Four Mexicans accused of sneaking across the border pleaded guilty Tuesday under a new state law targeting immigrant smugglers.
They were among the first 48 alleged customers of smugglers to be charged as conspirators to the crime.
The four, who pleaded guilty to solicitation to commit immigrant smuggling, were sentenced to two years supervised probation and expected to face deportation proceedings.
Critics say the law was intended to be used against smugglers, not their customers.
Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas has said the customers of smugglers need to be held accountable.
In all, 19 of the 48 have pleaded guilty to solicitation to commit immigrant smuggling.
Nearly 200 people, most of whom are customers of smugglers, have been charged in Maricopa County under the law.

How does this work? they get two years supposedly supervised probation, and deportation hearings.. why not skip the tax payers probation and just deport them, they will skip out on their probabtion, and be back in business..
I think the whole point of this exercise is.....they are no longer just "immigrants looking for a better life" but actually have a criminal record now and are on probation. That means if they get caught in the U.S. again they can actually do something about it.

What, they're still going to be here two years from now and then skip out on their bus trip home? Yo, Joe, have a talk with the local judge and tell him/her it's either a one way bus ticket or two years wearing pink undies and eating baloney sandwiches.
