A Republican won a special congressional election in Southern California yesterday so why does the Times make it sound as if the Republicans got beat?
Chief political reporter Adam Nagourneys online filing Wednesday morning on last night's electoral victory by Republican Brian Bilbray begins:
A Republican former congressman slipped to victory in a special election here Tuesday, staving off what would have been a highly embarrassing Democratic victory in a solidly Republican district. National Republicans poured in nearly $5 million and dozens of campaign workers to help hold the seat for their party.

Hasn't 45%(which is what Busby got) always been the typical for liberals in the 50th district?

NYT: Ever spinning hope for the Democrats -- instead of actual news. Soon, their stock will be worth less than toilet paper.

That's about what Kerry got. He's as liberal as it comes.
Adam forgets 55% did not vote Democrat!

He was running against two others and she had no competition. But the dummies at the NYT can't add much less write.

So defeat for Democrats is really a victory?
I suppose red is blue, and water is dry, when some guy on the highway gives me the finger he's really concerned for my well being.
I'm wondering, are these people restrained in some way, or are they permitted to roam freely?

From Reuters:
"Busby has raised over $2.5 million, while Bilbray's campaign took in about $1 million. Republican and Democratic national campaign committees have inundated the San Diego County airwaves, spending more than $4 million, according to disclosure records."
I sense there's Democrat advisor coverup or exageration. This site says as of May 17 busby raised 2.2 million, Bilbray 1.1

Not quite. Candidates aren't generic. This is why parties lose seats primarily when their incumbent officeholders retire. Randy Cunningham was a big time war hero. Bilbray is probably a nice guy. But he's no Randy Cunningham. And Randy Cunningham pled guilty to (as opposed to being merely indicted for) fraud, which specifically tarnishes the image of Republicans in his former district. Busby's defeat is a major blow to the Democrats - between Bilbray not being Cunningham* (in his salad days) and the corruption scandal, she should have won in a landslide.
* Cunningham's wartime exploits are legendary - as opposed to being Kerryesque - he was the first of only two aces during the Vietnam War.

Jim Miller pointed out another important factor - Bilbray is a carpetbagger, having moved in from another district just to run for the seat, whereas Busby is native to the area.

For all you out of towners, President Bush, Sen Frisk, Majority Leader Hasker and all republicans running this fall. The issue is no amnesty.
Let's review what happened here, First Bilbray and affiliated groups spent $5mm and Busby etal spent $6mm. You couldn't turn on tv without one of their ads. Busby even ran an ad telling people to vote for the minuteman candidate. He got 4.5%.
Bilbray has run on one issue here, no amnesty. He wants to secure the borders, enforce the laws, no amnesty. He never came off that position.
The demo's tried to paint him as being joined at the hip in the cult of corruption with Cunningham.
That is a losing strategy. Hope they use it again this fall. It all came together last Thursday night. Busby had a meeting with hispanic leaders in Escondido, north of SD. She did not think the MSM would be there, they weren't. Fortunately, some minutemen were there and recorded the meeting. When asked how the hispanics could help her, she replied,"you don't need papers to vote." There she was telling them is a backhanded way that they could vote, illegal or not.
Friday the tape was released to Roger Hedgecock and he played it. The stampede was on.
As this is going on McCain was suppose to appear at a fund raiser with Bilbray. McCain wanted Bilbray to support his open border program with Kennedy. Bilbray said, no thank you. Everyone here appreciated that someone told McCain that he was not the center of the universe and to blow out of town.
By Monday Busby was sinking. Oh, by the way, last week Hedgecock predicted her winning. She tried to clarify her statement on the radio again. Repeated it again. "You don't need papers to vote." Sometimes, we speak what we really mean not what the handlers have pumped into us.
By Monday afternoon, a lawyer from the DNC had written all the media outlets here on Busby's behalf threatening to sue if anyone ran the tape again. Hedgecock put it in loop mode. Too funny.
Then last Monday she appeared on Hedgecock's show, first time during the campaign. Roger read the DNC letter, asked her if she knew the author and whether he was speaking for her. She honestly said she did not know him, no one informed her that this letter was out there.
The rest is history.
Moral of the story, republicans run against amnesty, secure the borders, enforce our laws. Americans will love you and elect you. McCain is dead, Bush is back-stoking, the demos will lose if pressed on this issue. Sell security for America and its way of life. Thank you Brian Bilbray for sticking to your guns and pointing the way.

If Busby had won by 1%, she would be on every news tv show smiling and that's all they would be talking about.
Instead, the GOP wins by 5% (and another conservative candidate gets 5&) and it's not worth talking about.

I wonder when the Times will get around to intentionally misreporting the results of an election, saying that the Democrat won when in fact the Republican won, then sticking with that story. NYT political reporting is already so shoddy and agenda-driven that it wouldn't be much of a leap.

FYI special elections are usually closer than regular/general elections because there is almost always no incumbent running.
To compare Busby's 20% loss last time she ran to her 4% loss this time and declare it a meaningful gain ignores the above reality.
What was seen last night is there is NO rising tide, there is NO devastation unfolding because of Bush's polling and there is NO evidence anywhere but in the media's imagination that some political earthquake is unfolding.
And for those who say the GOP can't send $5 million to every district, well, they know very well the GOP doesn't need to. It need only send to the few vulnerable districts -- and we ain't gonna run out of money to do that.
Hell, even the guys so angry about immigration and who don't want to send anything to the GOP can still wreak havoc on the Democrat liberals in vulnerable districts by funding those individual GOP candidates whose positions they like. Send direct to the campaign, not the GOP.
Problem solved.
The party out of power usually loses a few seats in an off year election. Bad news for the Dems. A few seats won't shift the majority.
