The former American president, Jimmy Carter, has said that the United States should begin talks with Iran without preconditions.
Mr Carter believes prerequisites could present the Iranian Government with too great an impediment to overcome.
His comments are significant, given that he was the president when US relations with Iran hit an all-time low.
He witnessed the Iranian revolution and the seizure of the American Embassy in Tehran in 1979.
He struggled for 444 days to release the US Embassy staff held hostage.
A failed rescue attempt led by the US military brought about the resignation of his secretary of state.
It was the crisis that has scarred relations between the two countries ever since.
But Mr Carter thinks attempts to improve relations should have started long ago.
And he believes that this administration's offer to sit down and talk on conditions that Iran gives up its uranium enrichment program may not be enough.
I think we should do everything Carter says about Iran. The last time he was in charge, our next president was Reagan.

I can't think of anything better that proves that Carter was the worst president, ever. His brain cells were mutated then and even more so now.
Carter should offer to go to Tehran and allow them to stone him in the soccer stadium. Maybe that would be ENOUGH?
Carter lost me with the Panama Canal giveaway. Carter has never cared about anything but getting cash for himself and his family. And I laugh every time I see that nutcase with his eyebrows flying up and down hammering for 10 minutes in front of the cameras on some house for some poor slob. Then after that getting in to a private jet and going back to his life of pampering. Carter and his family have had the best of the best. His concern for the poor or whatever is just a con.
I think Bush should send Jimmy over there. Let him flop about for a while.
We really ought to listen to Carter's "significant" comments.
His thoughts about negotiation have borne such great fruit in the past, like how well he managed his intervention in North Korea in 1992 or thereabouts to help rid the world of that threat. The way he helped prolong the Cold War by appeasing the Soviet Union before that was simply wonderful, too.

When it comes to negotiation, the right thing to do is the opposite of anything Carter suggests.
It's non negotiable Jimmy. Iran must give up its uranium enrichment program.
Carter giving advice on Iran is like the captain of the Titanic giving iceberg avoidance lessons.
Does anyone remember when Carter, candidate for POTUS, mentioned Admiral Elmo Zumwalt as a reference in discussing his qualifications for the job? Zumwalt responded shortly afterward that he didn't even remember a Jimmy Carter.
He witnessed it? He witnessed it?
Sheesh, his weakness was a MAJOR factor in the genesis of it.
He should just shut up about this. He is the least qualified person in the world to be giving advice about it.
Sounds like Mr. Carter knows everything and understands nothing.
