Lost in translation? (Iraqi Blog calls CNN on deliberate mistranslation)
IraqTheModel ^ | 5-27-06 | Omar

Posted on 05/28/2006 6:39:22 AM PDT by FreedomNeocon

Does the CNN have problems with translation from Arabic to English or is it a case of deliberate twisting of facts?

Yesterday Iraq's and Iran's foreign ministers had a joint press conference in Baghdad after which the CNN ran a headline that reads "Iraqi minister defends Iranian nuclear program" and wrote:

Iran has a right to develop nuclear technology and the international community should drop its demands that Tehran prove it's not trying to build a nuclear weapon, Iraq's foreign minister said Friday.

[…]

"Iran doesn't claim that they want to obtain a nuclear weapon or a nuclear bomb, so there is no need that we ask them for any guarantee now," Hoshyar Zebari said after meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Manouchehr Mottaki.

I wasn't there at the press conference but I was able to find an audio clip of the same part of minister Zibari's statement through Radio Sawa, and what he said here is so much different from what the CNN claimed he did (my translation):

We respect Iran's and every other nation's right to pursue nuclear technology for research purposes and peaceful use given they accept [giving] the internationally required guarantees that this will not lead to an armament race in the region…

Audio clip available here (Arabic)

Listening to the 2nd version of the story (in Zibari's own voice) it is clear that Iraq recognizes Iran's right to use nuclear power for peaceful purposes exclusively and is moreover asking Iran for guarantees, not the other way around CNN!

Just throught I'd throw it out there, so when you hear some /tinfoil hat on CSPAN this week, or if it is snuck into Murtha's next incoherent rant... you knew it was BS.

Why am I not surprised?

When I first heard the story by CNN, I knew there was something not right about it.

Well, to be fair, maybe their translator is the one with the pro Iran agenda.

Two translations, (at least) which are compared, should be standard procedure to assure accuracy but this is CNN.

Oh, I'd bet a month's salary on the latter. Things have been relatively quiet in Iraq for about a week now and they're desperately reaching.

Well done! ;-)

I get into these discussions with people who's only sources of information are abcnnbcbs and can spout the liberal rhetoric ad-nausea.

But when you point out that an executive from cnn flat out admitted having had a side deal with sadam not to report on atrocities in return for being allowed to keep an office in Baghdad, all you get is a deer-in-the-headlights look from them and then they resume spewing the rhetoric.

The left will continue to watch and then parrot what they hear on the LSM because they don't want the facts, they just want someone to validate what they already believe in their hateful hearts

"== ...I am watching Murtha and he is even more Viscious! =="

Unintentional, but highly descriptive -

vicious - barbarous; able or disposed to inflict pain or suffering.

viscous - sticky; slimy.

Put 'em together and you have this congresscritter nailed!

It was a good one. ;-)

I LOVE seeing CNN get busted.

I've been here in Iraq for two and a half years and watched them lie, lie, lie about everything connected with this mission. I've seen troops get so mad they've demanded CNN be OFF the TVs in the chow halls. I've come close to hurling things at the TV in my room, but refrained, only because it's government property.

I want this fabrication on their part to get OUT ito the mainstream.

I was watching CNN the other day and they were hyping the "massacre in Haditha" by US Marines as "even worse for the image of the USA than the Abu Ghraib scandal". Just to add effect, they were showing flashes of all the Abu Ghraib pictures in the background! Just to inflame anti-US sentiments! Why pull up old pictures that don't even relate to your current attack story, CNN?

(forgive me for seeming to standup for CNN..I dislike them as much as the next rational person)

I've looked at this one with suspicion...I saw the article on CNN.com. Shortly after, I saw the Blog site.

...and wondered why that hadn't made it to the reports and multitude of international news channels I monitor all night at work, (yes, actually part of night shift in the IZ). most other news agencies are keen to point out flaws when CNN screws the pooch. (except BBC, mostly anyway)

Now, that site--Iraq the Model...I quit reading that a long time ago because I sometimes dont think that "Omar" is really over here. It seems awfully sketchy at times---I get the feeling that it's an arabic american doing a lot of research---sometimes the grammer is distinctly americanized english. The sort of grammer that even a brit doesnt pick up after living stateside.

But anywhoo--CNN posted that on the 26th, thats 3 days past over here...as of now, 0630, 29 May-- so far I've not managed to find any other reference to a fouled up translation other than on that Blog.

But then again, I can't translate it either...no locals work on night shift here.

Allegra, you have any guys that would want to give it a shot? (ps...the morning boom was on the penisula south of the bridge...guess its not entirely calm) If anyone can find another place that translates it the same as ITM, lemme know and I'll crawl under a rock to hide. :-)

Translating into a foreign language is difficult, unless one knows how to speak the language. For instance, with above sentence into German:

"Das Übersetzen in eine Fremdsprache ist schwierig, wenn man weiß, wie man die Sprache spricht."

I used the free IMTranslator software to render the firsrt sentence into German. Only a native speaker of German can tell me if the German rendering is idiomatically correct and faithfully expresses what is meant in English. I doubt it is 100% accurate, so it is best to rely on a human translator. If it was just a matter of conjugating verbs and stringing a sentence together, a machine could do a better job of translating than a human being. But it is not that simple: one has to pay attention to the context of the words, the phrasing and the speaker's intent. If these are all missed, what is said can come out wrong. We still do not have software that translates an expression naturally into a given language so it has to be used with caution. And translation will always be more art than science for one set of words may convey the intent behind the original better than another set of words. Or as the old saying has it: "its all in the translation."

(Denny Crane: "Every one should carry a gun strapped to their waist. We need more - not less guns.")

Welcome to the FR Iraq Chapter. There are a few of us here.

My local buyer is out right now, but I'll have a chat with him about this. However, the shop owner I deal with here on our compound told me a couple of days ago that Iraq was in no way backing Iran's nuclear weapons program, that they were only backing anybody's right to conduct nuclear research and technology.

That guy has the news on his TV in there all day. I stop in and watch the people yelling at each other in the courtroom during live coverage of the Saddam trial sometimes. I can't understand much of what they're saying, (I do know "shut-up" in Arabic and you hear that during the trial), but it can be entertaining.

Speaking of "Lost in Translation" has anyone noticed why the media does not translate the Arabic word JIHAD when reporting??
What does JIHAD mean? Could it mean "Holy (As in RELIGIOUS) War"
They would only translate the word if Christians were involved in it I suppose.
