Bush's Treasury Nominee Gave to Dems
Human Events ^ | May 30, 2006 | Robert B. Bluey

Posted on 05/30/2006 2:00:26 PM PDT by boryeulb

President Bush’s nominee to lead the Department of the Treasury has a history of giving money to Democrats and liberal causes. Former President Bill Clinton, Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley, Sen. Chuck Schumer and the pro-abortion Emily’s List have benefited from his largesse, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

The nominee, Henry M. Paulson Jr., chief executive of Goldman Sachs, has given tens of thousands of dollars to Republicans over the past 15 years, but prior to 2000 he also donated money to Democrats who are staunchly opposed to Bush’s agenda.

In fact, during Bush’s campaign for the White House in 1999, Paulson gave $1,000 to Bradley, who sought and eventually lost the Democratic nomination to Al Gore. Paulson gave $2,000 to Sen. John McCain (R.-Ariz.) prior to the 2000 election, but there is no record of his donating to Bush.

Paulson has given more than $20,000 to the liberal League of Conservation Voters since 1998. It is one of his favorite charities. In 1997 he donated $500 to Emily’s List, a group that backs candidates who support abortion.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D.-N.Y.), a member of the Finance Committee, was the recipient of two $1,000 gifts in 1996. Paulson also gave $2,000 to incumbent Republican Sen. Alfonse D’Amato, but those gifts came a year earlier.

Shortly after Bush nominated Paulson this morning, Schumer offered his unwavering support. “His experience, intelligence and deep understanding of national and global economic issues make him the best pick America could have hoped for,” said Schumer, according to the Associated Press.

Sen. Evan Bayh (D.-Ind.) received a $1,000 check from Paulson in 1997 when Bayh was running against Republican Paul Helmke. Sen. Chris Dodd (D.-Conn.) was the beneficiary of a $1,000 check in 1989. The late Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D.-Tex.) received $1,000 in 1991.

Even former President Bill Clinton scored $1,000 from Paulson in 1992. Clinton was running against Bush’s father at the time. During the 1992 election cycle, Paulson also donated $1,000 to George H.W. Bush, but those checks were written in 1991—at least two months before he gave to Clinton.

Writing for HUMAN EVENTS today, Steven Milloy of the Free Enterprise Education Institute has outlined the ideological and ethical challenges that could face Paulson as he awaits a hearing in the Senate.

The nominee, Henry M. Paulson Jr., chief executive of Goldman Sachs

This story confirms my first impression. Anyone important at Goldman Sachs is a big time left wing DemocRAT.

Does 'League of conservation voters' imply Greenpeacers (i.e. communists), or does that include conservation groups such as Ducks or Trout Unlimited as well?

1998 Cycle shows the same pattern as my last post, mostly Republican causes with token Dems thrown in- with the exception of the League of Conservation Voters, the large contributions went to Republicans.

Now to show the other side of his contributions would give a more fairer light on this candidate. I don't think the writer had that in mind. /sarc

Wrote just enough information to give to those handwringers that needed a reason to moan and groan about Bush's choice.

Looks like he was giving to Schumer and the like back in the mid-90's.

And lately he's been giving to Republicans.

Note they say Mrs. Henry Paulson Jr., not Henry Paulson Jr.

Looks like bad reporting on the issue..

Meh... I'm noticing a trend here of a BIG push on articles that might 'piss off' the true bush haters and posers around here.

I will bet that 90% of the people in this tread don't know a single thing about the guy other than what the OP clipped together.

Furthermore I'll bet that quite a few don't care, and won't try to learn about him, but only clicked the thread because it looked like a good chance to cry and whine and complain as some kind of sick, demented, catharsis.

That is, those that aren't the obvious dimocrap trolls that I always see in these threads.

I've been in the President's corner through every media-manufactured sh*tstorm that's hit him. But I hate this new-tone garbage. Every liberal this President hires steals a job from a worthy conservative and ultimately ends up stabbing him in the back (Powell, Whitman, O'Neill).

I'm so damn tired of seeing him play nice with the treason party.

I suppose his political beliefs don't matter if he's competent at the Treasury.

But I confess that I find anyone who donates to Emily's List despicable.

Rich man donating to the baby killers, to clear all that excess population out of the way. Despicable.

WRONG. There are definitely at least some of the League of Conservation Voters donations by a MISTER Paulson.

And pardon me, but I do not see the republican trend of which you speak. I see donations to primarily liberal causes and candidates, with the rare RINO thrown in.

And I'd hardly consider giving money to Arlen Specter to be a good thing.

I think that is a pretty good bet.

That so many here are eager to believe negative articles about this administration is, in my opinion, proof that the immigration issue is almost completely based in raw emotionalism.

Is it a problem, of course. Should we start to believe everything we read, even from the "conservative" press? Sure. Just as soon as we check our brains at the door.

I wonder how many dopes on this board would admit to voting for Ross Perot for President of the United States, in 1992, when it was widely known that both he and his wife were on the board of Planned Parenthood of Dallas?

Yet, some of the same people are likely screaming because the guy who might be in charge of the coin purse likes to plant trees in his spare time.

Plus look up his wife Wendy Paulson.
This isn't to say defiantly that he is liberal or conservative, these could be direct donations or they could be in-kind donations for his wife (based on her donation patterns the latter seems likely)
What this does imply is that this story is not all it is cracked up to be and isn't as 'cut and dry' as human events wants us to believe.

It also directly contradicts the article that he 'hasn't donated to President Bush' in that there are donations directly to the President. It also shows rather large donations to Conservative causes, such as $20,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Again, it raises questions as to the validity or motive of the article that these were overlooked.

This isn't to say defiantly that he is liberal or conservative, these could be direct donations or they could be in-kind donations for his wife (based on her donation patterns the latter seems likely)

A man who will donate to extreme left-wing causes just because his wife likes them is someone to watch out for. If he doesn't agree with those liberals causes, then he's under his wife's influence to a scary degree. (I'd say the same if the roles were reversed, so no sexism here.)

If just the wife donated, then yes, no big deal. But he donated himself. That tells me a lot.

Wow...according to your info Paulsen gave $25,000 to the National Republican Senatorial Cmte as recently as '05.

He definitely is NOT a Hillary-backer.

Thanks for the additional info.

I see other Conservative groups like TOMPAC on there that I didn't see on my search but I still cannot find a single donation to Emily's List. Do you know if they go by another name?

Even more.. see the other links. I cannot find any record of donations to Emily's List during any of the years.

Maybe I should change my tag line to 'Doubt the Media'

This statement from the article seems to be flatly untrue

On that much we can agree. HOWEVER, it seems clear to me that MOST of his Republican donations came after Bush was in office which makes me even more suspicious of his conservative credentials. I'm not saying that this is the case at all, but be prepared for some to point out how this could be interpreted as the guy hoping to get in good with the current administration by donating tons of money and Bush repaying him with a very high-level spot.

That, or "why would Terry Jeffries intentionally mislead about a Treasury Secretary nominee? Twice?"
