A Startling Statistic at UCLA .. only 96 blacks are expected in this fall's freshman class.
LA Times ^ | 6/3/06 | Rebecca Trounson

Posted on 06/03/2006 5:25:16 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

This fall 4,852 freshmen are expected to enroll at UCLA, but only 96, or 2%, are African American — the lowest figure in decades and a growing concern at the Westwood campus.

For several years, students, professors and administrators at UCLA have watched with discouragement as the numbers of black students declined. But the new figures, released this week, have shocked many on campus and prompted school leaders to declare the situation a crisis.

UCLA — which boasts such storied black alumni as Jackie Robinson, Tom Bradley and Ralph Bunche, and is in a county that is 9.8% African American — now has a lower percentage of black freshmen than either crosstown rival USC or UC Berkeley, the school often considered its top competitor within the UC system.

The 96 figure — down by 20 students from last year — is the lowest for incoming African American freshmen since at least 1973. ...

--snip--

"Clearly, we're going to have to meet this crisis by redoubling our efforts, which have not yielded the results we'd like to see," said Chancellor Albert Carnesale, who met Friday with a delegation of undergraduates upset about the situation.

In a telephone interview before the meeting, Carnesale described the preliminary numbers for black freshmen as "a great disappointment" and said that UCLA has been trying for years to boost those levels, within the limits allowed by law.

He and other officials at UCLA and elsewhere said the problem of attracting, admitting and enrolling qualified black students is found at competitive universities across the country and that its causes are complex. In California, the problem is rooted partly in the restrictions placed on the state's public colleges and institutions by Proposition 209, the 1996 voter initiative that banned consideration of race and gender in admissions and hiring.

The statistics are sad, but at least they are real. They show us what we have to do, which is work on the quality of our high schools, and work on the kids to both get them ready for college, and get them to want it.

Affirmative action doesn't really solve the problem, it masks the problem. Get rid of affirmative action, and you can't ignore the problem any more, you have to admit it and deal with it.

Why, we must then randomly deliver diploma's to the 'dis-enfranchised' in California to make up for this travesty. It's all "Whitey's" fault! Da Man is keeping the brothers down! Power to the People.

Obviously, lowering standards so that blacks can get degree's isn't working well enough. It has got to be a conspiracy, because we all know that all cultures are inherently equal; it takes a village to raise a child, and all men (especially minorities) deserve the same chance in life (regardless how hard they prepare themselves). How else can we all be equal?

Easy solution:

Keep the Asians Out

Just because they are smart, work hard, study, keep their noses clean and respect family values, why should they get more then 50% of the admissions?

And yes, I am being sarcastic.

Oh, yeah, not that is was racist or anything to pick blacks over other students, no way./ SAR If the only way they can get blacks who are qualified is to phony up the records too bad.

I would like to know why they actually give a crap who attends their college as long as someone does. Enrollment of white males is way down from what it is used to be, not just as UCLA but at all colleges, I don't see them having a fit about that.

No wonder 100% of the democrats in Washington send their children to private schools. But God forbid a California black child would have a voucher or school choice. No cannot allow black children the same options we demand, say the democrats. Can't have these uppity blacks getting any ideas.

Just another day on the democrat party plantation.

For what it's worth, cultural factors work against many blacks going to college, and the people in charge of our politically correct institutions have done nothing to improve matters. In fact, they seem to have deliberately worked to hold blacks down on the welfare plantation, where their votes can be counted on. Blacks from well-educated, middle-class families are a different matter, but they are still a minority.

Young people don't take an interest in intellectual matters unless their parents or their peers encourage them to. A majority of blacks (and an increasing number of whites) come from broken homes and hang out with other children who share their lack of interest in anything intellectual.

I have sat on admissions committees for graduate school. There was always very hot competition for the few highly qualified black applicants. I remember that we offered a big scholarship to one highly qualified candidate, but Harvard offered a much bigger one.

Pat Moynihan saw the broken homes and the dysfunctional families coming, many years ago, but LBJ decided that there was more political advantage in encouraging blacks to remain on the Democrat plantation, and that has been their political policy ever since.

In my experience, it's not that blacks are any less intelligent. It's just that, with obvious exceptions, they have no motivation to be interested in academic matters, school or college.

How can you find what ain't there, dumba$$?? And this is in California where money is spent like water, poured down the drain of public education. If, after all these years of their multitude of expensive programs and social experiments, they haven't figured out the basics of student success, then there is truly no hope for them.

Or maybe the majority of black high school students are now Conservative Republicans and are choosing to stay away from our most liberal universities, i.e. the pits of hell.

which is work on the quality of our high elementary schools

The lower-achieving students are far behind before they get to high school. Dr. John Ogbu (may he rest in peace) did a great study of how black students are allowed, or even encouraged, to fall behind white students as early as 3rd grade.

"Other factors include the socioeconomic inequities that undermine elementary and high school education in California and elsewhere, with minority students disproportionately affected because they often attend schools with fewer resources, including less-qualified teachers and fewer counselors."

I am so tired of this worn-out excuse. My high school was 40% black. It was also the most well-funded public high school in the state with some of the best technology a school could offer. We had 1 black person finish in the top 20% of our high school class in 20 years.

There's a problem, alright, but blaming this on the schools isn't going to cut it.

I'll also add that the Memphis public schools start out teachers at about $14,000 higher than the state average through hazard pay. The fact that they have to offer that displays another problem.

Don't forget pro athletes! Heaven forbid the role models were Colin Powell, Condoleza Rice, or those who worked hard and didn't expect everything to be handed to them. Education is truly the only way out and even though it is handed to kids of all flavors free of charge, far too many choose to squander it - and their lives.

No, they're not. The cause is that black kids who don't act like ghetto thugs or like crack whores are ridiculed, beaten up, ostracized, and even gunned down by their peers for acting "white".. You can't fix the problem until you admit what it is.

UCLA — which boasts such storied black alumni as Jackie Robinson, Tom Bradley and Ralph Bunche, and is in a county that is 9.8% African American

Though many students come from LA county, UCLA is not a county school. As long as Howard University and the many other separate but equal schools continue to enroll nearly 100 percent black students, that will reduce the number available to join us in the general population. A minority friend of mine back in 1970 failed to do well enough in HS and on the SAT for admission to UCLA. He aced the science and math courses he took at Mt. SAC and I've no doubt he was able to later transfer to the four-year school.

Not to mention the fact that asians are entering UCLA at a rate way ABOVE their proportions in California society.

That's gotta stop, obviously.

I have a friend whose daughter was educated during her elementary/middle school years at a private Christian school. When she transferred to the public high school, you wouldn't believe the bs she got from the other black kids for having white friends and doing well. Some of these idiots were from middle class families, one of whom was the daughter of a public school music teacher with a dad who was a cop.

That girl should have known better. Why she didn't, I'm not sure.
