The New York Times reports that Wal-Mart, the bane of all limousine liberals and aging hippies, has entered the "crunchy granola" market:
Beginning later this year, Wal-Mart plans to roll out a complete selection of organic foods food certified by the U.S.D.A. to have been grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers in its nearly 4,000 stores. Just as significant, the company says it will price all this organic food at an eye-poppingly tiny premium over its already-cheap conventional food: the organic Cocoa Puffs and Oreos will cost only 10 percent more than the conventional kind. Organic food will soon be available to the tens of millions of Americans who now cannot afford it indeed, who have little or no idea what the term even means. Organic food, which represents merely 2.5 percent of America's half-trillion-dollar food economy, is about to go mainstream.
With organic food about to become as "mainstream" and "middle America" as Ford Explorers, Kraft singles and "American Idol," how long before the so-called "elites" find it no longer has the same "counterculture" appeal as Volvos, brie and NPR?
I refust to buy or eat the garbage.
Better yet, grow your own.
Mostly because it is grown locally.
Organic processed food is mostly a rip-off.
Food is different. Once you taste real bread it is hard to eat Wonder Bread.
True, but you can eat whole wheat bread without it having to be "organic."

Organic foods are just as tasty as the regular stuff.
So I buy whatever is cheapest.
As one who is using diet as "complementary medicine" to fight cancer, eating organic food has nothing to do with being "elite".

I guess I grew up with organic milk. My daddy was a dairy farmer.
I have always hated the taste of skim milk and then I tried organic skim and it tastes so much better and shelf life is longer.....go figure....

I eat free-range poultry....I kill it in the wild (turkeys, pheasants, grouse, doves, etc)

That's a big 10-4. Then there are those that still eat that crap....and tear off the crusts! Like eating dried paste.
Whole wheat is not enough. It can still have additives and the original grain might be of inferior quality.
The real bread contains flour, leaven or yeast, water and salt. No more, not less.
If you try to make your own bread you will SEE that organic flour is much better. The dough grows as it should for example.
Government agencies are not to be trusted with the certification as they will side with big business. They will play games to redefine "organic" or "natural" labels.
The reason it lasts longer is that it is ultra-pasturized and in a container that keeps longer.
What I really want is for milk companies to start making "premium milk" that is, milk that has not been cooked to death with the quick pasteurization process.
Yes, it would be more expensive but the taste and mouth feel of slow pasteurized milk can not be beat.
We have premium everything else why not premium milk?

I was actually thinking recently, that I wonder how many people are going to start really looking for more organic food (I'm thinking in terms of meat without hormones, etc). And then I read this article. If Walmart is going to carry it, there must be a fairly large interest.
I don't see this as a bad thing. I could care less what the elites want, but I'm really becoming alarmed at some of what we consume, not to mention what we feed our kids.
Yeah....it just kind of slides through, picking nothing up on its way.....or for that matter, leaving anything nutritional either.
I have to admit, that having grown up on wonderbread, I really like plain white bread toast. However, I don't eat it anymore. And, home made bread is really pretty easy to make, and makes you feel pretty smug and self sufficient.
It would no be if Walmart intentions (and resolve) were honest. Big if.
A trip through an organic foods market is better than going to a movie. Up the Rocky Mountain front range, there are Whole Foods Markets and Wild Oats Markets. We stopped in one a while back to pick up some bulk food that my wife wanted, as it was convenient, and surprisingly their bulk items cost less than packaged items where we live. The people in that store, in their ponytails and birkenstock sandals, were reeking of not having bathed in a while. They carried on conversations that made no sense whatsoever, and sat in the deli eating some unidentifiable mess that looked like it had been left by an ill pet.
Worse yet, those people are allowed to vote.

Not only tastes better, but is better for you too. I remember reading that strawberries, in particular, absorb a high percentage of pesticides so it is advised to buy them organic.
My daddy wasn't a dairy farmer but when I was growing up we drank our own milk from Suzie our cow. Now I drink Promise Land Milk all natural no hormones! Yum! I have been a huge mild drinker all my life and now I am 66 years old and have the bones of a 30 year old as per my doctor.
I understand and if you have an outlet where you get fresh, vine-ripened organic produce you can get that taste and you can get the same taste at roadside stands and pick it yourself farms, because they are ripened on the plant rather than picked green and shipped across the country. I think a lot of people confuse the matter. The real difference is the process not the chemicals or lack thereof.
Most fertilizers are natural substances and are actually safer than manure because you won't get ecoli.
I don't get your drift. Can you spell out what their intentions are? (bear in mind, I don't think making money is evil).

I am afraid that they will play games - they will sell not natural or organic food (to lower cost and increase profit) by changing the definitions and regulations. Their customers will not be able to tell difference.
Also they will ruin some real organic/natural producers by either forcing them of the market or by hooking them on ever lowering price schedule.
Still the true organic/natural stores will survive as their customer base will not give up.
Organic food has become a huge market, and business is listening. The market driven economy does work sometimes. "Whole Foods" (organic grocery chain) has seen phenomenal growth and earnings. The ONLY way it will work, however, is if the consumer has confidence in the organic products being sold. Walmart has a big hill to climb in that dept., and no, I won't be buying organic from Walmart.
I agree with some posters, the minute the gov or big business gets involved, the integrity of the term "organic" could become compromised.
They are bred especially for a large size and length of shelf life, that is why they have no taste.
I prefer alpine berries when I can get them. Small and sweet and oh so good.
I pick and choose. If the organic is not horribly overpriced and looks more appealing than the non-organic, highly processed, chemical laden stuff, I go with the organic. I figure it cant hurt. After all I put the high-test gas and best oil in my car. Dont I want to do the same for my engine?

With all the Range Rovers and Porche SUVs I see in the parking lot of the Whole Foods market near me,I think she's on to something!
Fortunately the non-government certifications and and informal network will be in place. Those who eat natural/organic food now will not be fooled.

We enter a day when organic foods become mainstream, and those who eat what they eat to be righteous will find a way to differentiate what they eat from what the masses eat.
I shop sometimes at organic type food stores. I have some products I really like, and they sell some stuff in bulk.
I know what A. Pole means about good bread. I've baked my own from time to time, (but I do often use more elaborate recipes than the one recommended, occasionally including things like milk or eggs or chopped nuts or other good stuff).
But there are people who are unhappy that these things might be going mainstream. Why?
Interesting the psychology of that particular tidbit.
