Spam king settles with Texas, Microsoft
Hindustan Times ^ | June 4, 2006

One of the world's most notorious spammers has settled lawsuits with the state of Texas and Microsoft Corp that cost him at least $1 million, took away most of his assets and forced him to stop sending the nuisance e-mails. Ryan Pitylak, 24, who graduated from the University of Texas last month, has admitted sending 25 million e-mails every day at the height of his spamming operation in 2004.

At one time, Pitylak was listed as the fourth-worst spammer in the world by the Spamhaus Project, a London-based international clearinghouse that tracks spammers and works closely with law enforcement officials.

The civil settlements were both reached last month in federal court.

As part of the settlement with Microsoft, Pitylak promised never again to send out false, misleading or unsolicited commercial e-mails.

Pitylak, who plans to help Internet companies fight spam, said he would sell his $430,000 house and a 2005 BMW to help pay his fines and legal bills.

In other words, the risks were (are) negligible. It's not like competing with the Hell's Angels in the meth distribution business!

"... $430,000 house and a 2005 BMW"

That's all?

Skip tar, feathers and baseball bat and make him spend the rest of his life removing spam from inboxes and removing spam-carried viruses from computers. (snarls)

How about smeared with honey and staked to a Texas fire ant hill?

I am glad some spammer was made to pay. Too bad not much can be done about foreign spammers.

Of course, he WOULD be a T-sipper. They ought to cover him in honey, bread and steaks and put him in the middle of a fire ant hill.

Hey! Hey! Hey! This is a white collar crime. It's not like he forcibly broke into anyones homes or anything . . . . well . maybe it is. Okay, warm up the tar and pluck the chickens.

Most all 'foreign' spammers are based in the US, they just use machines in other countries to send the emails.

Just punishment is to make him sit in the live audience for Oprah and The view.

If he is from Texas only let him eat picante salsa made in NEW YORK CITY.

Make a workout video with Richard Simmons.

Sounds OK, but poison the honey first. I am adamantly against feeding fire ants -- unless it is a poison bait like Amdro, etc.

A few years in a texas state prison or castration would start to get the attention of some people. I have no sympathy for these serial spammers. They know they are breaking the law just as brazenly as illegal aliens and drug dealers do. There is no grey area when you are sending out tens of millions of emails to people to whom you have no knowledge, connect, consent or even names of.

I suppose we'd have to sue the now impoverished SOB to get any relief for the damage Spam does to us. THe only satisfaction we get is the knowledge that he is out of business, at least for a while.

Force him to survive on this for a while. FWIW I can't believe no one thought of this before I did!

It depends on if his address is published on the Web.

A year ago, a truly heartwarming story came out of Russia.

A notorious spammer was found bludgeoned to death in his office.

It's a modest start.
