KRAKOW, Poland - Poland's chief rabbi, Michael Schudrich, was punched and sprayed with what appeared to be pepper spray by an unidentified man in downtown Warsaw, but escaped without injuries from what police said may have been an anti-Semitic attack.

At first they came . . . and I said nothing . . .
PING
Let's see how many of the usual suspects try to explain away the climate of anti-Semitism in Poland.
Poles returning to their roots.
It's interesting to note that the Polish police use the same phraseology that Russian and Ukrainian police use in such circumstances "it may have been anti-semitism, but perhaps it was just HOOLIGANISM" - right (/sarcasm).
Unfortunately it appears so. A look at the 2006 corruption report isn't too promising for Poland either. I'm disappointed.
Anit-Polonism alert.
You have an attack on a Rabbi and you consider it "Anti-Polonism" to post about it. Interesting.
It's one non-lethal assult by one anti-semitic hooligan. I hardly see how you can judge the climate of an entire country by one incident.
Every country has its share of anti-semitic hooligans. Poland's no worse than any other.
More on the problem there (and indictive of a wider Eastern European problem - i.e., I'm not saying it's just the Poles, but let's get the truth out there). Never forget.
"Jews in Poland Wary of Ruling Coalition
By Marc Perelman
May 12, 2006
Jewish groups are warning the new Polish government that the inclusion of two far-right parties in its ruling coalition could hamper Warsaw's effort to rebuild its international image and reconcile with the Jewish community.
"This is really a step backwards," said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, who met with Polish officials on Monday in New York. "Poland worked so hard to address the past and they will now face a serious test."

How very sad.
Prayers sent.
Like the people you pinged into the conversation do about Russia? I agree you shouldn't judge an entire nation on the actions of these idiots, HOWEVER, denying the existence of such movements is just as damaging. There is a lot more work to do in all of the Eastern European countries regarding extremism (be it far right or far left).
Yeah, Abe Foxman says it, so there must be true! /sarcasm.
Well, the Iranian president said the Jews should have a nation in Europe.....yeah that would do the trick!
Anti-semitic movements exist everywhere. Who ever denied it?
What I deny is the hysterical exaggeration of their significance by scoundrels like you and Abe Foxman.
There is a lot more work to do in all of the Eastern European countries regarding extremism (be it far right or far left).
Poland isn't part of Eastern Europe.
You might want to note what some Poles have said in the discussion area of that article.
"Poland isn't part of Eastern Europe"
Here, I'll re-write it so I can be "politically correct" - There is still lots more work to do in FORMER WARSAW PACT and SOVIET STATES to battle extremism.
Iran, now there's a real threat to Jews. Instead of wasting their time bemoaning marginal movements, why don't the Abe Foxman's of the world focus on real threats like Iran?
Here's what he said about Iran:
"On Iran: "We cant afford not to take [Ahmadinejad] seriously. The combination of words and capability make Iran the greatest threat to the Jewish people since Hitler."
Sounds like he takes Iran seriously.
I'm confused - why the hostility? How about a condemnation of anti-semitism no matter where it occurs?
I get hostile when I see slander, and Abe Foxman has slandered both my faith and my ethnic heritage numerous times.
Yes, I condemn anti-semitism, and I hope the bastard who attacked the rabbi goes to prison. The police are after him, and I hope they catch him.
I don't really know enough about Abe Foxman - perhaps I'll read up on him. I'm surely not "endorsing" him.
However, my point is anti-semitism needs to be tracked and eliminated regardless of origin. There has been a lot of "not us" on here by people from that region in the past. Especially as they heap scorn on other countries for the same exact incidents. My reason for posting the article to FR is to show it happens everywhere (including in the States).
I agree with you. I also think it's good you posted the article. So long as we refrain from condemning whole nations for the actions of a few individuals, we'll get along just fine.
Have a nice Sunday!
To be fair, this is similar to what happens when a non white beats the crap out of a white man in the US - the police statement usually reads "the motive was robbery, so hate crime charges do not apply".
Back at ya. And btw, I'm not anti-Polish (although a few Poles on here may disagree with that statement!). I posted those articles to show there is still work to be done. Poland appears to be heading in the right direction (although I wish they didn't find it necessary to join the EU), but they need to keep an eye on incidents like this.
That leads me to wonder if it could have been a follower of the "Religion of Peace" living legally (or illegally) in Germany.
That's a good way of looking at it. Except, for example, in Moscow after the attack on the synagogue a couple of policemen tried to downplay it as an act of "hooliganism" - later the culprit fessed up to it being anti-semitic AND asked for forgiveness.
That would be very interesting. Why do I think I'd be more comforted if it was just some homegrown nutjob instead of a "ROP" member....
Yes, Christian Poles were so gleeful about the holocaust that 3 million of them just volunteered to be murdered alongside the Jews.
Amazing how you've allowed yourself to get indocrinated by anti-Polish lies.
Very little sympathy was there for the Jewish victims.
Yeah, that's why there are so many Polish recipients of the Yad Vashem award.
Yawn.
Is it on the Mediterranean? How is it not geographically part of Eastern Europe?
Well hello Lizol. I'm surprised you showed up. You missed my point. That the Pope would get such a greeting in a majority Catholic country is not surprising. What he did at Auschwitz and the reaction to it is fantastic. But, I seem to recall you very active on the threads that spoke of anti-Semitism in Russia (and anything else bad going on there). So, has your position changed? Is anti-semitism in Russia also just an act committed by 1 thug in a nation of millions?
An anti-semitic attack on a Rabbi only gets a "yawn" from you. Interesting.
Geographically, Poland is in the center of Europe. Hence it is most accurate to characterize it as part of Central Europe.
Culturally, it has more in common with Austria, Germany, the Czechs, Hungary, etc than it has with Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, etc.
The modern (mis)classification as "Eastern" is a result of Poland falling under Soviet domination after WW2.
I don't find this article interesting.
I won? Hmmm. All I have to do is look at any threads started with bad news about Russia and guess who I see as the thread starter most of the time??
Personally, I'd be thrilled if there was no bad news of this type to post.
We would all do well to be mindful of the common Islamic threat against the US, and the countries many of our forebearers came from. Fighting among ourselves gives aid to the enemy.
Well, some are loyal to one country (Poland), others are loyal to the other one (Russia). Nothing unusual.
I've posted on polish anti-semitism before, it's hardly an isolated incident.
Further with the tiny number of jews in Poland, its practically epidemic!
Well one crazy in Moscow attacks a synagogue, and you Poles haven't shut up about that since, so right back at ya!
Once again - please - show me a "bad" thread posted by me, that would be related not to the Russian govermnent and its policy, but to the Russian nation, society, people.
Thanks for proving my # 43.
what about the one where you mention pissing in russians' soup?
and you find their food import objections strange?
That was a joke relating to your conspiration theories about Poles.
Now I'll know, that I shouldn't count on your sense of humour.
You reguraly make jokes at the expense of Russians.
You also jumped on a thread of about US visa policy and made a comment about Russians.
