RATHERS DENY SPLIT (Thank God)
NY Post ^ | June 1, 2006 | Liz Smith

Posted on 06/01/2006 11:17:31 AM PDT by presidio9

THE DAN Rathers of New York and Austin, Texas, signal me that the rumor of their impending divorce is as highly exaggerated as the story of Mark Twain's death while he was still alive and kicking.

I saw the Rathers in the capital city of Texas, where they have a condo overlooking the Colorado River. They buzz into town from their nearby ranch for games of bridge and barbecue. They always act like teenagers who just met. In fact, the artist Jean says to me that the only "D" word around their house is "date night." The couple just celebrated their 49th anniversary in Las Vegas, where Dan received the NAB Distinguished Service Award for lifetime achievement. They are planning their 50th some place equally exotic.

While I'm on the subject, the great reporter Mr. Rather recently interviewed me for an extensive piece on "CBS Sunday Morning." It turned out to be quite a story, and so Dan has not disappeared from television as many feared. I don't know what the ratings are for this popular show, but I heard from just about everybody in Western civilization after it aired. And this means that all those people saw Dan Rather at his best. He asked me some tough questions.

Dan Rather said if he was getting a divorce he wanted to be the first to break the story.

THE DAN Rathers of New York and Austin, Texas...

Just to make this clear, because Liz certainly didn't make it clear: Was she writing about him and his wife, or about Dan's split personalities?

Dan Rather although made many mistakes does not deserve to have his marriage discussed especially if not true. Talk about the lousey articles that he wrote, but leave the marriage off limits especially after 49 years. I don't believe in divorse anyway.

There is no divorce. The marriage certificate is valid, notwithstanding the peripheral fonts and superscript characters where Dan Rather's name is typed in.

You gotta admit, his Ratherisms are pretty funny. They're not Texan, by any means - no one down here talks like that - so I have to give him points for originality.

"His lead is as thin as turnip soup."

"This race is hotter than a Times Square Rolex."

(To Joe Lockhart) "I know that you'd rather walk through a furnace in a gasoline suit than consider the possibility that John Kerry would lose Ohio."

"We used to say if a frog had side pockets, he'd carry a handgun."

"We don't know what to do. We don't know whether to wind a watch or bark at the moon."

"It's beginning to get exciting as the Democrats' fingernails are starting to sweat."

"This race is tight like a too-small bathing suit on a too-long ride home from the beach."

"We've lived by the crystal ball, we're eating so much broken glass. We're in critical condition."

"Dan received the NAB Distinguished Service Award for lifetime achievement"

I could not care less about the state of this bozo's marriage, but I am stunned with jaw-dropping nausea by the report that Dan Blather has received this "lifetime achievement" award from the National Assn. of Broadcasters!! This means that the NAB honchos are trying to rewrite history already, to pretend that Rathergate was just some trivial blip and no negative reflection upon the lying fraudster that is Dan Blather.

Since when did the Colorado river run through Texas?

Since prehistoric times when the ocean receded leaving the land that is the Great State of Texas!

The Colorado River in Texas is not the same Colorado River that divides parts of Arizona and California.

Your geography lesson for the day.

We have our 'own' Colorado river, which we've dammed 6 times to make 7 knockout impoundments known as the Highland Lakes.

P.S. don't come visit them. 'Cuz you won't go back home and we're overrun as it is :).

Entirely within Texas, this Colorado River has its origins near Lamesa and empties into the Gulf of Mexico in Matagorda County below Bay City. Near its start, it forms Lake Thomas, then near Robert Lee it fills E.V. Spence Reservoir. It fills O.H. Ivie Reservoir near Ballinger and forms Lake Buchanan near Buchanan Dam before passing through Austin and forming Lake Walter E. Long. It then makes a gentle southeast curve to its outlet.

Ever since Austin was built there. In fact, I'd bet the river was there first. A simple look at a map would answer your question, had it occurred to you to do so. :)

I don't believe in divorce either, but I really don't believe in divorce after 49 years. How in God's name do you spend 49 years with a person, and then suddenly decide you can't stand being around them?

Yeah, but the 'real' Colorado River is much longer and runs from the Colorado Rockies through Utah and Arizona, the Grand Canyon, etc...... this can't be THE Colorado River so it must be some local imposter made up by Texans who couldn't pick another name..... :^)

Just kidding, don't shoot.......

Since Mark Twain is, in fact, dead, then the gist of this is the divorce is coming, it's just a matter of time.

I partial to this "Ratherism:"

"Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers. That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point where-if I knew then what I know now-I would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.

But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.

Please know that nothing is more important to us than people's trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully."
