Saudis driving UAE efforts to buy U.S. ports, military factories
Congressional investigators have found evidence that Saudi Arabia was behind the takeover of major ports and defense facilities in the United States.
Congressional sources said investigators who have examined the United Arab Emirates purchase of companies that operate U.S. major ports and a key subcontractor to the American military suspect that Saudi investors helped arrange financing for the multi-billion-dollar deals. The sources said Saudi princes have sought to invest in critical infrastructure and defense in the United States.
"There is no smoking gun at this point," a congressional source familiar with the investigation said. "What we do know is that the UAE has no interest investing in anything but extremely safe investments and that Saudis have facilitated financing for the latest takeovers."
Over the last four months, state-owned UAE companies acquired two British companies that operate in the United States. Dubai Ports World bought the London-based P&O, which operates six major American ports while Dubai International Capital has bought the Doncasters Group, which owns nine defense factories in the United States.
The sources said members of the Saudi royal family appear to have used the UAE as a front for their entry into the U.S. defense and port industries. They said several leading UAE state-owned companies have been targeted by Saudi investors, flushed with huge petro-dollar revenues.

At this point, Congress is not expected to release ANY findings of what remains an informal inquiry.
The sources said congressional leaders appear SATISFIED with the Bush administration's guarantees from Dubai International not to transfer technology to the UAE and DP World's pledge not to operate major American ports.
"We'll never know if continuing down this path of selling of our national defense industries will end up hurting us in the long run," said Rep. John Barrow, a Georgia Democrat who represents a district that contains a key defense facility now owned by Dubai International.
"We all have to draw the line when it comes to selling our national defense establishment. We don't want to outsource our military industrial complex one piece at a time."
"The Saudis invest in strategic assets and have hired top U.S. consultants to advise them on where to invest."

Sheesh, what a stupid comment
Amazing the "Unnamed Sources" keep lying to you all over and over and over, yet you continue to believe every wacko Tin Foil Hat garbage pushed by these ignorant fools. Dubai Port World runs Terminals all over the world. P&O was selling, they are in that industry. NO wacko plots and deep dark evil Govt schemers. Just a simple everyday business deal that the Democrats jumped on as a was to prove "They were tough on National Defense" and a bunch of ignorant Know Nothings jumped on without bothering to even find out ONE fact.
The U.S. suffers from battered wife syndrome. It loves its saudi oil master despite getting continuously beaten by it.
and our public schools
Just another reason why we should balance our budget and develop an alternative to foreign oil.
Insight Mag...two steps below the National Enquirer...and one step below the NYT. I love they way they call themselves a "mag".

I didn't know. That's why I love FR, know you can always get the truth here.
To paraphrase, "It was the Saudis all along.."
How's this for a strategy? Invite them to invest, pick a fight with them, and then nationalize what they bought?
" flushed with huge petro-dollar revenues."
Which means bought with our own money.
Sadly, the US stands for nothing anymore, except the all-mighty DOLLAR!
...not sure if it was very diferent.
This congressional source probably believes there were no attacks by saudis on 911 too. Some of the people in DC are so stupid, and so stuck on stupid, I simply am left speechless.
Oh, I'm not surprised at all. Vicente Fox is doing a snake oil tour, and our elected officials are falling all over themselves to be first in line to kiss his @ss. Why would we care about the Saudis taking over strategic operations in our country, when our borders are being overrun by all sorts of miscreants?
Bah!!!!!
the sooner we get off the foreign oil addiction the better...
whether it be drilling more oil and/or developing alternative fuels but we need to "get er dun" and we need to "get er dun" NOW!
I think it was different until the late 70s early 80s. At some point, economics became everything. Nationalism and patriotism are viewed as "mean spirited" because you're essentially saying your better than someone else (can't do that). Capitalism is a "dead hand" and economics is a "neutral" science.
I used to be an unabashed fan of Captialism--it sure helped us win the Cold War. Unfortunatley, in the last 15 years, its being increasing used to dillute and destroy the American way of life. Examples: illegal immigration, promotion of the gay lifestyle, outsourcing of just about everything, and an unhealthy obsession with materialsm (don't have a kid--buy a Lexus instead. It will cost about the same, but at least you won't have to change its diaper). A lot of "experts" says we can't do anything about illegal immigration 'cause the illegals are just obeying the law of supply and demand and filling an economic vacuum. Its as if we've totally surrendered our good judgement to the dead hand of Capitalism.
I realize there are a lot of people that are OK with that, but I'm not one of 'em.
Bump.
Did ya know Los Angeles itself is an oil rich field?
A visit to La Brea Pits last week reminded me of that.
Are you surprised?

Oh! Okay.... Series?
Culver City has numerous working oil wells also; most folks have no idea.
