn doesn't see any political benefit in the governor rejecting the bill, with June being "Gay Pride Month."

"This would not be the best time for him to be doing that if he wanted to appear more friendly," Kilbourn told the Sacramento paper. "He's passed more pieces of legislation benefiting the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered) community – except for gay marriage – than any other governor."

One thing to keep in mind in November:

Angelides and Westley would NOT veto these bills...

Even if Arnold is the GOP candidate in November, you have to hold your nose and vote for him or many, many, many bad laws (including Driver's Licenses for Illegal Aliens) will pass the state legislature and be signed by the Governor.

Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Henry Ford, Alexander Hamilton, Sir Isaac Newton, Stephan Hawkins, Ronald Reagan, ect. al. I don't care about what they preferred sexually, it's none of our business. I care about what they did, what they invented and how they impacted the world.

Unfortunately, the schools can't manage to teach the important stuff; but they can find funds and time to waste on the PC crap. Then we'll sit and wonder why India and China are delivering brighter students than we are. Intellectually speaking, America is now the border-line retard in the Global classroom. And we can thank policies like this for putting us there.

Scott Hamilton's straight. Married with kids. So are a lot of other male figure skaters.

I know it's hard to accept because so many of them dress and act in a way that would make Liberace look like Rock Hudson (heh), but that's the way life sometimes can be....

The fact that a majority of our lawmakers approve of this, and it hangs on the veto of one man, tells us that this battle is all but lost.

Half my grandkids are out of the public schools, and I'm working on getting the rest out. Why would anyone let their kids be educated by people with that much contempt for their values, its beyond me.

Of course. The comment about the divide between hockey players and

And yeah, at least one gay hockey player got some press (I think he

Looking back, I wish it had been figure skating.

Think about it. Hockey -- all guys -- the most fun after the game is snapping towels in the locker room. Figure skating -- at least 50 thin, fit girls for every guy. I don't know about after-skating activities; but, I'm pretty sure no snapping towels are involved.

That this even has to be said as an explanation of why proposed legislation will be vetoed, just shows how insane the California government has become. "RINO" or not, Arnold is Horatio at the Bridge on crazy stuff like this.

I've seen threads on this topic several times. I struck me as odd that anyone would attempt to legislate the words "mom" and "dad" out of existance, so I went and looked up the bill. I don't see that the bill would ban references to "mom" and "dad". Perhaps someone could explain.

Thanks

The text of the bill:

Are your grandchildren home schooled?

Actually, my daughter did try her hand briefly at homeschooling, when they were young. The experience was interesting, as she had other younger kids who insisted in joining in. But it was a big job for her, and she eventually gave it up, and started the kids in public school.

After a number of years of public school, we finally felt forced to get at least the older ones out, and we put them into one of the several church-sponsored schools in our area. Their price per month is quite modest, but with several kids, it still adds up to quite a lot. So, its tough.

But the kids have really blossomed since they've been there. I wondered if we were making a mistake, for all the usual reasons you will hear. You wonder if the curriculum will be as good, you wonder if its a good idea to "shelter" them.

Shortly before making the decision I became acquainted with a number of teenagers from one of the other church schools in the area, and I was surprised at how well-adjusted they seemed, happy, without much of the usual teenage baggage you expect in a teen. Good kids, very active, very engaged.

So we made the jump. And after a couple of years there, I can say the same thing about our kids now. They are like night and day from when they were over at the public school. Not a lot of the teen drama we think of as normal. None of our kids are einsteins, but they are learning much better, they don't have the kinds of distractions you find in the normal "west side story" school setting. And, importantly, the principles we hold dear are a given, they aren't mocked or undermined at every turn.

They are active in sports, fit, doing reasonably well academically, they relate easily with adults as well as with kids their own age. And they know how to pray.

I'm looking at my nephews and nieces, and the younger grandkids, and wishing I could do for them what we've done for these. You can see the difference.

"The governor believes that school curriculum should include all important historical figures, regardless of orientation,"

Wow! Common sense from the governor's office. I'm happily surprised.

"He hasn't made up his mind, I don't care what some underling might have said," insisted Kuehl, who said she had not spoken with the governor yet about the bill.

It ain't over 'til it's over? I hope she is wrong.

The right wing has drummed up a lot of old fears. Once people understand what it really does, the response is usually OK."

Wrong, Zelda. We read it and we're appalled. Please don't call the electorate ignorant. It's insulting (especially coming from a Rat!)

Seth Kilbourn, political director for the homosexual-rights group Equality California... doesn't see any political benefit in the governor rejecting the bill, with June being "Gay Pride Month." - "This would not be the best time for him to be doing that if he wanted to appear more friendly," Kilbourn told the Sacramento paper. "He's passed more pieces of legislation benefiting the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered) community – except for gay marriage – than any other governor."

Where was his common sense then? I hope he doesn't back down, but he has been unusually generous to the GLBTers. That "Civil Rights Act" he signed was atrocious.

you wonder if its a good idea to "shelter" them.

You know, I hear this argument quite often from Christians, and I don't quite understand it.

We have no qualms about sheltering our children from any number of harmful influences, yet somehow protecting them from the harmful influences of public school is wrong?

I have no intention of sending my children out into the world without equipping them for battle. I once heard a great quote from a homeschooling mom that sums it up for me:

"When my children have the faith of Daniel I'll send them into the lion's den."
