Thomas L. Friedman is a member of the cadre of slick moralizers who make their living by commenting at a distance about the problems that real people face in their lives. He is employed by other people who care about the conditions of others as long as it doesn't mean they have to really interact to closely with those they spend all day expressing concern about.
Yet, how would he solve these problems himself? A broad reading of Friedman suggests his world is full of relative moral decisions, a world view that is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of millions in the last century alone.
I suspect Friedman has to slam the President somewhere or his columns won't get published. It's like paying protection money to work in "Pinch"'s territory.
