Baby left for dead is all grown up She'll graduate high school a few miles from site of her rescue
SF Gate/San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Tuesday, June 6, 2006 | Diana Walsh, Chronicle Staff Writer

The temperature outside on the night of Dec. 30, 1987, was 45 and dropping. Cold for most anyone, but perilous for a newborn baby girl wrapped in a towel and stuffed in a brown paper bag like trash.

She probably wasn't meant to be found alive.

When Steve Gibbons, a California Highway Patrol officer, pulled off Interstate 280 to stop and stretch his legs, she was just hours old. Her temperature had plummeted to a dangerous 90 degrees. If she had been there much longer, she would have died near the intersection of Cañada and Edgewood roads in Redwood City.

But Gibbons heard the baby's cry.

Now the abandoned infant has grown up. Ashley Wyrick, 18, will graduate Friday from Sequoia High School, 4 miles from where she was left in the bag. She says she sometimes wonders why she was set by the side of the road and where her biological mother might be. But in her mind, it was fate.

Well, God bless her. I wonder if the biological mother experienced any remorse, or follows her progress?

I agree with your sentiment, but anyone who can put a baby in a bag on the side of the road probably doesn't care or is dead. This is a fortunate human being.

Ok, so the police office just happened to stop at that particular spot to stretch his legs in the middle of the night and she just happened to cry loud enough for him to hear and low and behold he finds a baby. Then the adopted parents get a divorce when she's still very little and dad gets custody. And amazingly, she looks just like her adopted sister's kids. Very fishy.

Lets hope the young girl never finds her mother.

There would be the movie rights and, book offers, and this would enrich the mothers world, in which see surly doesn't deserve.

A mother that would do this to a child has to be dead inside, no soul, no emotions what so ever toward human life.

Wild animals have more care for their offspring then some humans.

Oh my gosh what a wonderful story!!! This is the second one I've read on Freerepublic this morning. As I told my son, who is currently reading the article about the boy who blew the roof off of his family's home, this is most definately an old lady "cry me a river" of sentiment story.

Wow, what a story. I hope this young lady makes the most of her life--and that her biological mother has repented of her horribly wicked act.

"It makes me feel like I'm here for a reason. I'm here to do something with my life,'' said Ashley, who will attend the University of Arizona in the fall on a scholarship. "I'm not here to sit around and cry and waste my time thinking about what happened to me.''

Wow ~The world's a better place with Ashley in it.

This story is an example of people who were close to being aborted who grew up to be a wonderful person. Many on the left would have argued to have her killed in the womb.

One wonders if, late at night, this young lady can hear the whispering noise from the angel she surely has been watching over her.

Excellent story, and a happy one at that. However, it highlights what a pi$$-poor job the state of CA did in placing this child. The father seemed to really love her, but for the state to place this child into the described 'stormy relationship' was beyond the pale. There is no mention of the 'mother' whatsoever after the fathers death. Very strange.

Well, even reputable adoptions agencies can place babies in bad marriges.

I have personal experiance with this. It's kinda personal, I'd kinda not like to give out a lot of details.
