Sen. John McCain called on Orange County Latino leaders Wednesday to support his immigration bill, saying it was time for them to "speak for people who cannot speak for themselves."
"You are the role models," McCain said to a mostly Latino audience of 340 gathered at the Hyatt Regency Irvine.
McCain (R-Ariz.) came to Orange County a hotbed of opposition to illegal immigration to garner support from the Hispanic 100, a 3-year-old organization that has organized events with President Bush, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and gubernatorial candidates.
...
In Orange County, McCain said Latino leaders must press Congress to approve a final measure that mirrored legislation he co-wrote with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass).
...
Referring to a poem by Emma Lazarus at the Statute of Liberty, McCain said, "The lady that holds the lamp beside the golden door, that is what kind of nation we are."

Seems they've had a very loud voice in this new Meximerica.
McCain, pandering. No real values of his own. Acting like algore in that he'd do anything to become president.
Go home shut up and retire John cause you ain't gonna get the nod.
It's always nice to see McCain waste his time. Orange County is about 80% against amnesty.
Amnesty Aint cuttin it.
Thankfully because of stunts like this McCain will never win the republican nomination for president.
Could not have said it better myself. Makes you wonder what his constituents back in Arizona tolerate his bizarre behavior.
This goof ball will now come to Iowa and try to pretend he is trying to stop illegal immigration. We aren't that stupid.
"Sen. John McCain called on Orange County Latino leaders Wednesday to support his immigration bill, saying it was time for them to "speak for people who cannot speak for themselves."
Go to hell, McCain...from a legal citizen. Maybe if the illegals spoke ENGLISH they COULD speak for themselves.
Puke!!!!!!!!!
If they don't like it the situation should go back to the country of which they are citizens.
This guy has a 'god' complex!!! It is NOT his nation to personally destroy.
You've got to be kidding, poloticos have long held that Iowans are inept. It's the second place they come to press their lies. The locals eat up their b.s. about how Sen. Dodd or some other goofball gives a damn about farmers.
Exactly!
But they dont' have to.
They simply Push #2 for Spanish.
We have REPUBLICANS and DEMOCRATS here in Iowa. There is a huge difference although I have to give Iowa Democrats credit for not selecting Dean.
Actually I love coming to the amanna colonies for some of the best food ever offered at any price.
And I know there are at least a few Repubs in the good farm state. I just think many politicians take Iowans for rubes.
"speak for people who cannot speak for themselves."
I've lost all respect for this guy. What about the taxpayers across the US who are getting hammered because of illegals?
Who speaks for us?
Are you counting Santa Ana and Garden Grove in thar 80%?
This is old news for everyone on FR, but it certainly confirms McCain's lack of fitness for the presidency.
We've actually done a pretty good job of weeding out the weaker candidates during the caucus process.
I do not see McCain getting any traction. I only know of one person supporting him and I've told him what I think.
If McCain is the nominee, I will vote for him.
Unfortunately, they have more than a voice--they have our Senate and our President.
Yeeaaaaaargh!
Good job, you go there greatgrandma.
Hopefully the entire national republican party weeds out the rinos.

That has always been a mystery to me too. I know several people in Arizona, and none of them think McCain deserves to be Senator because he refuses to acknowledge them. He probably still runs on the hero thing from Vietnam.
Hi Newman - Gosh, I wonder why McCain didn't visit the REAL hotbed of immigrants in Santa Ana? He probably didn't bring his gun with him... :^)
John McVain, doing the work most Americans don't want to do...
Old page (2003?) and photo though (note Jarmillo top right).

The yellow sheet {LA Times} will never report that.
Garden Grove's asians are not supporting amnesty.
I wouldnt be so sure with the over-generalizations up in San Francisco, at least some of the Asian-immigrant community want to be included in the amnesty too:
While much of the debate has focused on Latino and undocumented immigrants, Asian Americans have just as much at stake, say lawyers, activists and community workers. "It's important that the Asian and Pacific Islander communities stand together," said Atashi Chakravarty, executive director of Narika, an organization that works with abused South Asian women."

So, all I have to do is find ONE Asian from Garden Grove who supports "amnesty" then?
How do you think Reps. Mike Honda, D-Calif., Robert Matsui, D-Calif., and David Wu, D-Ore. voted on H.R. 4437.
I said generally not universally.
None of those Congressmen represent Orange County.
No, you said: "Garden Grove's asians are not supporting amnesty." You are now qualifying that statement?
I understand, but it was another tangent.
You are acting silly.
Aww, give us a break! You're supposedly a lawyer--right? Can't you use whatever analytical ability you have to make a meaningful point?
McCain VS Hillary...What will you do?
That's fine with me - as long as you are not implying that ALL Asians are against "amnesty" - that's all I wanted to prove. I have not seen any polling data on whether MOST Asians are against "amnesty" so I don't know.
(Denny Crane: "Every one should carry a gun strapped to their waist. We need more - not less guns.")
You got that right.
I consider him the most dangerous man in the USA - more then Ted Kennedy.
He's fooled *SOME* people into the thinking he is a conservative.
He only represents the MSM in congress, not the people of Arizona.
