PHOENIX - Gov. Janet Napolitano vetoed a bill Tuesday that would have drawn Arizona deeper into the fight against illegal immigration by making it a crime for illegal immigrants to be in the state.
It was the first-term governor's 115th veto, a record for Arizona. The GOP-dominated Legislature has yet to override any of the Democrat's vetoes.
The vetoed bill also would have taken a tougher approach toward employers who hire illegal immigrants, provided money for local police to arrest immigrants and expanded the list of government benefits denied to immigrants.
"It offers no constructive new ideas and instead is filled with unworkable or unconstitutional provisions that I have previously objected to or vetoed," Napolitano wrote in a letter to lawmakers.
Napolitano had warned legislative leaders she would veto the bill if it included criminalization provisions.
The previous Arizona veto record of 114 was established by Democrat Bruce Babbitt, according to figures compiled by the Arizona Capitol Times newspaper. However, Babbitt cast his 114 vetoes in just under nine years in office, while Napolitano has yet to finish the four-year term she began in 2003.
Napolitano is running for re-election this year. She enjoys strong poll ratings, and several prominent Republicans decided against challenging her.

Napolitano to GOP legislature: Drop Dead
Hey Bush! All you have to do is sign your name and veto! Hopefully signing your name isn't too hard, HUH George?!
Napolitano to GOP legislature: Drop Dead
waddya expect, she's a female dem from n.y....
If Matt Salmon hadn't been such a worthless candidate for governor, she would've been just another Democrat also-ran in Arizona. And she probably would have moved back to the Bay Area or L.A. or somewhere more homey feeling to the average upscale dyke.
So now she has a bunch of vetoes for Don Goldwater to pound her with. To me, it's his to lose. If the Arizona Republican party can't make a win with Don, they ain't no damn good....
How can you tell an employer not to hire and pay wages to an illegal when the US gov't says states have to provide for their welfare .....
Ain't our govenor special? And her person is supposed to be holding an office of responsibility. Yet, she vetoes a bill that would help the State of Arizona deal with the ILLEGAL INVADERS? Well, Arizonans, shall we re-elect Janet Baby?
Doncha mean carpetMUNCHER ?
She has always been a total power whore.
: )
Yep. Our legislature is no better than, Janet Baby. They won't even pass a drunk-driving bill for fear one of them'll be caught. Doesn't matter how many are killed by drunk drivers in our state. They just don't wanna get caught. And the bunch even had the nerve to ask for a raise...
Clearly the beeytch has sucked all the vetoes out of the White House.
That's going to make some campaign commercial. They can list bill after bill that she has vetoed. Wouldn't have to say another thing, just a list of the bills and a big veto stamp.
I wish she would read the FRACKING State Constitution. Maybe she needs to get her brother, you know the one that appears of FNC to come read it to her and explain it.
"Don't they have recall in Arizona?"
We tried THAT for John McCain back in 04 and it never got enough traction to get off the ground...
Hopefully, there won't be a 3rd party candidate to screw up the Governor's election this year like there was in 04...It took a week to count the late ballots and it was too close to call until the Indian votes all came charging in for Janet (I'll rename Squaw Peak after the first Indian woman killed in Iraq even though I broke laws to do it!)
You can say that again.
Democrats with an "R" behind their name, more commonly known as RINOs.
Janet's got a lot of 'splainin to do.
We have a Republican majority in the AZ legislature but it's not large enough to override a veto.
The Recall McCain effort was going strong in 2001 but was put on hold after 9/11. The www.recallmccain.org website is still there though.
And Arizona elected a communist Governor....what do the expect?
Good thing she is not a federal office holder:
Section 3331. Oath of office
An individual, except the President, elected or appointed to an office of honor or profit in the civil service or uniformed services, shall take the following oath: "I, AB, do solemnly swear or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God." This section does not affect other oaths required by law.
5 U.S.Code § 3331
She's up for reelection in November.
She's out her barn door on her thick patuti if Goldwater can pull it together by then.
If the rest of the State holds what they have, District 24 will deliver the veto proof majority.

I have no intrest in doing that again. I won't take time away from sitting on the Border for that.
Uhhh..you have to have super-majority to overide a veto we don't have a super-majority.
Yeah, really. It is totally nauseating how these people treat State Constitutions as well as the U.S. Constitution. She's just an ACLU commie...
Yes, an ignorant miserable bitch who is hindering procedures to safe guard our borders from not only illegals mexicans but also hindering procedures to keep out Islamic terrorist.
