MONTGOMERY, Ala.--Most politicians would kill for--or spend millions of dollars to acquire--the name recognition Roy Moore has in Alabama. Not necessarily the kind of name recognition, mind you. Just the level.
That's because here, and across the country, he's known not just as Roy Moore, but as "Roy Moore, Ten Commandments Judge"--the Southern Baptist-cum-chief justice of Alabama who defied a federal court order to remove his 2 1/2-ton monument to the Commandments from the state courthouse, and lost his job as a result. It's a moniker that wins him automatic support in some quarters, and deafens ears before he even opens his mouth in others. And as he runs for the Republican nomination for governor in his native state, that notoriety is both a blessing and a curse.

Hmmmm, backbone, moral convictions and belief that the STATE has authority in decisions regarding where the 10 Commandments maybe displayed, and not some Federal judge who knows neither the town, county or city in which the display.
I've never heard his name; but based upon this one sample point (granted, you need more samples to form an informed opinion), I'm inclined to like the man.
bttt for Judge Roy Moore....Hope he wins!
Yeah, imagine that: someone running for the 'Pub nom' that sounds like an actual Conservative...will miracles never cease.
And the entire state of Alabama is on "Soul Patrol" euphoria.
Enlighten me: what do you mean by "Soul Patrol"?
"Putting himself above the law is exactly what Mr.Moore was accused of doing."He had the temerity to stand up for his beliefs, and in the process angered the liberal/socialist elite. If i were an Alabamian he'd have my vote based on that alone.
I think this guy is an Ego Maniac and I don't trust him. That whole thing with the Ten commandments Monument was a big ego media thing...and like it or not, there are other religions in this country.
I believe what is already there historically should be given a pass....but to now put in a distinctly Christian monument, no way. I want the government OUT of my religion.Period.
Taylor Hicks winning 'American Idol.' Alabama is the happiest state in the country and this is a plus for the incumbant.
He's trailing by 50 points in the polls so I think that he's probably toast.
Ah, an Idol reference--that would explain my complete ignorance...thank God ;)
Did you read the article and his take on other religions?
Yup. Toast. (I'm in Mobile)
It takes a while. Some people never recover.
Then you oppose the actions of the federal judge in the case who took it upon himself to completely ignore the wording of the First and Ninth Amendments to the Constitution of the United States of America, right?
Moore's opinion is that no religion other than Judaism or Christianity has any place in the U.S. But I believe it was Madison who asked the question, ""Who is it who cannot see that the same who would consecrate Christianity above all other religions would then have to consecrate a particular sect of Christians above all other sects?" By placing a monument to the 10 Commandments containing a version that differed from the version taught by Catholics and Jews that is exactly what Moore was doing.
Then you oppose the actions of the federal judge in the case who took it upon himself to completely ignore the wording of the First and Ninth Amendments to the Constitution of the United States of America, right?
Which might explain why I watch precisely zero TV--who needs it w/ the Internet, video games and *gasp!* books :)
Religious fundamentalism does not equate to political conservatism. As has been said in other venues in other ways, "I have met conservatism, and Moore is not it".
Speaking of the Court case encourages the view that he is a "one trick pony" without depth and wide qualification for the office.
Besides, supporters of his stand are "in the bag". It's the rest of the voters he wants.
Good luck to him.
That's all he is. Moore is a Protestant Christian who looks down his nose at every other religion and even other Christian denominations.
He's a demagogue, a la George Wallace, and deserves the whippin' he's going to get on June 6.
Then I guess everything he says in the actual article is a lie...
Judging from the story it looks like Moore would love to concentrate on other issues but that his 10 Commandment reputation preceeds him. And he's still trailing almost 3 to 1.
Enlighten me: what do you mean by "Soul Patrol"?
Wow!!! You do need to be enlightened. lol. He is Taylor Hicks from the number one family show in America "American Idol."
I have never watched one minute of Idol which is no small feet living in the belly of the beast (i.e. Hollywood, CA.)
And, yes, I'm proud of that ;)
He's a great man, but I am not sure the people of any state in the U.S. have the wisdom to select him.
It was apparent from the start that he had higher ambitions, hence disobeying the law with the ten commandment thing.
George Wallace is an apt comparison.
You enlightened me too. Never heard of him.
You mean this>
And Alabamians have always dared defend our rights, whether it be Martin Luther King, or what I did, or the beginning of the Civil War. We dare defend our rights."
What "rights" was Alabama defending at the beginning of the Civil War?
Or how about this quote:
"Every function of government is related" to the acknowledgment of God, he says.
How about this quote:
Tyrants are those who put [themselves] above the law of God and become all-powerful. They control everything--your life, your liberty, your pursuit of happiness. In this country, those things are given by God and government is there to secure them."
He seems not to understand a fundamental principle that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land, not the Bible.
"And as for the budget deficit, Mr. Moore believes that God is on the side of lower taxes and spending".
That is one of most absurd statements I have ever heard. The Almighty who created the universe and everything in it is on the side of lower taxes and spending? Of course it gets worse including his desire to see Christianity the sole religion.
No sir, I have seen conservatism, and Moore definitely is not it.
wow. that was such an intelligent and profound response.NOT.
I thought the same thing. He even has the same defiant anger.
"I think this guy is an Ego Maniac and I don't trust him."
Would you rather have an 'Ego Maniac' that stands firm and resolute on his convictions or the spineless GOP Senate Ego Maniacs who care only about re election and their cush jobs. Give me multiple clones of Roy Moore and stack the halls of govt. with his brand of man.
Is that you, Roseanne Barr circa 1980's?
Your original coment about "other religions" made no sense. I was addressing your hippy lack of logic and knowledge.
You are still a liberal (hippy) in your understanding of our nation. You still got the hippy brainwashing deep inside.
That's OK, just don't pretend to be recovering, or pretend not to be a liberal.
Roy Moore refused to obey the law; violated his oath of office; and didn't even have the deceny to resign on a matter of principle--he was removed from office in an 8-0 vote by the other Alabama Supreme Court justices.
Moore does not in any way represent true conservative values as any conservative I know understands them (respect for the law, even if you disagree with it, honoring your oath of office). It seems Alabama conservatives see through his charade of wrapping the shroud of Christian-ness around himself in a shameful, sanctimonious, display of piety, hypocrisy, and demagogy.
Not to mention his crude attempts to demonize his opponents as "anti-God; anti-American; and anti-Christian".
"I-am-the-chief-justice, I-am-the-law" Roy Moore richly deserves the defeat that is going to be handed to him by the voters.
Then God save us all.
My how he rubs you the wrong way. As for me, there are few men alive today that I respect more than Roy Moore.
Meanwhile, I'm trying to get my religion into my government!
You just proved my point again.
No logical discussion....just blah, blah about my name.
And...there ARE many religions in this country. Boy am I glad you aren't the Minister of Religion.
A lot of people in this country could say the same thing...all having different religions. I prefer to have no interference with my religion by the government.
I think you nailed it. Call Moore anything you want, just not "conservative".
As do most theocrats. Thank God for the Constitution.
Try to explain, one:
and like it or not, there are other religions in this country.
What does this statement have to do with the topic?
Two:
but to now put in a distinctly Christian monument
How is this a "distinctly Christian monument".
You have got to be kidding...those questions are so obvious.
By the way...insults only started when you went on a tirade about my name.
Yes, and thank God for the atheists who wrote it. < /s>
I actually went to Montgomery, Alabama and saw the monument. It is not distinctly Christian at all. It has a bunch of historical quotes on it along with the Ten Commandments. If you want to tie one relgion to it, you would have to blame Judaism. The point of the monument is simply to display the moral foundation for law. And guess what, Christians do not believe being moral makes you a Christian, though being immoral will likely be a sign you aren't one. If it were a Christian monument it would have John 3:16 and things like that on it.
Freedom thrives where the people willingly put moral restraints on themselves. Our Constitution was never supposed to be the enemy of religious expression, not even in the public square.
Yes. I am not surprised you are unable to answer. I was correct in my guess that you would not answer.
