Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - June 2006

Posted on 06/01/2006 7:04:43 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Al-Qaeda's Long March to War
(Full Story)

In recent weeks, media reports from both Iraq and Afghanistan have suggested the appearance of a slow evolution of the Islamist insurgents' tactics in the direction of the battlefield deployment of larger mujahideen units that attack "harder" facilities.

These attacks are not replacing small-unit attacks, ambushes, kidnappings, assassinations and suicide bombings in either country, but rather seem to be initial and tentative forays toward another stage of fighting.

"Md. man planned to bomb abortion clinic"
Baltimore Sun ^ | June 8, 2006 | Stephen Manning - AP

Posted on 06/08/2006 7:46:58 PM PDT by RDTF

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A man was arrested today and charged with making a bomb that he planned to use to attack an abortion clinic, a device that went off in the home of a friend while authorities were trying to disable it.

Robert F. Weiler Jr., 25, of Forestville, was arrested more than 140 miles away at a Garrett County rest stop on Interstate 68 about 12:30 a.m. after he called agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to surrender. He told authorities that he made the bomb and had a gun he planned to use in the attack, according to court documents.

The device, a pipe bomb filled with nails that was stored in a closet at the friend's home in Riverdale, exploded several hours later as a bomb technician tried to defuse it. No one was injured, but the house was set on fire."

Here's an article to be reposted three or four times.

Secretive, powerful Bilderberg group
meets near Ottawa

These guys, you've probably never even heard of, and if you believe the camera-toting followers who attend all their meetings, they control the world.

They're called the Bilderberg group.

They include European royalty, national leaders, political power-brokers, and heads of the world's biggest companies.

Those who follow the Bilderberg group say it got Europe to adopt a common currency, got Bill Clinton elected after he agreed to support NAFTA, and is spending this week deciding what to do about high oil prices and that pesky fundamentalist president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

ICE Agents Seize Cocaine Worth $4.3 Million Hidden In Tractor-trailer Cab
Second significant seizure in the area this week

MCALLEN, Texas — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents seized 153.6 kilograms of cocaine stashed inside the sleeper compartment of a semi truck cab.

Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop on a tractor-trailer rig Tuesday on highway 281. Shortly after the stop, the driver granted consent for a search. The rig was taken to the Hidalgo Port of Entry, where Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers checked it using the Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System (VACIS). CBP uses VACIS to identify concealed narcotics and illegal immigrants.

Results from the check indicated an abnormal area in the floor of the sleeper section of the cab, and a subsequent search revealed a compartment containing 140 bundles of cocaine with an estimated street value of $4.3 million. The cocaine and tractor-trailer were turned over McAllen ICE agents for further investigation.

ICE agents also seized more than 4,350 pounds of marijuana and more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine at a Falcon Dam residence on Monday. The drugs are valued at over $36 million.

“These are significant seizures,” said Alonzo Pena, special agent-in-charge for the ICE office in San Antonio. “They demonstrate ICE’s commitment to identify and close vulnerabilities in our nation’s borders. We will not stand by as criminal organizations attempt to poison the United States with illicit drugs.”

ICE encourages the reporting of suspicious criminal activity related to drugs or the smuggling of illegal aliens to call its toll-free hotline at 1-866-DHS-2-ICE. Investigators staff this hotline around the clock.

ICE Agents Seize Cocaine Worth $4.3 Million Hidden In Tractor-trailer Cab
Defendants alleged to have served in army unit that committed human rights violations

SALT LAKE CITY – Four former members of the Bosnian Serb military appeared in federal court here this morning to face visa fraud charges, following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) into allegations they failed to disclose their prior Bosnian Serb military service when they applied for immigration benefits, allowing them to relocate to the United States.

Yesterday, ICE agents arrested Milenko Stjepanovic, 55; Mirka Stjepanovic, 53; Ranko Nastic, 54; and Branko Ristic 46. All four defendants, who currently live in the Salt Lake City area, are citizens of the former Yugoslavia, now Bosnia-Herzegovina. Indictments unsealed this morning allege that they made materially false statements on their immigration benefit applications, failing to disclose that they had served in the Bosnian Serb military during the Bosnian War of 1992 to 1995.

Because of the atrocities committed by all sides during the Bosnian War, Bosnians who seek refuge in the United States are required to declare all military service, including service in the Bosnian Serb Army, on immigration forms.

While under oath, the defendants allegedly did not reveal their prior military service with the Army of the Republika Srpska, or the Vojska Republika Srpska (VRS). The VRS participated in human rights violations, including the Srebrenica massacre, which resulted in the capture and execution of thousands of Bosnian Muslim men and boys during 1995. The Srebrenica massacre has been classified as genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Individuals who have persecuted others are not admissible to the United States by law.

“We will not allow the United States to become a sanctuary for those using fraud and deception to qualify for refugee status,” said Joseph Romel, assistant special agent in charge for the ICE office of investigations in Utah. “These individuals willfully concealed their prior service in the military and this raises serious questions about their basic claims to eligibility.”

Acting U.S. Attorney for Utah Stephen J. Sorenson emphasized that the indictments returned by a Utah grand jury do not allege the defendants committed war crimes in Bosnia, but that they were members of the Vojska Republika Srpska, the Serbian military, and soldiers in the Zvornik Brigade, which played a role at Srebrenica. Sorenson said there have been some instances where VRS members admitted military service and, after careful review, were able to obtain status in the United States. When the military service is not disclosed, however, the review is not conducted.

“The failure of these defendants to list their military service on refugee applications and subsequent applications here in Utah to obtain permanent residency precluded proper and meaningful screenings of their cases,” Sorenson said. “We believe the immigration status each of these defendants presently enjoys was obtained by fraud.”

Visa fraud carries a potential maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. The defendants are scheduled to stand trial in August. A hearing for Milenko Stjepanovic is scheduled for June 12 at 9:15 a.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge David Nuffer.

'Islamic indoctrination' taken to Supreme Court
Asked to review case of class that had students 'become Muslims'

Posted: June 9, 2006

A public-interest legal group is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review a decision by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals allowing a California public school to engage in a three-week intensive course for 7th graders on how to "become Muslims."

A California federal trial court and the 9th Circuit, widely considered the nation's most liberal appeals court, determined the class did not violate the Constitution.

As WND reported, the lawsuit was filed by the Thomas More Law Center against the Byron Union School District and various school officials to stop the "Islam simulation" materials and methods used in the Excelsior School in Byron, Calif.

The 2001 course had students take Islamic names and wear identification tags that displayed their new Islamic name and the Muslim star and crescent moon. They also were handed materials that instructed them to "Remember Allah always so that you may prosper"; complete the Islamic five pillars of faith, including fasting; and memorize and recite the "Bismillah," or "In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate," which students also wrote on banners hung on the classroom walls.

Students also played "jihad games" during the course, which was part of the school's world history and geography program.

Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Law Center, said the "case cries out double standard."

"The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals is the same court that held our Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional because it contained the phrase 'under God,' and yet they allow a three-week intensive course on how to become Muslims, including class memorization of Islamic prayers and participation in Islamic religious rituals," Thompson said.

Edward L. White III, the Law Center's trial counsel handling the case, argued that although a public school may teach about religion, the school district "went far beyond an explanation of the historical or literary significance of Islam and placed these seventh graders into the position of becoming trainees in that religion."

"These young children were indoctrinated in Islam, which the Constitution forbids," White said.

The Supreme Court will decide within the next few months whether to review the case.

The Law Center argues the panel did not address the plaintiff's claims that their free exercise and parental rights had been violated.

White says parents were never told about the Islamic program and didn't know they had the option to remove their children from such an activity.

One of the parents found out by accident, looking through her son's schoolbag after the program had finished.

In December 2003, the San Francisco court determined the school district had not violated the Constitution.

In her 22-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton determined Excelsior was not indoctrinating students about Islam when it required them to adopt Muslim names and pray to Allah, but rather was just teaching them about the Muslim religion.

But White insists a line was crossed, placing the students in the "position of being trainees in Islam, which is impermissible in a public school."

When WorldNetDaily first reported the story in January 2002 – shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks committed by 19 Islamist terrorists – major controversy ensued nationwide.

The course was part of a curriculum taught to seventh-graders all over the state, included in the state's curriculum standards required by the state board of education. Although the standards outline what subjects should be taught and included in state assessment tests, they didn't mandate how they're to be taught.

At the end of the three-week course, Excelsior teacher Brooke Carlin presented a final test requiring students to critique Muslim culture.

The Islam simulations at Excelsior are outlined in the state-adopted textbook "Across the Centuries," published by Houghton Mifflin, which prompts students to imagine they are Islamic soldiers and Muslims on a Mecca pilgrimage.

The lawsuit also alleges students were encouraged to use such phrases in their speech as "Allahu Akbar," which is Arabic for "God is greatest," and were required to fast during lunch period to simulate fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Nevertheless, Judge Hamilton ruled the program was devoid of "any devotional or religious intent" and was, therefore, educational, not religious in nature.

Bilderberg-bound filmmaker held at airport [Alex Jones]
Ottawa Citizen ^ | 6/8/06 | Laura Payton

Canadian authorities detained an American activist filmmaker at the Ottawa airport late Wednesday night, confiscating his passport, camera equipment and most of his belongings.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada agents stopped Alex Jones, whose films include Martial Law 9/11: The Rise of the Police State, and questioned him for nearly four hours before letting him go with only one change of clothes and telling him to return Thursday morning.

“It’s really chilling, like a police state,” said Mr. Jones of his detention.

Mr. Jones and his crew, camera operators Ryan Schlickeisen and Aaron Dykes, travelled to Canada to film a documentary about the Bilderberg group, a secretive group of former politicians and business leaders who are meeting in Ottawa this week.

Interesting and scary followup here:

Disgraceful how Alex Jones was treated, and handled by the Canadian government. If there was nothing to hide, they then had no reason to detain him. Therefore, they are concealing something. Alex Jones is not a terrorist, but he did expose the Bohemian Grovers, which is one and the same as the Bildergergs. Good, the more they hide themselves, the more inquisitive the people will become about this New World Order of thieves!

Bilderberg to Meet in Canada

James P Tucker – American Free Press May 21, 2006

The secretive group known as Bilderberg will hold its annual secret meeting at the posh Brook Street Resort a few miles from Ottawa, Canada, June 8-11.

The location and part of the agenda was disclosed to American Free Press by a source inside Bilderberg’s inner circle.

High on the Bilderberg’s secret agenda this year are oil prices and the political upheaval in Latin America. When meeting last year in Rottach-Egern, Germany, Bilderberg called for dramatic increases in the price of oil. Oil prices started climbing immediately from $40 a barrel to $70.

Whether Bilderberg will call for still higher prices is unclear, but Henry Kissinger and others had gleefully anticipated ultimate prices at $150 a barrel a year ago. Bilderberg is certainly concerned about supply, which is related to the “Latin American problem,” as one insider said.

Approximately 120 international leaders in politics and finance will also discuss the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which has caused a rare breach between American Bilderbergers and their European counterparts since the United States Iraq invasion in 2003. Whether the United States should invade Iran is also high on the agenda.

Bilderberg is especially concerned about Venezuela, where as part of a plan to increase revenues from its petroleum industry President Hugo Chavez said May 7 he would impose a new tax on companies that extract oil from his country. Big Oil is represented at Bilderberg by Jeroen van der Veer of The Netherlands, chairman of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group and Franco Bernabe of Italy, vice chairman of Rothschild Europe, among others. “We are going to create a new oil tax, called the tax on extraction,”

Chavez said. “The companies that are pumping oil in Venezuela are making a lot of money.”

Chavez accused foreign oil companies of exploiting his country’s vast petroleum reserves without paying sufficient taxes. Venezuela is the world’s fifth-largest oil exporter but has troubled oil barons by sending cheap petroleum to needy American families and subsidizing domestic use so local citizens pay 12 cents a gallon.

Venezuela has voided oil-pumping contracts with private companies at 32 fields and replaced them with a mixed-company model that gave Venezuela’s state-owned Petroleos de Venezuela SA a minimum 60 percent stake. Chavez has also sharply raised royalties and taxes, and reduced potential drilling acreage by almost two-thirds. He is also resisting expansion of NAFTA throughout the hemisphere, a prime Bilderberg goal.

Chavez’s outspoken criticisms of the United States make it unlikely that American Bilderbergers can help smooth over the supply problem. However, banker David Rockefeller’s family has always had a heavy interest in oil and other investments in South America.

President Bush will have a top White House aide representing him at Bilderberg, and high officials of the state, defense and treasury departments will attend. Heads of state and other high officials in government and banking will attend from Europe and Canada.

Bilderberg’s agenda also includes the turmoil in the Middle East, nuclear proliferation, with an emphasis on Iran, North Korea and Pakistan, and global warming.

The Bilderberg group takes it name from the hotel in Holland where the group met in 1954, during the earliest period of its inception. Bilderbergers meet regularly, presumably on a once-a-year basis, at various locations around the world, always in extreme secrecy, often at resorts controlled by either the Rockefeller or Rothschild families. The Rothschild family is the leading European force within the Bilderberg Group, sharing its power with the American-based Rockefeller empire.

Bilderberg maintains an extremely low profile and seldom, if ever, publishes reports or studies for the public, at least, under its own official aegis. Participants denied the groups very existence for decades until it was forced into the open by the glare of media publicity, generated largely by the now defunct Spotlight newspaper.

"Congress to hold hearings into OKC bombing
Examining foreign connection to plot, including Arab terrorists"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "In what some on Capitol Hill are calling a surprising decision, Rep. Henry Hyde, R-Ill., has given the nod for hearings into the long-debated question of whether those responsible for the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building had help from any foreign source.

Spurred to action by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., Hyde has given Rohrabacher's Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House International Relations Committee the wide-ranging authority to conduct interviews and subpoena documents related to the April 19, 1995, terrorist attack that left 168 dead, 19 of them children.

Interviewed Wednesday, Rohrabacher confirmed that his nearly two-year-long personal investigation into the Oklahoma City tragedy had finally received the necessary support for an official congressional investigation."

"Ruthless Zarqawi kicked out"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "But his tactics have alienated many Iraqis, even those sympathetic to the insurgency. Azzam, whose father is known as the “prince of the Mujaheedin”, said that he was accused of “creating an independent group” in Iraq, “making political mistakes” and hijacking the Iraqi insurgency for his own cause.

The claims could not be confirmed, but they did add to mounting evidence that al Zarqawi has been increasingly isolated over the past months because of his ruthless tactics.

The council appears to have demoted al Zarqawi and replaced him with a relative unknown, Abdullah bin Rashid al-Baghdadi."

Iran launches new round of N-enrichment: IAEA

Posted on 06/09/2006 1:16:59 AM PDT by familyop

NEW YORK: In what diplomats described as an attempt to strengthen its bargaining position, Iran launched a new round of nuclear enrichment as the Europeans were presenting a package of incentive in return for Tehran giving up its programme, the UN nuclear watchdog agency said.

In a report sent to the agency's 35-member board, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed Elbaradei said Iran had started feeding uranium gas (UF6 gas) into cascade of 164 centrifuge machines on Tuesday after a five-week break.

In addition, the report said Iran is also continuing the work of installation two more 164-machine cascades of centrifuges in which the gas is spun at high speed.

Diplomats said they were not sure of Iran's intentions but continuing its programme does show that Iran wants to ensure that the world does not get the impression that it stopped its uranium enrichment under pressure from the West and the United States.

"Tampa GOP Cyber-Attack"
By Joe Kaufman | June 9, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "One of the tell-tale signs of partiality towards terrorism is the exhibit of an intense hatred towards Jews and/or Christians. During Cyber-Raider’s hacks, the group has gone after both. On one hacked site, Cyber-Raider left the following message: “F--k the Denmark and Italy and Israel.” Denmark, of course, was a reference to the series of Mohammed cartoons that were published by the Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten [The Jyllands-Posten, itself, was hacked – from a site being hosted by a company based in Tampa.] The mention of Italy is most probably a reference to Italy’s monthly magazine, Studi Cattolici, which, according to a report in London’s Telegraph, “infuriated Muslims” by publishing a cartoon portraying Mohammed “cut in half and burning in hell.”

On another Cyber-Raider hacked site (in coordination with another hacker group, Turkhackerler), in keeping with the Mohammed cartoon theme, the following message was found: “FOR ISLAM FOR TURKEY… While All Islam World regard with reverence to your prophet and address him as Hz. ISA A.S (Christ) (putting a holy prefix in front of his name), You keep abusing, Islam’s almighty Prophet with disgusting and disgraceful cartoons using excuses of freedom of speech. No doubt, Hz. Isa (Christ) would hate your nation. Be G-d’s Curse on You!”

The question arises why this group would go after the TBYR site."

"Pakistani Gets Over 12 Years for Exporting Military Parts to Middle East"
June 08, 2006
Vox Populi, Jim Kouri
by Jim Kouri, CPP

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A 56-year-old Pakistani weapons trader who masterminded a high-profile illegal arms export scheme with two United States citizen partners was sentenced yesterday to 150 months in prison and three years probation for violating the Arms Export Control Act.

Arif Ali Durrani was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Larry A. Burns on charges stemming from an extensive investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) that began in 2004.

In March 2006, a federal jury in San Diego found Durrani guilty of multiple violations of the Arms Export Control Act, including four counts of exporting defense articles without a license and one count of conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States.

“By vigilantly pursuing illegal arms dealers, particularly those with a history of selling U.S. military hardware to state sponsors of terrorism, ICE is helping to keep sensitive technology from falling into the wrong hands,” said Mike Unzueta, special agent in charge for the ICE office of investigations in San Diego. “Durrani is clearly an enemy of the United States and the sentencing judge saw that too.”

The evidence presented during Durrani’s trial established that the Pakistani national conspired with two Southern California arms dealers to illegally export millions of dollars in military aircraft parts from the United States to the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, and Belgium, including some parts that were destined for Iran.

Durrani most recently resided in Rosarito Beach, Mexico, a beach community near the San Diego/Baja California border. His two co-conspirators, retired Navy officer George Budenz, 60, and Richard Tobey, 38, resided in Southern California. Both men pleaded guilty in federal court to violating the Arms Control Export Act and are awaiting sentencing.

The illegal exports included temperature control amplifiers for the General Electric J85 turbine engine used on the F-5 fighter and other military aircraft; an afterburner hydraulic actuator for the J85 engine; and 1st Stage Turbine Nozzles for the Honeywell T55 engine used on the Chinook military helicopter.

Durrani was previously convicted in 1987 of violating the Arms Export Control Act by illegally exporting HAWK missile system components from the United States. After serving his criminal sentence he was deported from the United States in the late 1990s. Ultimately, he took up residence in Rosarito Beach and began orchestrating his illegal export business from Mexico."

Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Iraqi has assumed control of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network, according to a statement.

The deputy leader of the Iraq jihad umbrella group, the Mujahideen Shura Council of Iraq, issued a message saying that it would continue with business as normal.

It indicates that Rahman has taken over effective control of the network until a successor is named.

It is thought that an Egyptian-born lieutenant, known as Abu al-Masri, will eventually assume the leadership role.

Hi all,

Just an FYI, just saw an alert on FoxNews stating that a new tape from Zawahiri will be shown on Al Jazeera today. He doesn't talk about the death of Zarqawi, so it's at least a day or two old.

Also on FoxNews, a Major General Caldwell is stating that Zarqawi was alive and conscience when troops arrived at the bombing site. Imagine finding that a*hole still breathing. Hope someone had the pleasure of helping him stop breathing. LOL

Al Jazeera to air video tape from Zawahri
Fri Jun 9, 2006 7:57am ET

DUBAI (Reuters) - Al Jazeera television said on Friday it would air a new video tape from Al Qaeda's second-in-command Ayman al Zawahri.

Al Jazeera said that in the tape Zawahri speaks about the Palestinian referendum, the Darfur crisis and Egyptian judges.

In April, Zawahri said hundreds of suicide bombers had "broken America's back" in three years of war in Iraq.

Per FOXNews: al-zawahiri on new video tape; does not mention al-zarqawi's death (not surprising). Basically sounds like a discourse telling the jihadis to continue their jihad in Iraq and everywhere.

Zawahiri: Palestine's liberation is the duty of every Muslim

Aljazeera has aired a videotape in which al-Qaeda number two, Ayman al-Zawahiri, urges Palestinians to reject the referendum proposed by Mahmud Abbas, the Palestinian president.

"I call upon them to reject any referendum on Palestine, because Palestine is not for bargaining or bidding," al-Zawahri said, addressing Muslims in general, in the video telecast on Friday.

"Palestine was a land of Islam, and its liberation is the duty of every Muslim."

Mentioning armed Muslim fighters, prisoners and their families, al-Zawahiri said: "I call upon Muslims everywhere to support the brothers in Palestine."

Wearing a white turban and tunic, al-Qaeda's deput leader appeared against a black background. He repeatedly waved his right hand and pointed his finger in a gesture of admonishment.

He also praised Abu Musab al-Zarqawi but did not mention his death, suggesting it was made earlier.

Aljazeera said that the tape was made before the announcement of al-Zarqawi's death, because al-Zawahiri praised the al-Qaida in Iraq leader's efforts to confront US-led forces in Iraq.

"God bless the prophet of Islam in Iraq, the persistent hero of Islam, the Holy Warriors Abu Musab al-Zarqawi," al-Zawahiri said.

He sent greetings to the Shura Council of Mujahedeen in Iraq and anti-US fighters, "who are confronting Crusaders and their apostate aids and the merchants of religion".

Al-Zawahiri, who has focused on political issues before in his tapes, also gave his opinions on the campaign by a group of Egyptian judges for the independence of the judiciary, and the situation in Darfur, west Sudan.

U.S. warns of possible terror threats to Americans in China
The Associated Press, June 9, 2006

The U.S. government warned Friday of possible terrorist threats to American interests and places where Americans gather in China, particularly in major cities.

The notice, posted on the Web site of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and transmitted by e-mail to American citizens, said the warning was based on unconfirmed information.

It said American interests in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou may be at higher risk, along with restaurants, places of worship, schools and other places where Americans gather.

Embassy spokeswoman Sheila Paskman said the possible threats were specific to China and not part of a larger regional or worldwide alert.

"This is China-specific," she said, declining to elaborate.

Americans were not being urged to alter their travel plans or normal business, she said.

"This particular notice is simply asking people to be aware of threats," she said.

Although China has battled sporadic violence from separatist Muslims in its northwestern province bordering Central Asia, the country has largely escaped terrorism by international groups.

The United States has issued similar alerts previously and Friday's follows the killing of Iraq's most-wanted terrorist, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, by a U.S. airstrike.

In November, the embassy warned of a possible terrorist threat against luxury hotels in Beijing. It retracted that warning a day later, saying Chinese authorities concluded the source of the information was not credible.

Yep...I have seen Berg quite a few times since yesterday as well. IMHO...he is getting as much MSM face time as possible...just like get publicity for his own causes (running for a political office in Berg's case)...and they both make me ill because they are getting this MSM time based on the deaths of their children.

Record Meteorite Hit Norway (6/7/06)

The map shows the meteorite's direction of fall (the arrow) and the possible impact area over Troms and Finnmark counties.

As Wednesday morning dawned, northern Norway was hit with an impact comparable to the atomic bomb used on Hiroshima. Peter Bruvold witnessed the meteorite streaking across the night sky.

At around 2:05 a.m. on Wednesday, residents of the northern part of Troms and the western areas of Finnmark could clearly see a ball of fire taking several seconds to travel across the sky.

A few minutes later an impact could be heard and geophysics and seismology research foundation NORSAR registered a powerful sound and seismic disturbances at 02:13.25 a.m. at their station in Karasjok.....

Special Terrorism Summary - The Death Of Al Zarqawi

Given that we’ve had a day to revel in the death of an earthly expression of evil, lets put the events into perspective and context to see how this reflects upon the US’s WOT.

The Beginning of the End
The coalition forces have had a special task force of special operations units from all branches of the US service, British, Iraqi and even possibly Israeli Mossad and Jordanian help. Initial successes against AQ in Iraq forced Al Zarqawi to the western areas adjacent to Syria. With the fight continuing to go bad, he chose to return to the Bagdad area to better manage and control attacks against Coalition and Shia targets. To maintain his high profile as the leader of AQ in Iraq, he was forced to move constantly from safehouse to safehouse.

Al Zarqawi’s leadership started to hit the rocks a little over a year ago when Iraqi insurgents who were allied to him, started to oppose the overwhelming number of foreign jihadists coming into Iraq and taking over the campaign. Former Baathists and Sunni leaders were getting the picture that a new Iraqi government was the way to go and the quickest way to get the coalition forces out of the country. It was during the series of elections leading up to today’s Iraqi government that Al Zarqawi began to try to start a Sunni – Shia civil war. While there were many Shia willing to mix it up (Sadr being one of them), the Shia leadership has managed to restrain their populace. Sunni terror leaders soon began to recognize the folly of picking a fight with the Shia, whom severely outnumber them. Civilian tips to Coalition and Iraqi forces began to increase and more and more terrorists were thwarted (captured or killed). Success built upon success and soon intelligence networks were enhanced, providing even more actionable tips and info.

Al Zarqawi didn’t help his cause very much. Beginning with his attacks in Jordan on hotels, including a wedding reception, his Iraqi hosts began to sour even more on him. Eventually, one main jihadist organization actually announced that he was replaced as overall commander. Whether this was an internal PR effort to stop the increasing friction between indigenous Iraqi insurgents and AQ is not sure. What is certain is that he lost a lot of support by the populace and intelligence tips increased substantially. This wealth of intel permitted the special operations forces to begin to tighten the net around Al Zarqawi.

After a period of laying low, Al Zarqawi began to send out public messages again, via audio and video tapes and written media. These seemed to be in conjunction with increased messages from OBL and Ayman al-Zawahri. It seems that it was also during this time frame that Al Zarqawi began to move his operations back into the Bagdad area from the western proviences.

Over the past 6 – 8 months, special operations forces continued to close in. During this time period many senior AQ-Iraq leaders were captured and killed. Intelligence was also obtained from the raids of safehouses which permitted further targeting and tracking of individuals close to Al Zarqawi. With the loss of experienced lieutenants, those selected to replace them were more careless and brutial. With the slaying of innocents in marketplaces, hijacking of school buses and murder of children, public support vaporized for Al Zarqawi and other foreign jihadists, increasing actionable intelligence.

End Game
Al Zarqawi worked repaint himself as the public leader of the insurgency in Iraq. This effort was apparently supported by OBL himself, who declared that Al Zarqawi was a ‘prince’ of AQ. The attacks against the Shia increased significantly and more directly. Al Zarqawi was suspected of being behind the attack on the Shia shrine earlier this year.

In a remarkably prophetic observation, the following was posted Wednesday, June 7th at
June 7, 2006: The relationship between terrorist leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi and and the mainline al Qaeda leadership continues to deteriorate. Zarqawi's recent audio messages have not only attacked the U.S. and the Shia-dominated government in Iraq, but also Iran. He's even claiming that the U.S., Iran, and Shia in general, are in cahoots to destroy Islam. He has also called for continued attacks against Shia.

Except for his verbal attacks on the U.S. and the Iraqi government, he is almost totally distanced himself from the central leadership. Other al Qaeda leaders have been trying to down play anti-Iranian and anti-Shia rhetoric, and have been strongly discouraging attacks on civilians.

Given that Zarqawi has become a loose cannon and that his actions are handicapping Al Qaeda's efforts, it seems reasonable to expect that an accident may befall him at some point in the near future. If handled right it can be made to look like he went out in a blaze of glory fighting American troops or that he was foully murdered. Either way, al Qaeda gets rid of a problem and gains another "martyr."

Initial press releases from Iraq indicated that intelligence leading to Thursday’s event came from within Al Zarqawi’s organization. This may be part of the final targeting. However, additional targeting information apparently came from Jordan through the interception of communications between Al Zarqawi and family in Jordan. Additionally, intelligence was tracking his spiritual mentor who’s movements further confirmed Al Zarqawi’s location. Intelligence was converging and late Wednesday, June 8th, Al Zarqawi was physically observed entering the safe house is Baqouba is 35 miles northeast of Baghdad.

The Strike
News reports have made it clear that with the 100% confirmation of Al Zarqawi’s presence in the safe house (aka ALPHA WHISKEY ROMEO – Allah’s waiting room), two F-16s dropped 500 lb bombs. Current news reports relate that Al Zarqawi was still alive when Coalition troops reached the building, but died shortly thereafter. We can rest assured that Al Zarqawi did not die a quick, painless death. Death was likely the result of over pressure caused by the explosion. Normal air pressure is 17 lbs per square inch, a bomb generates thousands of times that. As the pressure wave hit Al Zarqawi, two main body cavities were affected – the lungs and sinuses. The chest collapsed on the lungs, essentially ripping them from the arteries feeding blood to and from the heart. The sinuses too collapsed, resulting in the swelling of the face. Starved of oxygenated blood and bleeding to death internally, Al Zarqawi could only lay and wait.

After mumbling something indistinguishable and short, he tried one last time to try to get away by rolling off the stretcher. However, his time ran out and he died a short time thereafter.

Follow Through
Coalition forces have conducted 39 raids late Thursday and early Friday based on information gleaned from searches in the hours after Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's death. These raids were reported targeted the many lieutenants and leaders that were being tracked in an effort to ultimately locate al-Zarqawi's. These raids are providing a treasure trove of intelligence that will permit even more specific strikes against AQ in Iraq.

Aftermath and Future
Friday, Al-Jazeera network broadcast a video by al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri. The tape apparently was made before the announcement Zawahri states “ God bless the prophet of Islam in Iraq, the persistent hero of Islam, the Holy Warrior Abu Musab al-Zarqawi".

The death of Al Zarqawi will have a complex effect on the insurgency in Iraq. He was increasingly being pushed out of the leadership and scorned by the locals. As a figure head, he was great for recruiting jihadists and is already considered a martyr by Hamas and Palestinians. Replacement by someone with similar charisma, expertise and experience will be difficult.
Therefore, direct impacts will be to a degree minimal. However, it is the intelligence bounty seized in the aftermath that is already ripping apart the internals of AQ-Iraq. This will severely cripple AQ’s future operations as leaders and cells have to go to ground to avoid detection and capture/death while they regroup.
Short term violence will spike as revenge attacks take place. However, these will lack coordination, OPSEC and focused targeting, exposing more of AQ infrastructure. Filling this void will be the Iraqi nationalist insurgents. However, they continue to be more inclined to begin to work with the government, especially since it appears that the Sunni, Shia and Kurd elements are working together. Talks have been in progress with some of these insurgent groups already.

Just one last article on Berg.

WILMINGTON -- Long before the sun came up Thursday, Michael Berg began answering the same question he would be asked all day long: What does he think of the death of terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi?

Berg, 61, is the father of Nicholas Berg, whose beheading by al-Zarqawi's soldiers May 7, 2004, was depicted in a graphic and widely distributed video. A year after their son's death, Berg and his wife, Suzanne, moved to Wilmington from West Chester, Pa.

Berg's personal connection to al-Zarqawi put him in high demand with reporters Thursday morning. They found him at the Ninth Ward home of his congressional campaign manager, John Atkeison.

By 9 a.m., television crews were milling around Atkeison's front porch, their satellite trucks idling on the narrow streets. Orange electrical cords snaked across the sidewalk, up the concrete steps, under the aluminum screen door and into Atkeison's house.

If they didn't know Berg, his comments may have surprised them.

Inside, Berg stood in front of Atkeison's bookcase, where one of his campaign posters was taped to a shelf lined with books about global climate change, spirituality and politics. Berg had been talking to reporters since one awakened him at 4:37 a.m. with a phone call to tell him of al-Zarqawi's death.

As he talks, campaign helper Madeline Perri arrives with bags of bagels, napkins and coffee cups. Her job, she explains, is to keep everyone fed.

" Atkeison steps onto his tiny front porch where reporters and their crews have set up cameras and microphones for Berg's next appearance. He tapes a campaign sign on the pillar behind the spot where Berg is supposed to stand.

"This has to be in every shot or you're going to be cut off," Atkeison tells the crews. "Everybody clear? And I'm going to be checking."...
