The US could ban the import of music in any form from Russia I guess. Fat chance but you never know how many lobbyists are working for the RIAA right now.
They responded that they would indeed launch an investigation.
During the investigation the Prosecutors Office found that the AllofMP3.com owners in fact did distribute music recordings via the online resource. However, the holder of right for these recordings did not authorize to distribute them for commercial purposes.
At the same time, the Prosecutor found that the Russian Law on copyright does not qualify Internet in legal terms, whereas the authors’ property rights are extended to distribution of copies of their works by any means. Along with that, the Prosecutor says that from judicial point of view, distribution of any works via Internet is impossible because it would be a digital transfer, whereas the current Russian legislation necessitates corporeal transfer of works only.
Besides that, the Prosecutor concluded that, distribution of works does not result in making a new copy of the work, but only creates conditions for being utilized by end consumer. On these grounds, the Prosecutor’s Office in Moscow’s South-Western district rejected initiation of a criminal case against the Internet resource officials due to absence of corpus delicti.
So, essentially, the RIAA was told..."tough luck".

I have to admit I'm not qualified to explain these things, other than what newspaper articles describe (as that's where I get my information).
And with the law (in Russia or in the U.S.) the "devil is in the details" it seems. Thank goodness for the vagaries of the law, from country to country. That's what keeps things interesting and us in music (for now, at least...).

You know, I thought and thought about what bit rate I wanted to download when I first started doing it. I wondered what would be good enough and yet, not too bad -- without going completelly to lossless.
I finally picked the bit rate of 320kbps, too. I figured it would be a good and balanced point, without going to complete lossless.
You know, on their web site, somewhere in those FAQs, they've got a great explanation of the different formats and how it works for going from analog sounds to digital signals and what those different codecs do. I thought I would copy it down. It was a great reading it.
BUT, here I've been with them for over three years and haven't gone too much over $100 and I see I'm probably way behind others who have really been stocking up. I guess I'll have to get on the stick and really go at the downloading -- because I fear that one of these days someone will get to those Russian legislators and something will change in their law.
