Wednesday, Jun 07 Rick Kaplan Resigns: "He Has Led MSNBC Through A Period Of Impressive Growth"

"I want to thank Rick for his service to MSNBC," NBC News president Steve Capus said in a message to MSNBC employees at 4pm. "Over the last two and a half years, Rick has been a tireless champion for the network and all the hard work you do each and every day. He has led MSNBC through a period of impressive growth especially in primetime. You, the staff at MSNBC, are enormously dedicated and have built a rock-solid foundation for our future growth. MSNBC has been and continues to be an enormously important asset in the NBC News portfolio.

Soon, I will have an announcement for all of you about MSNBC's new leadership. During this period of transition I will call on the department heads at MSNBC to manage their respective units and report to me."

In an e-mail to all NBC Universal employees, Capus said "the message of this day is a continued commitment by everyone at MSNBC to excellence. The channel has some real momentum behind it now - and we intend to build upon that foundation for an extremely bright future."

Rick Kaplan Resigns: Effective Immediately, President Of MSNBC Steps Down Rick Kaplan's goodbye to MSNBC staffers:

"I want to let you all know that today I'm leaving MSNBC. It is not often in professional life that someone has the opportunity to end his tenure on such a high note. I couldn't be more proud of the progress we've made together over the last 2 and a half years. Together, we've increased MSNBC's viewership 25% in primetime and 19% in dayside. Over just the last year, we've had great success across the board, with Hardball and Countdown coming into their own. All of our primetime programs have improved tremendously in their production and content. Together we had a great election year in '04 and you're poised to improve on that excellence this fall. It truly has been an honor to work with all of you who make up the best team in TV news. My genuine hope is that you continue to grow and build on the momentum we've achieved together at MSNBC."

Mathews and Olberman would be the likely next targets if profitablity is important to the new guy.

Heheheh. Well, it will be inteesting to see who replaces Kaplan. Perhaps the network is going to go in a new direction...which could be more fair and balanced, or go even MORE left.

Rick was the head of CNN and the reason it was nicknamed the Clinton news network.
Rick spend more time in the Lincoln bedroom than Abe and Mary. During the Monica scandal and the war room days the whote house was his weekend home .
The white house visitors records prove that !
He is another DNC flack and Clinonite who was positioned in the media to serve the Clintons ! This move shows how the hillary and bill have fallen out of favor with the mediacrats !

He is a FOB -- Friend of Bill (Clinton) and gets a great deal of credit for making he and Hillary look palatable in 1991.... for example, he was behind the 60 mintutes, Hillary with headband talking about baking cookies sham.. he was in charge at CNN when Bill needed coverage for all his failures and we didn't have a FOX news to tell it like it is... Front Page Magazine had an interesting resume on this guy back when he got the MSNBC job after being fired at CNN.

Rick gave us the Maury and Connie weekend show...

That is the worst thing I have ever experienced. I watched fully 5 minutes of it before I had it pegged as a complete disaster. I didn't know you could be that bad.

Hell they should give me the job I could turn around that network in a year. Just make it a meritocracy and fire anyone not carrying profitable ratings. OK so we start with a completely clean slate but I'm sure in the worst case we could temporarily hire some out of work circus clowns to hold the fort down. We could pay them much less and I'm sure their ratings would be significantly higher.

You made it through five minutes? How can anyone take anthing Moury says seriously with that horrible TV show of his? I tried to watch and there is no chemisty between he and Connie.. hard to believe they are married.... but then, she had no personality on CNN, either.

Pinging with update. TVNewser says Kaplan "Fired."

Rick Kaplan Fired: What's Next?

> Update: 5:40pm: "There was no blow-up event," an insider tells TVNewser. "This has been months in the making. In some respects it's been a surprise he's lasted this long."

Glaringly absent from today's announcement about Rick Kaplan's departure is any mention of what's next for the MSNBC president. He's packing up and leaving today -- but where is he going?

Kaplan met with NBC News president Steve Capus at 30 Rock this morning, a source tells TVNewser. He was apparently told that MSNBC is moving in a new direction.

The tip box has been buzzing about Rick Kaplan lately. On Tuesday, FTVLive said "word is that Kaplan is quietly pitching himself for the GMA gig." But other insiders say he's not on the short list for that...

ABC seems to be the safe house for Clintonites.
There is former dirty trickster George S , Linda Douglas whose husband was the Clinton 's attorney and Wes Hubble's , and Charlie Gibson whose daugther was a Clinton aide !
So, BJ and Hillary are scrambling to find one of " OUR PEOPLE" a big media spot immediately.
