Weekend Gross        Percent change from previous week

The DaVinci Code      $34,000,000            -55.9%
Over the Hedge          $26,875,000            -30.1%

I looked for this info in the MSM and didn't see it. I could have missed it but all I saw was "'DaVinci' continues strong overseas".

Both movies have been out for two weeks. "Over the Hedge" is getting decent reviews while "DaVinci" is not. Next weekend will determine if "DaVinci" sinks or swims but, it sure looks like it's sinking. I can't say I'm terribly upset about that.

Pretty standard drop-off. Every heavily promoted movie has a big opening weekend and then a drop of 50% or more as people turn to the next film.

My kids loved Over the Hedge. Especially the squirrel. I guess every cartoon is going to have an over caffinated squirrel now.

True, but "Over the Hedge", over the same time period, dropped by only 30% and "MI:3", in it's fourth week of release, dropped by only 41% with decent reviews and "Poseidon", in it's third week of release, dropped only 40% with awful reviews. Like I said, next week's box office should tell if "DaVinci" is truly a money maker or not. My sense is that it will not be a money maker.

Right now, it's drawing the "I'm not supposed to see this, so I'm going to see it" crowd. That is unlikely to last but, we'll see.

How does Memorial Day weekend measure up against other "holiday" weekends as far as box office goes?

Hey, X-Men was at the top of my summer movie list.

I didn't even like the book for the DaVinci Code. No desire to drop $17 to take 2 to the movies for that one.

DaVinci will be burried here after next week. It is not a summer long blockbuster.

I went and saw it this weekend. Yawn
(BTW, I'm secure in my faith enough to read and watch movies that may cause weaker minds to take off their clothes and join in pagan celebrations)

It followed the book so closely there were no surprises, it was pleasant seeing some of the locales of the film, but not worth 8 bucks.

One scene that seemed unique to the film was the one where Sopie 'cures' Langdon of his claustraphobia. I don't recall that in the book at all and thought it was bit over the top to have her 'healing'.

I read the book a year or so ago, so my recollection may be faulty. Do any other freepers remember her 'healing' powers in the book?

The Da Vinci' drop is typical for a film, especially after a huge opening weekend. It wont drop that much next week. Same thing will happen to X-men.

The 'Over the Hedge' drop would be atypical for any kind of film other than a CGI kiddie flick, those always hold up very well.

X Men was good, probably the best of the X movies honestly, I was suprised.

Over the Hedge is a good kids movie.

Cars will be the next one I'll likely be seeing.

I think they've already doubled their money, so unless there's a magic profit margin that marks a "money maker", you may be wrong.

Seems someone has their dollar figures backwards. According to an AP story, ""Da Vinci," starring Tom Hanks, was the second-highest grossing film of the four-day weekend with $43 million, down 56 percent from last week's impressive opening weekend."

Which added to it's previous take makes it a huge success already.

And Christianity remains strong, church attendance hasn't dropped, and people remained secure in their faith. Who'd have guessed? :-)

The DaVinci Code will make most of its money overseas.

Not sure about that. I think they may have "doubled" their production costs. However, that does not take into account the huge amount they sunk into promotion, the theater's cut of the proceeds, etc.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Usually, the marketing costs are about the same as the cost to make a movie. So a $125 Million cost of making a movie means $250 Million total cost when marketing is added into the expense column.

Or so I am told.

It's already paid for itself just here in the U.S.

It cost $125 million to make and is closing in on a half BILLION dollars in ticket sales.

I have to laugh at how many people who were opposed to it from the beginning then paid to see it so they could report it was boring (not necessarily talking about this thread but of the numerous Da Vinci threads).
