Coulter's satire--especially when presented in real time--invariably devolves into rant--it becomes personal--and that diminishes her argument.

Mien and technique are problems, too.

The net result is that Ann Coulter is preaching to the choir. Worse, she is recruiting for the enemy; she is turning off, at a minimum, the more milquetoasty subset of the undecideds.

Nonetheless, the only outcomes that that will matter in the end are these:

1. Ann Coulter exposed--and this dustup confirmed-- The New McCarthyism of the Left
   
   

2. Ann Coulter exposed to the world a harsh truth about hillary clinton:
   • hillary clinton was complicit in the rape of Juanita Broaddrick.

   • hillary clinton abused inconvenient women chronically, reflexively, for 30 years.

   • hillary clinton is no less misogynist, power^*-hungry and psychopathic than the husband.

Add to these the problems unique to missus clinton. The reviews make the mistake of focusing on the problems of the generic female presidential candidate running during ordinary times.

These are not ordinary times. America is waging the global War on Terror; the uncharted territory of asymmetric netherworlds is the battlefield; the enemy is brutal, subhuman; the threat of global conflagration is real.

Defeating the enemy isn't sufficient. For America to prevail, she must also defeat a retrograde, misogynous mindset. To successfully prosecute the War on Terror, it is essential that the collective patriarchal islamic culture perceives America as politically and militarily strong. Condi Rice excepted, this requirement presents an insurmountable hurdle for any female presidential candidate, and especially missus clinton, historically antimilitary--(an image, incidentally, that is only enhanced today by her clumsy, termagant parody of Thatcher), forever the pitiful victim, and, according to Dick Morris, "the biggest dove in the clinton administration."

It is ironic that had the clintons not failed utterly to fight terrorism... not failed to take bin Laden from Sudan... not failed repeatedly to decapitate a nascent, still stoppable al Qaeda... the generic female president as a construct would still be viable... missus clinton's obstacles would be limited largely to standard-issue clintonisms: corruption, abuse, malpractice, malfeasance, megalomania, rape and treason... and, in spite of Juanita Broaddrick, or perhaps because of her, Rod Lurie would be reduced to perversely hawking the "First Gentleman" instead of the "Commander-in-Chief."

Dear Concerned Americans,

Hillary Clinton's revisionist tome notwithstanding, 'living history' begets a certain symmetry. It is in that light that I make this not-so-modest proposal on this day, exactly 64 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The context of our concern today--regardless of political affiliation--is Iraq and The War on Terror, but the larger fear is that our democracy may not survive.

We have the requisite machines, power and know-how to defeat the enemy in Iraq and elsewhere, but do we have the will?

In particular, do we have the will to identify and defeat the enemy in our midst?

Answerable to no one, heir apparent in her own mind, self-serving in the extreme, Hillary Clinton incarnates this insidious new threat to our survival.

Let's clear this up once and for all. The so-called "Jersey Girls" do not occupy some unassailable moral fortress because they were widowed by the events of 9/11. Nor does Cindy Sheehan enjoy critical immunity because she lost a son in Iraq.

The victims of 9/11 were the husbands of the Jersey Girls, not the women themselves. Those men died not because Osama bin Laden singled them out for execution, but on pure random chance. The offense committed on 9/11 wasn't MORE against the widows than anyone else; it was against America ... every ONE of us! That their husbands happened to be working in offices in the Trade Center that day does not endow them with any insulation from criticism.

They gave up the right to respectful silence when they voluntarily used their grief as a platform from which to criticize the administration. They are no longer private, mourning widows, but willing pawns in a partisan battle. As such, they open themselves up to the same level of criticism they bring on their opponents.

It is disingenuous and childish to hurl brickbats, then scamper off whining when one comes back at you.

Everything above is doubly true for Cindy Sheehan, whose son was a voluntary member of the Armed Services, and gave his life in a cause he believed in, even if his mother didn't.

What's "unseemly" here is the exploitation of these dupes by a conscienceless Left, and the implication that the mean-spirited Right is somehow at fault for responding in kind.

I AGREE with her as to substance.
I am merely trying to offer some constructive criticism about her execution.

As for my own posts and 'red meat,' I try to remain dispassionate, although, as I have stated elsewhere, I, too, often fail. It is hard to be dispassionate about the seditious Left, generally, and the clintons, in particular. But that doesn't mean we mustn't try.

As for 'preaching to the choir,' the theory behind my "hillary talks" format is precisely the opposite: to reach the others by letting them hear the clintons impeach themselves.

I deplore political correctness. I deplore the new McCarthyism of the Left. I deplore the clintons' rape of Broaddrick. And I applaud Coulter for taking this on.

Very well stated. I agree with everything you say. Just to clarify, I don't think Ann Coulter's comments about the widows were 'unseemly.' (The Left makes them appear so by taking them out of context.)

My general point is this: For Ann to be most effective, she must increase her audience beyond her conservative base and she must be credible. Her special brand of trenchant, analytic commentary minus the personal rant will go far to help her achieve both.

In 1960 the left had a complete stranglehold on media and government. So overconfident were they, that they allowed the one nationally recognized conservative, Bill Buckley, to participate in the NYC mayoral debates. At one point, Buckley was challenged with a typical set up question, "When were conservatives going to join the modern era and support an end to African coloniism?". "When the Africans stop eating each other, " was Buckley's retort. Forty years later, we witnessed Idi Amin, the slaughter in Rwanda, and a host of other consequences to the lefts anti colonial, anti rational, pro socialist, policies/dogmas of the 1960s,

As with Coulter, the still youthful Buckley's remark was at the time easily demeaned as racist insensitive, etc.

One thing, at least, seems likely. At long last, the four widows will not have an entirely free pass in future expeditions into public policy advocacy, Everytime they appear from now on there will likely be some, probably negative, reference to Coulters description of them. The ring of truth will be heard despite the ongoing media smear.

Intentionally or not, Coulter "rope-a-doped" the MSN. With her "outrageous" presentation of her argumement the MSN, like Clinton, fell for the bait and took what looked like an easy swipe at conservatives. Coulter's comebacks put her arguments before the American public and end ran the MSN media gatekeepers. Now of course all attacks on Coulter are by proxy and she is not given response time.

But whats new about that?

As for Rwanda's validation of Buckley's insight, we must not overlook the additional, even more pernicious dynamic in Rwanda.

As they did with terrorism, the clintons ignored the mass genocide in Rwanda because they calculated that ignoring the genocide was best for the clintons.

Over the past decade, scholars and advocates have rightly reflected on the reasons that the international community and nations in Africa must share the responsibility for this tragedy. As I said during my trip to Rwanda in 1998, "We did not act quickly enough after the killing began. We should not have allowed the refugee camps to become safe haven for the killers. We did not immediately call these crimes by their rightful name: genocide." ¹

n the course of a hundred days in 1994 the Hutu government of Rwanda and its extremist allies very nearly succeeded in exterminating the country's Tutsi minority. Using firearms, machetes, and a variety of garden implements, Hutu militiamen, soldiers, and ordinary citizens murdered some 800,000 Tutsi and politically moderate Hutu. It was the fastest, most efficient killing spree of the twentieth century.

A few years later, in a series in The New Yorker, Philip Gourevitch recounted in horrific detail the story of the genocide and the world's failure to stop it. President Bill Clinton, a famously avid reader, expressed shock. He sent copies of Gourevitch's articles to his second-term national-security adviser, Sandy Berger. The articles bore confused, angry, searching queries in the margins. "Is what he's saying true?" Clinton wrote with a thick black felt-tip pen beside heavily underlined paragraphs. "How did this happen?" he asked, adding, "I want to get to the bottom of this." The President's urgency and outrage were oddly timed. As the terror in Rwanda had unfolded, Clinton had shown virtually no interest in stopping the genocide, and his Administration had stood by as the death toll rose into the hundreds of thousands.....

 

In March of 1998, on a visit to Rwanda, President Clinton issued what would later be known as the "Clinton apology," which was actually a carefully hedged acknowledgment. He spoke to the crowd assembled on the tarmac at Kigali Airport: "We come here today partly in recognition of the fact that we in the United States and the world community did not do as much as we could have and should have done to try to limit what occurred" in Rwanda.

This implied that the United States had done a good deal but not quite enough. In reality the United States did much more than fail to send troops. It led a successful effort to remove most of the UN peacekeepers who were already in Rwanda. It aggressively worked to block the subsequent authorization of UN reinforcements. It refused to use its technology to jam radio broadcasts that were a crucial instrument in the coordination and perpetuation of the genocide. And even as, on average, 8,000 Rwandans were being butchered each day, U.S. officials shunned the term "genocide," for fear of being obliged to act. The United States in fact did virtually nothing "to try to limit what occurred." Indeed, staying out of Rwanda was an explicit U.S. policy objective.

With the grace of one grown practiced at public remorse, the President gripped the lectern with both hands and looked across the dais at the Rwandan officials and survivors who surrounded him. Making eye contact and shaking his head, he explained, "It may seem strange to you here, especially the many of you who lost members of your family, but all over the world there were people like me sitting in offices, day after day after day, who did not fully appreciate [pause] the depth [pause] and the speed [pause] with which you were being engulfed by this unimaginable terror."

Clinton chose his words with characteristic care. It was true that although top U.S. officials could not help knowing the basic facts&#8212;thousands of Rwandans were dying every day&#8212;that were being reported in the morning papers, many did not "fully appreciate" the meaning. In the first three weeks of the genocide the most influential American policymakers portrayed (and, they insist, perceived) the deaths not as atrocities or the components and symptoms of genocide but as wartime "casualties"&#8212;the deaths of combatants or those caught between them in a civil war.

Yet this formulation avoids the critical issue of whether Clinton and his close advisers might reasonably have been expected to "fully appreciate" the true dimensions and nature of the massacres. During the first three days of the killings U.S. diplomats in Rwanda reported back to Washington that well-armed extremists were intent on eliminating the Tutsi. And the American press spoke of the door-to-door hunting of unarmed civilians. By the end of the second week informed nongovernmental groups had already begun to call on the Administration to use the term "genocide," causing diplomats and lawyers at the State Department to begin debating the word's applicability soon thereafter. In order not to appreciate that genocide or something close to it was under way, U.S. officials had to ignore public reports and internal intelligence and debate.

 

...whatever their convictions about "never again," many of them did sit around, and they most certainly did allow genocide to happen. In examining how and why the United States failed Rwanda, we see that without strong leadership the system will incline toward risk-averse policy choices.

"When you look at those children who greeted us," he said, biting his lip, as is his wont, "how could anyone say they did not want those children to have a chance to have their own children?"

Alas, the President had precisely identified the problem. In April 1994, when the Hutu genocidaires looked at the children who greeted them in the Tutsi villages, that's exactly what they thought: they didn't want those Tutsi children to have a chance to have their own children. So the question is: when a bunch of killers refuse to subscribe to multiculti mumbo-jumbo, what do you do?

Au contraire, he appreciated it all too fully. That's why, during the bloodbath,

Clinton Administration officials were specifically instructed not to use the word "genocide" lest it provoke public pressure to do something.

Documents made public last week confirm that US officials knew within the first few days that a "final solution" to eliminate all Tutsis was underway.
